Re: Friday, January 22, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I probably heard wrong, but it sounded to me like Jack said "continent" for "consonant."

It was cool to see the clue on Jellyfish Lake in Palau. I remember when a visit to it was featured as a reward on Survivor.

I guessed Lenin on the tiebreaker clue, but I wasn't sure.

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

STATE CAPITALS Both a U.S. state and its capital were named in reference to this same man. Albany, New York. James II of England/VII of Scotland. He was the Duke of York in England and the Duke of Albany in Scotland. This is basically the FJ clue that was used in game 2 of the finals of the 2004 co...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

It was a good season for me, but I finished it with a bad 1(1)-2(3) loss. On the Goya question I locked in on Bimbo and didn't think any more about it. I stock both products at my side job, so I should have thought of Goya. I am also really surprised that Goya played easier than "recycling," which I...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

Also missed the book question by guessing lemon. I've never heard of that book. I cannot believe that one played easier than Risky Business. I only knew the book because I had to read it in my 8th grade English class. I only remember it coming up in quiz bowl or trivia once or twice previously, and...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

For the Waldheim question I knew it was the Austrian guy, but I could not for the life of me remember his name. It was kind of similar to what happened to me on the Cat's Cradle question the previous day, though I feel confident that I would not have pulled Waldheim even if I took all day to think a...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I could not for the life of me remember the name of that Vonnegut novel other than Slaughterhouse-Five and Player Piano that I learned in my quiz bowl studies. I spent about half the day trying to think of it before I gave up. It's a good thing that I am working from home now, given my reaction when...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

Cool stat for me: for the first time in my LL career I have made it to the halfway point of the season without having fewer than 2 correct answers on any MD (this still holds true even if you call MD 12 the halfway point). I doubt that I can keep the streak going until the end of season but I will ...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I lucked into a 3(2)-1(2) win yesterday. I went the right way between Turks and Turk, but I didn't realize that the media company was not called "ReutGers." It didn't make a difference, but that still stings.

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

When I first read yesterday's questions I thought that I might not get any of them. But the light bulb came on with Poe on the reread, and I remembered the Dickens connection to "The Raven." Corvette was my first thought on that question, and I stuck with it for lack of a better guess. Then I someho...

Re: Wednesday, November 25, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Cher was my first thought on FJ, but I made the switch to Bette Midler. I feel like I always guess either Streisand or Cher when a singer/actress clue comes up, and am always wrong.

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I got my second straight tie yesterday. I nearly gave the Rosa Luxemburg question a 3 (I had never heard of her), but thankfully I switched it to a 2 and made House the 3 (pop music was my opponent's worst category, but I didn't have that question pegged as being that difficult). Cool stat for me: f...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I had no idea on the comedian question, but I went with Dave Chappelle as a guess that seem as reasonable as any. It was the difference between a win and a loss!

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I misinterpreted the bowling question as saying that the bowler knocked down 1 pin in each of frames 4-7, instead of on their next 4 rolls (in frames 4 and 5), and submitted 65 as my answer. My opponent gave me a 3, and it was the difference between a win and a loss

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I went the wrong way between choral and pastoral, and it cost me a beer. Luckily I played perfect defense and still got the win.

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I got a tie because they gave me two points for Keebler. That was my zero defense and they missed it. I was not expecting that one to play as easy as it did, though I definitely remember seeing the commercials of the elves making the cookies in a tree back when I was a kid. But I was never going to...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

It has been a rough start to the season for me. I'm 1-2-0, with my one win being a forfeit win on MD 1. I also only have 7 TCA. I guess that it makes me feel better though that I was nowhere close to coming up with the correct answer to any question that I have missed so far.

Re: Wednesday, November 4, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I only got Spain and France. At first I thought that it was evil to ask for all three, but once I hit on Spain and then France I figured that the trick was to think of the larger countries. It might have still been better to ask for 2 of the 3 though, given that the contestants have limited time to ...

Re: Tuesday, November 3, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The mention of 2011 first took me to Sudan and South Sudan. I made the switch to the correct country, but I have to admit that I had no idea that Libya changed its flag. I would have thought that it is still solid green!
