Re: LL79: For the LLamas
Just to explain myself because I beat Boson with a 9% get: my mom taught at Dunbar HS in Baltimore (the one most famous for basketball with a long list of alums including Mugsy Bogues and Sam Cassell) so while I didn’t know the titles of the works I could zero in on him as an African-American poet o...

Re: LearnedLeague 76 - Official Thread
Most days I glance at the questions when I wake up and ruminate a bit before answering later in the morning. Once or twice a season, like yesterday, I open them up and don't have to bother ruminating because I know them all immediately. It's a great feeling but also a little sad to be done so quickly.

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread
That was the first regular season TV question I've missed in just over 2 calendar years (and I still didn't get a 0 for it, so lost on horrible defense on my part).

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread
For the baryon question, I suspect that the small numbers meant little to most, so the 3 quarks hint was an important one. If one recalls that the name arose from Murray Gell-Mann's use of the line "Three quarks for Muster Mark" in Finnegan's wake because protons and neutrons are composed of three ...

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread
I hope it was just 12 questions about the Monster Mash's original lyrics. I'm in a meeting and bored and looking around the web and just got a dirty look because I did a poor job of stopping myself from laughing out loud. Nice one. "Scary Love was the subtitle of the 6th version of WHAT SONG by Leo...

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread
Until I started listening to Comedy Bang Bang regularly, I thought ALW was the lyricist. Now I know better, thanks to PFT. I knew Rice off the bat since Webber did some of those and Elton John did some of those, meaning Rice was the one constant. But this comment wins everything. Heynong man. ETA: ...

I stupidly guessed marginal utility for price elasticity last season, so no way was I missing it this time.zerobandwidth wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2017 6:46 am[*]Never heard of marginal utility, guessed brand loyalty instead. Seems like a YEKIOYD giveaway to economists, unless the German word gives a literal translation.

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread
A couple of seasons ago I had a 1.000 DE until MD 8 or 9 (or maybe even later, don't remember). This season, I've lost to a 9(5) and a 9(6). My DE is .000. Instead of the Sandra award, I'm aiming for the Blutarski.

Apparently nobody watched Lost or at least remembers it. I gave it a 0 to two people (including private rundle) with high TV scores and both missed. 17% get rate on one of the most iconic moments of the show.

That Thief of Bagdad thing is very awkward. I missed it in ME then used it as a guess in Movies. I don't think that's cheating by the letter of the law but I feel a little weird about it.

I have been to the Baha'i Temple in Haifa multiple times. My wife studied abroad in Haifa. Which is why it is so infuriating that I looked at it, said "I got this", wrote down "Druze", and didn't even look at it again. One of my worst brain farts ever.

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread
I missed being alive in the 1960s by about half a year, so I can use that as an excuse of my performance on that ML is poor. Ditto, but also I'm having the complaint that people had about the TV ML -- the questions have been fairly short with no real clues to get them if you don't just immediately ...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread
I offered three points on the Voyager question, hoping that my opponent, in addition to not knowing about space, didn't see the 1979 "Star Trek" movie. Count me in the group of people who got Voyager almost specifically because of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It certainly helped me know the...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread
My opponent gave me 3 points for Irrawaddy, which is understandable in light of its get rate, but he seemingly didn't take into account that geography is my 3rd-best category and that I had been 9 for 10 in it this season going into MD23. I'm really surprised that one played so hard. I lost 7(5)-5(...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread
Leadbelly was the perfect example of when my defensive gut fails me, but luckily it didn't cost me. Having grown up on folk music, being given "Good Night, Irene" felt like such a gimme to me that I zeroed it without thinking.
