Re: Tuesday, January 23, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I wonder how tall (contestant) Alex is? He looked gigantic, but could be the other two were on the short side. I've read quite a bit of Sherlock Holmes, so this Final came to me quickly, but not real surprised it was a triple-stumper. It will be interesting to see how it polls. I suspect it will be ...

Re: Monday, January 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I still don't know what they meant by putting quotes around city - as if it wasn't really a city or city was supposed to be part of the response or what? I think the intent was that they only needed the "New Siberia" part for a response and "City" could be left out. They were looking for "this 'cit...

Re: Monday, January 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I don't know German, but "battle" is the first translation for Kampf in the Cambridge German-English dictionary. An abridged English translation of Mein Kampf was published in 1933 as My Struggle in England, but My Battle in America. The Norwegian, Min Kamp can also be translated as "my battle" or ...

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread

I hate myself for missing Q1. I could see the bobbing 1980s hair, I remembered that it was alliterative, but I just couldn't drag Sally Struthers' name out of my brain. "Sissy Spacek" was incorrect. Well I hope my opponents enjoy their easy points boost in this ML. I didn't like the implicati...

Re: Monday, January 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Me, too. When the clue asks for A word it doesn't seem like a two word response should be correct. When extra information is given, as long as the extra information is given isn't incorrect, it's ruled correct. ("I, Nero" would have been negged, for example.) I thought the clue said "first word?" G...

I can't believe this guy needed to ask the audience, let alone that 90% of them didn't get the right answer of 'C'.
Classic.

I'm in both the Gen X and Sports Images MLs.

How are there people who have never eaten a Triscuit?

Seems like there are lots of people who aren't fans of Triscuits, but I think they're pretty good--assuming you don't choke on one.

If you want to simply say that Tim Horton is not the name of the chain, I think that leads to a very slippery slope where you’d expect that they’re going to neg people if they say Krogers or Wal marts, etc. Some of those things can be grinding to the ear but without a doubt there are a lot of them ...

Re: Thursday, January 18, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

In the Crossword Clues "S" category (7 letters) where the correct response was "What is soprano?" I said "What is a soloist?" Judges? Good question. I also wondered if "What are singers?" would have worked. The clue was "BEVERLY SILLS OR MARIA CALLAS (7)". I suppose one could argue that the word "o...

^ My wife and I have been watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and we saw the episode tonight that your avatar comes from. What a hilarious show! Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go read the latest issue of Blimp Aficionado.

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread

I thought I'd do a little better in "Machines" since I got ten right. That only got me 84th percentile. I should have gone out on a limb a little more on my moneying. Someone managed 10th place with 10 correct and I was way down at 136th.

I'd be surprised if that FJ polls under 90%.
That's probably a bit high. I'm sure there are some people who have never heard of Triscuits, I'd say 75-80%.
If someone posts that they've never heard of Triscuits I'm going to yell like squarekara.

I used to teach at Carnegie Mellon, and I still bit on the Heinz negbait. Doesn't help when you just think of the place as CMU. Well, this CMU grad Pavlovianly immediately said "Mellon!". But I would have known it even if I had stopped to think about it. Out of curiosity, how do people at CMU prono...

Re: Wednesday, January 17, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I would have liked Gilbert to take a stab at the last clue, even just to make a joke. As a former Chicagoan, I know the Pritzkers well, but even a guess of "Hilton" would have been worth it. My two thoughts were Hilton and Marriott. Would have never come up with Pritzker without a architecture priz...

"Presenter" didn't sound like it narrowed down to any Microsoft program over any other to me. Maybe it's the Mac user in me. Powerpoint has almost become a generic term for the type of presentation one does by using computerized slides. Again, probably one that just flew over my Macintosh-centric m...

Oh, come on. That's the whole reason for having this discussion board. The "what if?" scenarios are interesting. I don't think it's unreasonable to take the position that this judgment was in error and this error potentially affected the outcome. I certainly don't mean to cast aspersions by saying ...

You're welcome to debate whether or not they should have done so, but the discussion should only focus on that part only, and not on its effect on the outcome of the game.
