Re: Fun with GSN's "Master Minds"

In Wednesday's game, Ken made a mistake in one of his "fun facts" comments. He said that the Germans used to refer to B flat as H; in fact, they used to refer to B flat as B and B natural as H. (I'm not sure the degree to which this is still practiced, but Ken definitely got it backwards.) I think ...

Re: Fun with ABC's "The Chase" [Spoilers]

Sara Haines's pronunciation of Anosmia was just awful. :? I thought it was kind of pretty. Wrong, not helpful, but it sounded nice...And it didn't seem to faze the player. (For those who didn't watch, pronounced as if it were Italian or Spanish, with accent on the penultimate syllable.) As a person...

Re: Friday, January 22, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

On a side note, I hate categories on words that are a bunch of letters long. Usually it doesn’t matter if you make a word plural or not. But it did here and could have cost Brian the game because he couldn’t figure out on the fly how many letters are in consonant. I think having the word "or" in th...

Not their first foray into that type of category and they never use quotes in it. Quotes in a category have a very specific rule. Some examples: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=4904 - WORDS WITH(IN) FRIENDS http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6839 - IN ORDER http://www.j-arc...

Re: Friday, December 18, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Surprised they didn't place a "Gloria" cat to the left of "In excelsis deo". I'm wondering though if it's written up correctly in the archive? It's not In "excelsis deo'? I ask because this way seems more logical and because the letter N actually does not appear in any answers. The category title d...

Re: Friday, December 11, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Appomattox should not have been accepted for where Lee surrendered. Why not? Because the McLean house is in the village of Appomattox Court House, not Appomattox (which is a few miles to the west). I didn’t know there was a city of Appomattox. So his response was just plain wrong, not a shortened v...

Re: Fun with GSN's "Master Minds"

0/6 for horse's walk. Thought at least one of the Master Minds would have took a little time to think that if you hear all four of the horse's steps, it would have to be going very slow. I have absolutely nothing to do with horses, but I have a vague memory of learning something about horses' gaits...

If you get Jeopardy on a TEGNA owned Station, it may go away Starting WEndesday. https://seekingalpha.com/news/3640067-t ... pproaching Still no KSDK (St. Louis NBC affiliate). I had sort of a double-preemption today: the 4:30 CST time was preempted by the Ravens-Steelers game, which was preempted ...

Re: Monday, November 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was an undergrad in the late '70's-early '80's at an engineering school (i.e., Nerd Central), so I could quote about half of this movie before I had ever seen it. By now I've seen the movie several times (and Spamalot twice in theaters) but had never heard the factoid from the clue. I think it too...

I didn't like the wording of the clue for which the correct response was "wastes". Mercury and asbestos are not wastes, per se. I would have been happier with the clue if it had ended, "...these, which might contain asbestos or mercury".

I've always pronounced it as "louse", a diphthong rather than two syllables.

Has something like "First Lady Truman" always been acceptable? Yes, I know there's only one, but somehow I had the idea that a first name or moniker (such as Lady Bird) has always been required for first ladies.

I thought of Type A, but couldn't make any connection back to Cannonball, so I went with 'adrenaline junkie'. I don't think it was a very good clue. I actually started with adrenaline junkie but talked myself into switching to Type A (fortunately a short response). I likewise thought it was a lousy...

Why the hell was NASA in the clue? What do they have to do with droughts? The short answer is that it's there because NASA did the study. It also indicated that it's a(n) historical study and not a contemporary one. And 70% of the continent combined with 1,000 years of history suggests it's based o...

Re: Monday, September 28, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My opinion is that the writers are not giving Alex nearly enough "also accept", "BMS", or "do not accept" guidance. I'm guessing that it's partly attributable to a lack of in-person collaboration. This clue should have included: "do not accept Congress, do not accept House of Representatives". Ther...

If anything, it's an oversight in the question-making room, which may or may not be primarily on Zoom nowadays. And J! work may be significantly more solitary - reading through a stack of clues instead of collaborating. My opinion is that the writers are not giving Alex nearly enough "also accept",...

Re: Tuesday, September 29, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think Alex was downright wrong to say that he was nowhere near. The source for most people of that name is the song Hiawatha. Yeah. The relevant passage of Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha is: I agree that Alex's comment was way off base. I knew the response first from the Gordon Lightfoot song ...
