Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I definitely did not pick up on the "sooner" hint in the clue. That was a clever bit of writing by the Commish. And I have probably heard at some point what radar stands for, but that was never going to come to me. I was shocked at how low the get rate on museum was when spotted "nine" in the clue. ...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I have an econ degree and don't remember ever hearing the name David Ricardo. The 6% on grisaille I can believe, but I'm skeptical of 14% knowing Ricardo (especially with almost double that on the MCWA (among them, mine)). But my opponent thought I would, so I did manage to take down my rundle's le...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I managed to win with only 2 correct and move up to third place (in the promotion zone) of my rundle, but yeah, yesterday was a fall back down to earth. I knew Porter cold (though I sometimes confuse her with Edna Ferber and had to read the clue carefully to make sure I had the right one) and Liverp...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I am usually good at the quiz bowl centric clues but I had never heard of Marat/Sade, though Peter Weiss does ring a faint bell. I had no good guess, so I went with Hansel. I got the other five. Lonely Planet was an educated guess, as I seem to remember a teacher or professor showing some of the vid...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I recognized Kachenjunga as what I thought was the third highest mountain in the world. I didn't recognize that name for K2 so I thought that maybe I had been wrong and the former was the 4th highest, so I went with K2. I couldn't have told you an alternate name for Everest, but I knew that K2 was a...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

The 400 Blows was the only Truffaut film I knew but I didn't think that it was right. I ended up giving my opponent a 3 for that one instead of Jacobs (which I had no idea on and was expecting a get rate that was about what it turned out to be), so I thought for sure that I had doomed myself. It tur...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I lost 0(1)-1(1). We are now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

I doubt that it would have counted, but I didn't catch that my phone autocorrected to one-person character from non-person character. On the oft chance that it would have counted I still would have only tied.

Re: Monday, June 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I read The Ringer and 538 every day, and both have already spoiled James's loss. I don't particularly care and was spoiled last night from reading this board, but really, those articles could have waited until tomorrow or even later in the week. Anyway, big congrats to James on the run! I can unders...

Re: Breach of Confidentiality re James Holzhauer's Remaining Games in Season 35?

NY Post is now teasing that he loses tomorrow There are screenshots that aren't too hard to find on Twitter that appear to confirm this. you really think it's happening??? With all the information that was out there before he began, the one piece of information we haven't heard is that he loses. I ...

You guys think compost is a condiment? You are NOT invited to the potluck.
Hey man given the wording of the question I thought there once could have been a condiment called compost! I feel dumb about it now but I just couldn't pull the trigger on hummus being considered a condiment.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I lost out on the 50 50 90 guess between humus and compost. I knew that there was a term related to soil called humus, but I didn't think that the food item was a condiment. It meant the difference between a loss and a win for me. I lead my rundle in TCA, MPD, and TMP, and I am also towards the top ...

Re: Trivia Nationals

The J! audition does make it tempting, as I have not had one since 2008. But as tempting as it is I think that I am going to holdout. I went in 2014 and 2015, but the second time really felt unnecessary (though I say this as a D rundler who will never win anything). I would like to go again in the f...

I had to chuckle when panettone was a question yesterday. I first learned that word when it came up in the national spelling bee many years ago.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I won 9(5)-2(3) yesterday, and was so close to a 9(6). I tried to think of names of news anchors and for some reason the name Muir came to me, but I thought that it was 2 syllables. It always amazes me when my opponent gives me a 0 in a weak category for me on questions that they miss. It took me aw...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I won 8(5)-3(3) yesterday and nearly drank a second straight beer. Yahtzee came to me as a possibility but I ultimately went with Connect 4. That was especially dumb considering that it makes no sense for that game to have a "namesake section." I got lucky with poutine. I didn't think that it was ri...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I got only the third 9(6) of my career yesterday. My suspicions that it was an easy set were mostly confirmed, though I was really surprised by the low get rate on Great Red Spot, especially given that the MCWA only had a 7% response rate. (EDIT: I guess other valid answers being rejected may have s...

Re: Friday, May 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The year in the FJ clue actually led me to Nintendo. It didn't make sense, but I had nothing better.
