Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I finished the season with an embarrassing 2(1)-7(5) loss, with my only get being "gi." I thought that the countries question had something to do with soccer and originally guessed France, then made the switch to China. It cost me a 75 TCA season. I was pretty close to average this season, finishing...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I lost out on the coin flip between Lumumba and Kabila, though that's on me since I should have known that Kabila is still alive. I also could not pull Piltdown and knew that it would be something that I've definitely heard of. I did get the other 4 and got the win. Bonheur I knew from my quiz bowl ...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

When I first read yesterday's set I thought that I was going to end up with a 0(0), but Ockham clicked on the reread and my educated guesses of Christie and FIFA panned out. I ended up with a tie.

I guessed Turkmenistan for the former Soviet republic. I also guessed Charles Manson for Ozzy Osbourne.

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I was so close to a Buckner win yesterday, as I won 7(3)-1(1). How is that close to a Buckner win? Wouldn't it have been a Buckner win if I gave my opponent a 0 for the one that they got correct (Champagne, which I did consider for the 0)? No. A Buckner win is scoring more points on two-fewer corre...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I was so close to a Buckner win yesterday, as I won 7(3)-1(1). I am not sure why my opponent would give me a 2 for Hurston, but I'll take it!

My opponent also gave me a 0 for Champagne. I embarrassingly lost the coin flip on that one and guessed Burgundy.

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I had an embarrassing 0(1)-7(5) loss yesterday. I had no idea on any of them except for the Tom Sawyer question. This season has felt kind of strange in that I feel like it has played hard, but I am somehow batting .510 in TCA, and I only finished one previous season above .500. I also have the seco...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I expected a much higher get rate on Q1 yesterday (anchor). I can see putting "pundit," which was the MCWA at 14%, but that plus anchor at 42% gives 56%. I wonder what the other 44% came up with? This one seemed like a WECIB? type question to me. I debated between pundit and correspondent, and went...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

The number of questions in the championship that I got right while playing from the sidelines by round: 5, 3, 2, 5. Weird that round 4 played easier for me than rounds 2 and 3.

Congrats to MeyerT on winning yet another scarf!

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I once wrote a question on Gentleman Jim...and still could not pull it. I also feel kind of dumb for never having heard of the Delmarva Peninsula, though I have only ever made two (very brief) trips to the Mid-Atlantic region. That one didn't play super easy, so I guess that makes me feel a bit bett...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I figured Ali wasn't gettable without knowledge of the airport, but there was plenty of help if you read.every.word. If it mentions Louisville, KY, it's almost certainly Ali. I seem to remember that there was a question a few years back where the answer was Louisville and there was a Muhammad Ali c...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

Both my opponent and I messed up on defense yesterday, as I got a 9(5)-4(3) win. Count me as another one who fell into the gluteus maximus trap on the quadriceps question. That one was a forehead slapper! I had no idea on the caterpillar question and was about to submit with "mole" as my answer, but...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

Yesterday was a disaster. I couldn't remember which one was which between gorillas and chimps and went the wrong way, picked Memphis over Nashville, and somehow allowed my brain to type library instead of lighthouse. At least I still would have lost even if I got all three. Jamie Lee Curtis being a ...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I thought for sure that I lost on yesterday's set, but I got lucky with a 4(4)-3(3) win. I knew Manhattan clam chowder from stocking the soup aisle at Publix, and I should have known Heart from working there since "These Dreams" is part of the awful background music that I hear every day while worki...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

Three MDs into the season and I've already lost out on 2 coin flips, first by picking dactylic over iambic and then by changing my guess on the wine from port to Madeira. The former didn't affect the outcome of my match, but the latter ended up being the difference between a win and a loss. And I'm ...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I work in telecom and had never heard of O2, though my company only works with American carriers.

I struggled with how to assign defense yesterday, but got a 7(5)-4(3) win.

Happy birthday! And a continued thanks to everyone who keeps this place running.

It's hard to believe that the amount of time that this board has existed is greater than the amount of time that I was on the old Sony board. Time flies.
