Re: Friday, November 27, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I knew Zimbabwe is too far south since it borders South Africa, but wasn't sure about Zambia. Ended up picking it after considering Uganda. There are just so many countries in Africa it's difficult to keep them all straight.

So would they accept "ahm?" No, but maybe "åm" would pass muster. That is a totally different syllable: https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/%C3%A5m Besides, it is pronounced differently in parts of the country that haven't undegone the om/åm merger. Come on, "om" and "åm" are pretty close in pronuncia...

First Ken, now Sajak is canceled!
I watched the show and it seemed pretty tongue in cheek on Pat's part to me.
How did my post about it seem to you? :D
Sorry, it's sort of hard to read the room here when some people are accusing KJ of "hateful" posts.

And I thought it was well known that Madonna was from Detroit. Well, Michigan anyway. She was born in Bay City and grew up in the Detroit 'burbs. Eminem made it pretty well known that Eight Mile Road is the northern city limit of Detroit. Rochester Hills, where Madonna attended HS, is something lik...

I didn't realize Cher was from California, but it definitely seemed more of a hint against Babs, so Cher it was...

Seemed pretty close to the right year for Moonstruck, too, so I was quite confident.

Re: Hosting Question

I don't really follow Twitter much, but my wife does and she follows Ken. From what she's shown me he's usually pretty clever and funny. Obviously anyone's going to lay an egg once in a while in that arena. If we've learned one thing from Spinal Tap it's that there's often a fine line between clever...

Personally, I thought Kiki was quite overvalued in the top row. Am I wrong?

Instaget FJ.
What lower value could it have had than the top row?
And by over, I of course mean under.
Definitely. I still don't know what that song was and I knew all the others.

Re: Hosting Question

I'd be a little surprised if Brad wasn't on the slate to host sometime after Ken's tenure. I bet they'll give all three from the GOAT tourney a shot at hosting.

Can it be true that so many people have never seen the 1948 film "Bill and Coo", starring Burton's Birds?
Both Bill and Coo and Burton's Birds are unfamiliar to me.

Re: J! hosting plans post Alex

Seems like a good call. We'll get a nice Alex retrospective and then get to see the final few new games with Alex hosting after the new year begins. I hope there aren't any college football preemptions...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I was surprised the "Aa", "Pahoehoe" correct % was as high as it was. Did people get it mostly from Scrabble? I guessed alcohol I think it's just a bit of a common trivia trope that the Hawaiian language has many words for different types of lava (actually, upon looking it up, it seems those are th...

P.S. interesting to hear that Andy is a masters swimmer. I had that fact on my card, too, but Alex didn't mention it for me. He probably thought of it as more of a fifth interview kind of fact. :D Alex didn't even seem to know what "masters swimming" meant, so not surprising! On a different subject...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

51 for Golden Gate? I was guessing that one would be in the 90s. 51 was shocking, but I wouldn't have thought 90s. I would have guessed 80%. I only missed Luxemburg yesterday with the MCWA of Franz. Still got the win and I'm in good shape as we've crested the halfway point of the season. I just rea...

I flipped the Kosman Koin for the southern gothic writer and it landed on Carson McCullers.
I went with Ann Rice. She's about as southern gothic as it gets to me.
There's your problem: you confused a southerner who writes gothic fiction with southern gothic. :)

Re: Friday, November 20, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

And yes I say "calm" with an audible L. That's why pronunciation-based clues annoy me. Don't even get me started on the problems with the mary/merry/marry merger... Possible poll question? I would think most people don't pronounce "calm" with a silent L. It almost feels like the show is trolling us...
