Re: Thursday, April 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

James' game is very rhythmic, a pretty uniform pace. The zone.I think a couple things to try would be to 1) Slow down the pace of the game, change it's rhythm. Try to alter the cadence of the gameplay away from James' tempo. Slow responses, slow clue choices, etc 2) Extreme bouncing - basically pic...

Re: Thursday, April 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

But as comfortable as he is now with the buzzer, no challenger will take him down unless it's essentially a two-person match. Interesting hypothesis. It will be interesting to see if it holds true or not. He could also certainly go down by betting a lot on a Daily Double, missing it, and not being ...

Re: Thursday, April 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm also tired of James' mastery. For the record I wasn't implying that I'm "tired" of James. He's a fantastic player and fun to watch. I may be crazy but I seem to remember there being a category or two over the years that did actually force the contestants to go from top to bottom "Force" is prob...

Re: Thursday, April 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

That FJ took me longer than it should have, but I finally got the pun and came up with Aquaman. At this point it seems like we need either Austin Powers or LSV to step in to take James down. :D Don't forget Lampy the man who has beaten James head to head. Or Schliemann. LSV has posted he won't try ...

Re: Wednesday, April 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Just out of curiosity - why? Personally, I LOVE watching greatness. Well, I am kind of on your page, I like the big tournaments and would love if they were every three years (every year might be a bit much), but I can see being annoyed by a lot of the newer champions. In the old days, even the best...

Re: A question about Coryat scoring...

If you're doing this at home to evaluate where you are, isn't it highly dependent on the players? I've been trying to gauge my performance and there is a huge gap between the episodes available on YouTube with average players and the recent broadcast episodes. No, it doesn't depend on the players b...

Also, why DOES it lock you out? I'm not fond of that.
Because they want a disincentive for buzzing in early.

Re: Tuesday, April 16, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

That wasn't very sportsmanlike of either Adam or James. Snicker aside, I'm guessing the pace of the game was such that they probably didn't even notice at the time that they were doing that. You're up there, and you want to get right answers and that's pretty much your focus. Yes, I wouldn't fault ...

Re: Tuesday, April 16, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

New vocabulary term: the Holzhauer Horizontal is picking the highest valued clues across the board first to build up a large cash total before landing on a DD and then going all in in the J! round or very large in the DJ! round. It makes perfect sense for a dominant player to use this strategy, but...

Wow, I don't audit my Lach Trash, but I did remember stylus, and understand why nobody should know that now. Just two days after Record Store Day? I realize vinyl is still a bit of a niche thing, but LPs sales have increased dramatically in the last few years: https://www.statista.com/chart/7699/lp...

Re: Monday, April 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Very nice try, Kevin, and let me add to the list of those who didn't notice the rocking.

Weird coincidence of the night: for some reason the phrase "the granddaddy of them all" came into my head during the first commercial break and then there was a clue about the Rose Bowl immediately after that.

Re: Wednesday, April 10, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Clearly the show needs the non-disclosure hammer to avoid spoilers, but it seems to me they are also very unlikely to wield that hammer unless absolutely necessary. I'm sure the wording indicates you may forfeit winnings, not that you shall forfeit them.

Re: Wednesday, April 10, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

If it is determined that Holzhauer did indeed create the site his status for the TOC will come into serious doubt. I think this is very doubtful. James is going to be a popular champ who may be one of the greatest players ever. It's going to take something a whole lot more egregious than that to ke...

In fairness I knew more about the situation.
Don't be coy. Tell us more!
My favorite theory was that I did the website. That one made me chuckle.
Maybe it was Roger Craig? Nah, Roger would have produced a much nicer site. :D

Re: Wednesday, April 10, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It would be sad if that FJ! clue did not go 2/2. Come on writers, really? It was pretty poor. Essentially "name the last ruling family of the Russian Empire." I would have said "Monitor and Virginia" for the ironclads clue. I'm sure there are other pedants out there who would have done the same. :D
