Re: Monday, September 18, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I'm hoping I misread the wording of the clue asking for "The Graduate." I thought it said something to the effect that Benjamin Braddock (Hoffman) broke up a wedding and then hopped on a bus with the mother of the bride?????? I'm pretty sure he left the mother of the bride (Anne Bancroft) fuming in...

I guessed Takata on Q5 but Samsung would have been my second guess. I was shocked Takata wasn't even the MCWA!

Re: Monday, September 18, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I'm in the Dave Kendall camp on this FJ. Got it right without trouble, but still think it's a stinker. I guess it had a bit of a TOM if you know the Hebrew word for servant ( ebed ) and/or God ( yah ). I was looking for something with "yah" in it, but nothing came to mind. Maybe given a few minutes...

Not a distinguished game, but my least favorite moment was when Ellen decided it was time to enunciate on Homophonic Pairs for 1000: Miss-sile Missal . Shouldn't she have been counted wrong for that??! I wondered the same thing. I kind of felt she should have been negged. But if she had been, I thi...

And that "doge" question was my favorite in the history of the site. I didn't even read that last sentence, and now that you bring it up, I don't even know what it means. It's always nice to beat a TOC Champion. It was one of those days where I knew all 6 instantly. Now, when you read this, y...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

I had a tough tie yesterday 6(5)-6(4). My opponent got Jasper Johns for three points despite art being toward the bottom of his categories. He missed Singapore and fulcrum, both of which I figured he'd know for sure. That's the way it goes sometimes. I'll certainly take the tie over a loss! I missed...

Re: Thursday, September 14, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I got thrown by the "wow!" clue's referring to that word as an "audio term." Wow (usually paired with flutter) refers to an irregularity in the playback speed of a tape or record. I remember the term well from the days of cassette decks. Wow and flutter figures were always published. For FJ it took...

So... Prince William much? I get this about once a month or so, but I promise—I'm not him! (I'm currently beating him in the balding game (for now) but losing in the pudge category.) Prince William probably has things pretty good, but on the other hand he's never appeared on Jeopardy! so you've got...

Would you accept just "Casey" for "Mighty Casey?"
I can't see any reason why just "Casey" wouldn't be accepted.

That's the point. You don't need to know there are Texas towns with those names. They're inferred based on the clue wording.

I thought of Scipio Africanus before coming to my senses on FJ.

Research reveals that "Africanus" was a title bestowed due to his victories over Hannibal in the Punic Wars. He wasn't born in Africa.

I am proud to get the monopsony question from dim memories of my college economics class without the TOM at the end of the question, although the TOM did give me confirmation that I was right. :D That was one of my proudest gets, too. Funny, both my wife and I had to choose between two guesses on FJ. I thought of Adele and Taylor Swift and made the correct choice. Her two choices were Rihanna and Beyonce.

Re: Monday, September 11, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

To me the framing of the clue wasn't that challenging. It seemed to clearly point to an English-born writer who had spent some time near Taos, New Mexico sometime prior to 1929. If you knew who that was it was a slam dunk. But based on the results so far it seems like a fairly obscure fact.

I went with Robert Louis Stevenson knowing he spent some time in the U.S. but didn't think the timing was right. It was news to me that D.H. Lawrence lived in Taos. Definitely something to commit to memory!
