Re: Monday, April 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I knew that Thetis was the mother of Achilles, and I am not sure that I would have got this clue otherwise. I am thinking that I knew that Achilles was notable for being a youngest sibling, but I don't know if that would have helped me.

I only knew this FJ because I remember a similar question coming up on WWTBAM a long time ago.

Re: Friday, April 6, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Why couldn't I have been up there to play this board? After the hard one last night this one was right up my alley. I am sad though that the pop music category had unrevealed clues.

I got FJ, but was not completely confident on it.

Re: Thursday, April 5, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

This was a nightmare board for me. Luckily the DJ round was finished and we weren't left with 2 unrevealed geography clues.

The Silicon Valley DD should have simply been a regular top of the board clue.

I said Mission: Impossible for FJ.

Re: Wednesday, April 4, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I couldn't believe all the Lach trash in the J! round Literature category, but this was still a great game. I also picked up saltcellar (which seemed undervalued) and de Kooning. The DJ round TV category got me back for the Lit, because those were all sit and stares for me. I loved the medicinal mar...

Re: Monday, April 2, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I liked this board but it struck me as a little on the easy side, particularly the three DDs. There were some tough bottom of the board clues though, with Siegfried, Gallagher, and Culloden. 1746 + battle used to be a Pavlov to me for Culloden, but I had apparently forgotten; I guessed Bannockburn. ...

Re: Wednesday, March 28, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I had no idea that it was a musical, but the year and songs did the trick. I just had to hope that the musical had the same title as the film.

Re: Monday, March 26, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I thought that the second row and third row clues were by far the hardest in the hiding places in literature category that came up in the J! round. Invisible Man and Jane Eyre in the bottom two rows seemed like classic study list material. And spelling categories are dumb; the geographic spelling ca...

Re: LearnedLeague 76 - Official Thread

Pop music is my fourth worst category, but Bay City Rollers was my only get yesterday. I thought that Saturday Night is a well known song, but it might be the type of song that everyone recognizes but few know the name of the artist. I am kicking myself for not connecting the dots on White Russian a...

Re: Friday, March 23, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

This was a tough board for me. I started the DJ round with a couple of really tough misses, with dramadery for bactrian and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever for lyme disease. But having a clue on Silent Bob made it all worth it. I got FJ after about 5 seconds, but without having the year in the clue I m...

Re: Wednesday, March 21, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I put asterisks on the ones that I think involve errors of adjudication rather than faulty clues. Add in Tom Morris (who was brought back as a co-champion in the wake of Paul Thomas's light-pen debacle after coming in second, and won), and I believe you've got all the players since the clue values ...

Re: Wednesday, March 21, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I wanted to ask: how did Lisa pronounce Ishiguro? Her answer sounded close enough to me as not to violate the show's regular pronunciation rules, but I may have heard wrong.

Re: LearnedLeague 76 - Official Thread

I saw the 60 Minutes interview with Jennifer Lawrence a few weeks ago. I figured that that new movie with her was the answer, but I could not for the life of me remember the title. I guessed Red Dossier and was amazed that I got even that close. My opponent must assign defense based on their percept...

Re: Wednesday, March 21, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

It felt like this board had quite a few vague clues that needed more TOM. I wasn't a fan of the 5-letter words category in particular. I did really like the musicals category, even though I had no idea on the middle and bottom two clues. And Matlock was way overvalued, and would have been even witho...

I guessed Maybelleine for the gyro question, even though it didn't really make sense given the wording of the clues.

Re: LearnedLeague 76 - Official Thread

I won 4(4)-2(3) yesterday, but after I submitted I was fully expecting a 4(4)-5(2) loss. I made a guess on stage manager and didn't think the answer was that simple, and my opponent's worst category was Theater so I gave them a 3 for it. Also, my opponent's best category was Food/Drink, but I had no...

Re: LearnedLeague 76 - Official Thread

It seemed like a pretty easy set for the midseason classic, as I went 8/12. Unfortunately I picked Mamet over Sam Shepard and didn't think through the music question enough to get to Quadrophenia.

Congrats to a certain boardie for finishing tied for 1st!
