Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

The theme lyrics only say “this tropic port”, I would think there’s more than one in Hawaii. Yes, but anyone who has seen the show a lot would know they left from Honolulu. I admit it's a fairly minor plot point in a 50+ year old show, but if you're of a certain age you very likely grew up watching...

Self promotion zone: LL One-Day Special: Doomed Voyages , smithed by CavaliereM Fun fact: The S.S. Minnow was named that because the executive producer of Gilligan's Island, Sherwood Schwarz, wanted to get back at then-Chairman of the FCC Newton Minow (just one 'n'), who had denigrated what was on ...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

are the results of the voting up yet? Speaking of up -- look up. ;) https://learnedleague.com/hist/awards/85.php Here are the top 5 BWAs. The winner would've been much better, in my eyes, had it been only a single word (since that's what the question asked for). Thought the one that got 2nd was rea...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Fascinating to see how people worked out the Vancouver one. I'd imagined there'd be more people citing Granville simply because they remember the street or the island from an actual visit to the city, but way more people got there from Lionsgate Studios and Simon Fraser University than I'd have tho...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

So, why would I ever have heard of those bridges? Or been able to put them in Vancouver? Are you trying to take a page from TPH's book? :D I figured this one would be hard for people who have never been to Vancouver or at least live fairly close to the area. It was my defensive three pointer since ...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Was surprised today by how many managed to get prisoner's dilemma, which I was completely thrown off by... I assumed the answer would be something specific to price-setting and oligopoly, and I couldn't come up with anything. (I can see in retrospect how the description is prisoner's dilemma-y, of ...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I was floored that 50% thought the Great Salt Lake is larger than Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. I'd say that most of that 50% couldn't name any other "Great" lakes and decided that some answer is better than no answer. Good point. Although wasn't there a question about Great Bear and Great Slave Lake...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

That was my first thought, but calling it a "series" made me second guess. I was surprised by the number of people on the message board who said this as well. It's a regularly-scheduled television program with a consistent title and format -- it's as much a series as "Jeopardy!" is. For the record ...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Damn, what was that show that F. Murray Abraham was on? Oh well, guess I'll have to go with my second choice, Saturday Night Live. I actually thought of Amadeus for a second because I was confusing Peter Scolari (of "Bosom Buddies" with Tom Hanks) and Tom Hulce. I don't think Amadeus would be consi...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I won yesterday, but I'm the only person among those on my player tracker who missed SNL. That was my first thought, but calling it a "series" made me second guess. I ended up going with Taxi thinking of Christopher Lloyd in "Back to the Future" and Danny DeVito in "Twins."

Was anyone else helped on the sial question by having seen the sima clue in the Ryan Fenster rerun on Thursday?
Absolutely, although I'd hope I would have sussed it out anyway.

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

A very satisfying 5(3)-4(4) victory. I used to work for a company that had 5 of the Whiz Kids. Of course, they weren't the ones who went to Ford, so I couldn't pull that one. I remembered that after I saw the answer. But yeah, I should have gotten that one. Ford was my first instinct and then I fig...

Having lived in Los Angeles for 30+ years helped more than a bit. Expected ASM to play hard, but not 12% hard.
I knew exactly who the question was referring to, but just couldn't pull her name. The MCWA for that one was Billy Graham which is quite funny.

Only escaped my first 0(0) by getting Davy for 3. Thank you J! clue repetition for being above the low get percentage on that one.
This LL season is going like the year 2020: started out with so much promise and then just went to hell in a handcart!

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

And if you thought Friday played hard ... someone must have pissed Thorsten off, because the average get rate Monday was a whopping 26%. I track some really good players, and there wasn't a single 9(6) among them. My opponent was FrankJ yesterday and he gave me a nice drubbing 2(3)-6(5). Nice job, ...

I recognized Ahmet Ertegun and Jann Wenner, but I convinced myself it was something to do with an AIDS charity.
I recognized Ertegun and Stein as record company moguls, and Wenner from Rolling Stone. AIDS and the Ethiopian famine were the two things that came to mind for me initially.

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I'm pretty shocked to have placed third overall in the midseason classic! Got 11 right, only missing confit. Somehow I managed to money the five most difficult questions. The last one to come to me was Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I knew many of the names so knew it had something to do with music, bu...
