Re: Wednesday, January 13, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Shouldn't the answer to the Mary Tyler Moore clue be "Mary Richards", the character in the show, not the actor? The gave character names, so yeah, it should be. Agreed. If they wanted Peter, Paul and Mary Tyler Moore, the clue should have been FOLK TRIO BEHIND "PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON&...

Re: Monday, January 11, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The Columbus affiliate pre-empted the show for an Ohio State football special, so I had to wait until the middle of the night to watch it. I thought Ken did a pretty good job. J! posted a video in which Ken said the best advice he got was from his wife. To paraphrase, don't compare yourself to Alex,...

Re: Jeopardy! Interim Host Thread

Now, Ken skipping practice? That's absolutely fine. I can't imagine getting bored of playing J!, but maybe by the 15th dress rehearsal, it gets old. Plus, if they keep using the same small set of clues that rotate every 3 or 4 taping days, it could be kinda pointless. Doing 10 shows a week is a gri...

Re: Fun with ABC's "The Chase" [Spoilers]

... The fact that Ferguson is British is coincidental. He was likeable in his late night show and he was likeable (award-winning, even) in his previous game show. That should be ABC's new show. Have people come up to Ferguson and tell him to his face, "You're British." Whichever contestan...

Re: Fun with ABC's "The Chase" [Spoilers]

I'm glad Kristin got a good haul, but I really didn't like this version. I didn't like the host at all, the kibbitzing from backstage was ridiculous, Ken (God bless 'em) just ain't The Beast for trash talk (The Professor? Say huh?!? And if that's his nickname, I can only imagine what they can come ...

Re: Jeopardy! Interim Host Thread

Is it Confirmed 1/11 will be Couric Starting? KJ on 1/11 and a few posts above has him down for already doing 30 shows. Katie is said to do five shows with an unknown airing. Regular shows have to air in order unless J! does a major rule shift and has (jumps the shark) three new contestants each da...

Re: Friday, January 8, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I don't remember the exact vocabulary, but I know there are generally two kinds of ads for syndicated shows - ads that are placed by your local station, and ads that are placed by the syndicator. For sitcoms, I think they add in the latter type of commercials, which causes some shows to eliminate a...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

I parsed it while reading the clue (I missed the show and first saw the clue in this thread). Actually, the category gets you started. Famous Americans. Air Corps Reserve = Aviator April 1941 = Pre-WWII I instantly thought of Lindbergh as a famous pre-WWII aviator. Briefly considered whether he woul...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Spoken like someone who's never had to move a box of books. They're dense, and efficient space-fillers to boot (I mean, in a way besides density, as they're generally flat and rectangular), and many people have enough to fill a few boxes, so it's really easy to bite off more than you can chew. I HA...

Resurrecting a zombie thread here, I know, but was Paul shafted out of $2400 (total swing) with his "incorrect" response of "What is CAD?" in INVENTIONS $1200? The clue: "The robotic hand seen here was created thanks to the invention of this computer-aided process" At ...

Re: What ought to happen next?

One other thought: There's someone out there who knows that he or she was the last contestant Alex crowned as a champion. And they're coming back to a new host in a week or so. Imagine how weird that must feel. I'm wondering how weird it must be for Zach Newkirk, the last champion before everything...

Re: What ought to happen next?

My hope is they're going for someone really good, but they can't get that person right away because of current commitments. I had a similar thought. They might know who they want, but that person isn't available immediately. Aside from the holiday reruns, they're continuing the show without interru...

What about Brad Rutter? If Ken Jennings is a possibility, then surely Rutter must be one, too. Or is he ruled out for some reason?

Re: What ought to happen next?

I think Jeopardy is a bad show for rotating hosts. A key part of hosting the show is establishing a good cadence so contestants know when to signal and the person who operates the light/lockout mechanism knows when to activate it. With a succession of hosts, you'd have all sorts of rhythms from host...

Yes, Sopwith Camel was an instaget for me thanks to Snoopy. To be fair, the last original Peanuts strip was published over 20 years ago.

Re: TD 453 - Quiz Bowl [Final results]

My lack of Pac-12 knowledge paid off. In looking at the correct answers, a few ring a bell, but I couldn't come up with any of them. I might have said Berkeley if I had remembered that Cal was in the Pac-12. I might have said Stanford if I'd thought about it more; Wikipedia says Stanford, CA, is the...
