Re: Tuesday, October 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I still don't understand why that "rose is a rose..." quote is famous.

Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Ferlinghetti was definitely a YEKIOYD, but I think it's a reasonably well-known bit of trivia that he owns or owned the City Lights book shop in SF. My twisted logic was, "Well, Ghirardelli is from there, and they're both Italian, so let's go with that." :) And don't forget the Moscone Center, name...

Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This was a game of some weird DD issues. Even though I got to the intended response, I still have no idea how to parse DD1. "... & will give you the name of a hunter"? What? My wife said "crocodile" thinking the TOM was "the Crocodile Hunter." I agree it was poorly worded. Apparently what the clue ...

Clam for me. Mrs Penguin said oil rig worker, which I thought was a decent guess.
I like it.

Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought Erin said "verbotem," like her mouth just wanted to say "verbatim" with a different middle vowel, then corrected herself after/while Alex ruled her correct. The T/D issue is a non-issue to me, as the English T frequently gets pronounced as a D in between vowels. Think Taylor Swift saying ...

Like Erin I said underwater welder. Not sure why the audience thought it was funny because it is a very dangerous job.
Plenty of references out there stating that it is one of the, if not the most dangerous jobs. For example: https://kmhk.com/the-five-deadliest-jobs-in-america/

Did it sound to anyone else like Erin said "verboden" rather than "verboten?" Is that really an accepted pronunciation?

(Also, the old part of my high school had terrazzo floors, as in "don't run on the terrazzo floors.") I remember the IM locker room at my college had a sign up saying "caution: terrazzo floor and grating are slippery when wet." (so maybe not the best place to install a terrazzo floor and grating?)

Re: Thursday, October 10, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The FJ! clue was a fail for me in processing the clue. I wrote Northwest Passage and by the time I realized my error I went on two detours to Spanish Armada and Royal Navy leaving me no time to get back on track. I deserve a miss for letting that one get away. Yeah, I failed too, but thought the cl...

I did think of Little Steven's "Sun City" at first, but Paul Simon came very quickly thereafter. I'm shocked that some people here aren't familiar with Paul Simon as a solo artist.

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

Wow, I'm just now making the connection that the 19th century poetry collection was "Leaves of Grass." It didn't even cross my mind that it was something that wasn't originally published in Japanese. Shoulda reread the question!

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

Slim Whitman ads were ubiquitous in the 70’s/80’s. Album $7.98 8 Track or Cassette $9.98 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2D9QwHzLpk I feel like I saw those Slim Whitman commercials a lot during "Tic-Tac-Dough," but it might just be that Slim Whitman and Wink Martindale both had funny names and tha...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

On the slim one, was anyone actually familiar with any names besides Slim Whitman? In my head, I convinced myself I’d heard of Guitar Slim, but I can’t name anything about him, like when he lived. Or what he looked like. Or any of his songs. The only reason I even have some knowledge of Slim Whitma...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

I managed to scrape by with 23rd place out of 26th in my rundle. I lost the final day, but the person just below me did too. I lost 6(5)-8(5) with my opponent getting Leaves (3 points), but missing Slim (1 point). He didn't have a great pop music score, but I figured at least a couple of the people ...

I'm going with Tyler Perry/Unfriend/Emergency Dentists in that order.
Solid choices. I'm a fan of $0.50 for the rapper because I'm not even sure it was really meant as a joke. Those are the best kind. :D

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

I'm just one spot above the relegation line going into the final match day and it's very precarious. The person below me has the same number of points, but has -22 MPD to my -19. I'm still leading my rundle in correct answers against by eight, so luck just hasn't been on my side this season.

I got this FJ, but I have to say I thought about it for the whole 30 seconds wondering if I was wrong. I've never thought of the volcanoes being somehow separate from the Cascade Range. Wikipedia agrees with the distinction, though: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascade_Volcanoes The Olympic Mounta...

Re: LL BWA Entries

I think it's funny that Amelia Bedelia made it for two different questions. :D

I think this one is my fave:
Q: According to the lyrics of a popular rock song released in 1995, despite all of his rage, Billy Corgan was still just a what?
A: A BILL SITTIN’ HERE ON CAPITOL HILL

The torch doesn't go on boats or planes; it only goes on land. Don't be ridiculous.
The torch is always lit in Olympia, Greece and travels from there to wherever the Olympics are being held, thus it can't always travel by land.
