I made up a place called Golga. At least the first letter was correct.
I invented Goliad.

Re: Fun with GSN's "Best Ever Trivia Show" [Spoilers]

I was a few days behind and just got caught up. I'm enjoying the show more than I had expected to. On 8/29, a player was 400 points behind with one question to go and went with the expert. On 8/30, the same scenario happened and Sherri pointed out that the only possible way to win would be for the ...

Re: Fun with GSN's "Common Knowledge"

Two heartbreaking losses in a row on the VERY LAST question. First the Blondetourage on Wednesday. Had the lead through the entire episode and then said Charlotte's Web when asked about "Scarlett", the sequel for Gone With the Wind. Today's loss was even more painful. The Silver Foxes had the lead ...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Can I also just say: Looking at it from your own perspectives, what on earth would it do to your ToC preparation in the back of your head if all people were doing was talking about how you got invited and possibly even calling your ethics into question? I'm incredibly disappointed in many people in...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Just in case my previous post left any ambiguity, I think Emma had/has every right to accept the invitation from TPTB to participate in the ToC. None of the "uncomfortableness" I feel about the situation is directed at her. It's more a matter of feeling as if I thought I had understood the ground ru...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Hmm. I like Emma and am interested to see how this plays out, and I recognize that TPTB have every right to include her, but the inclusion of a 3x winner over 4x winners (including one with more dollar winnings) just makes me uncomfortable. (Independently, I am happy about the announcement that was ...

Re: Tuesday, July 9, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It took me a few seconds to put the pieces together, but I got Leonidas without much difficulty. I don't understand all the guesses of mythical people when we were given a date of death in historical times. While Leonidas was an instaget for me, I understand he may be obscure to many. But yes, all ...

Re: Friday, June 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My cable box glitched so I read the clues from the Archive. Did they really give "You are lost and gone forever, oh my darling Clementine" as the finish of that classic American lyric? I've always heard "You are lost and gone forever, dreadful sorry Clementine". Someone posted a mention of FJ! on a ...

I'm not in LL81, but, for those of you who are, this is a reminder that today is the Midseason Classic. Also, FYI, when you let your subscription run out, your login stays active surprisingly long. My membership officially expired on May 14 and I had been disappointed because a 1DS in which I had wa...

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

(made-up) TELEVISION The opening chords of this TV series' theme song was derived from the 1946 movie The Killers The correct response: What is Dragnet ? My (fairly strongly held) opinion is that you need to change "opening chords" to "opening notes". The initial nine notes (if I'm counting correct...

Re: Thursday, June 13, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

For the Rio Grande clue, for some reason I was fairly confident they were going for Rio Bravo, but I would have hit a brick wall if asked for more information. A cursory online search indicates that Rio Bravo (sin del Norte) would probably be accepted. I usually do well with wordplay, but I did terr...

Re: Thursday, June 6, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I don't believe Arlo Guthrie is more famous than his father, but at 71 he's lived a lot longer than his dad, who died at 55... Just in case anyone isn't aware of it: Woody died of Huntington's disease. Huntington's is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder, so Arlo had a 50% chance of inheriting it...

Re: Thursday, June 6, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Just because I'm in denial about it being a losing battle: Emma definitely said "Asterisk", not "Asterix". I thought I heard Asteris. I just ran it back and I can hear the final "k", but (full disclosure) I'm using a literal VCR. I got FJ!. Like ChexMix, I'm curious whether special instructions wer...

Re: Thursday, June 6, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I liked Emma and was rooting for her to make the ToC, but I liked all three contestants in this exciting game and would have been OK with any of them winning.

Just because I'm in denial about it being a losing battle: Emma definitely said "Asterisk", not "Asterix".

If I can't be pedantic here, then where?

I heard a long litany earlier this week about how (though not why) it's the NBA Finals but the Stanley Cup Final.

GSN is going to show James's "The Chase" episode with commentary by Ken Jennings today (Monday) at 4PM Eastern time (YMMV).
This was replayed yesterday but I forgot to record it, and I don't see any more airings scheduled on GSN. Is there a way to watch this that I'm not thinking of? Thanks.

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

It was nice to (possibly) end my LL career with a top 5% on the Wind Quintets 1DS. I hadn't been sure exactly how it works near one's expiration date; my official expiration date was May 14, but I can still log in for the time being. Oddly, the Member Center now lists me as a "Rookie", which designa...
