Re: LL69: for the LLama Drama

I kicked myself for missing lemniscate. I kicked myself even more for failing to remember Forrest Gump. (Even though there's a Bubba Gump's about 500 feet from where I'm sitting right now.) And I kicked myself yet more for assigning three points to Forrest Gump. And I was up against a ToCer who lite...

Re: LL69: for the LLama Drama

Yeah, I'm moving to NYC for the sole purpose of LL. I work in midtown Manhattan. My train runs directly under the Lever House every day! And yet I'd never heard of it and honestly I'd never have thought that a glass skyscraper would be something of note. But I guess somebody had to build the first ...

Re: LL68 Mini-Leagues and One-Days

I think I underestimated how much of a Group of Death I'm in. My opponents in Classical Music 2 so far have classical QPcts of .773, .606, .704 and .899. No wonder I'm 0-3-1. And today it's .939. I'm done for with my .545 classical QPct.

Re: LL68 Mini-Leagues and One-Days

I just checked who my opponent is for Classical 2 today... to discover their best category is, guess what, classical music. Not very likely I'm winning regardless of what the questions might be. Miraculously, I tied 2(1)-2(2). The only answer I knew was Symphonie fantastique. That was a little emba...

Re: LL68 Mini-Leagues and One-Days

I just played my first day in Classical Music. It's my first MiniLeague, and I really hope I don't forfeit because of not being in the routine that comes with playing every weekday. I'm subscribed to reminders, which will work if (1) they apply in MiniLeagues and (2) I check my email late enough. R...

Re: LL68 Mini-Leagues and One-Days

I was surprised by how few people got Tombaugh. New Horizons was such a big deal, and who better to go to Pluto than the guy who discovered it?

Re: LL68 Mini-Leagues and One-Days

Lost 3(3)-6(3). What floored me was the 96% get rate on the Hawking wedding picture. I remembered seeing it within the last couple of days in one of those 'You won't BELIEVE who this is' ads at the bottom of a webpage, and guessed it was probably Hawking just because I'd seen the same eyeglasses in ...

Re: LL68 Mini-Leagues and One-Days

All the previews of Humanities 4 as well as the previous Humanites MLs convinced me I didn't stand a chance, but now I'm really feeling like I should have signed up. If anything, it's because those questions from MD1 were incredibly entertaining. Remind me never to miss anything that Hicks smiths e...

Re: LL68: For the LLamas

Wait, how about Martha Stewart? Would she have been in the slammer then? Let's give it a shot... And thus I get a less-than-fully-warranted 3 points. You were closer on the slammer part than you think. The show was taped during her house arrest, and they used various stratagems to cover it up. TA:M...

Re: LL68: For the LLamas

I went from mid-pack in Horizon B to 4th (!) place in Magnolia A. And you'll get to face off across the kitchen table in A Mag next season (congrats to cmp146!). Sadly I won't be joining you there, as a disastrous* MD25 dropped me out of the promotion zone and landed me in fifth. But fifth in B is ...

Re: LL68: For the LLamas

Congratulations to PatKav who has a lock to win Magnolia B and promotion. Oh, and ThreeIfByAir has overtaken me by one point and sits in 3rd in the race to promotion to Magnolia A. It will be an interesting couple of matches to end the season! Yes, many congratulations to PatKav. And if my calculat...

Re: LL68: For the LLamas

9% on the theater company. I guess that was every bit as obscure as I thought. A non-food company just didn't occur to me on Ikea. And Croatia?!? In retrospect, the timing makes sense, but I wasn't getting that one in a million years. It helps to know that the checkerboard pattern also appears on t...

Re: LL68: For the LLamas

I had a lot of trouble deciding how to defend yesterday, especially the Q-Bert question (which made me smile just to read it). It was one of my favorite games at that time but I didn't know whether people under a certain age would be familiar with it. Oh yes. Despite the infamy of Wreck-It Ralph in...

Re: LL68: For the LLamas

ThreeIfByAir demoralized me on Friday, in part because I am so traumatized by Donald Trump that I've blocked all knowledge of The Apprentice. ;) Well played, sir. Sorry! But I was pretty excited to get my first 9(6) of the season. I just happened to get a wheelhouse set of questions that I managed ...

Re: LL68: For the LLamas

FLORINS! Just like the Princess Bride countries Guilder and Florin! My guess this morning was Guilder, so I had to laugh at the correct answer. Back before the Netherlands adopted the euro, the guilder was the currency, and the term was used semi-interchangeably with florin, to the extent that 'fl....

Re: LL68: For the LLamas

My brain warred furiously with itself. "It's tidying!" "It can't be, that's not logical, tidying doesn't change your life and doesn't need a scheme, it has to be decluttering." "I tell you, it's tidying. I remember reading about it." "Not. Logical. La, la, la, not listening to you." <hits submit> "D...

Re: LL68: For the LLamas

Pulled up the e-mail this morning thinking 'yeah, that was a defeat, no way I can win in B with two right'. Shocked to discover that I had a 2(2)-0(1) victory, putting me one place outside the promotion zone and tied for 23 points. I totally don't deserve that. I have ten fewer TCA than most people ...

Re: LL68: For the LLamas

Wow, that was a tough day. When the easiest question has a 39% get rate, you're going to see some low scores. Of course I had the unfair advantage of (a) being British and having eaten many Chelsea buns, and (b) having heard my brother talk about his trip to Western Sahara and meeting many Sahrawis....
