Re: Friday, September 25, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I knew Phil Mickelson is 50 because he's a month younger than me, so he was a fairly easy choice. Even so I did give some consideration to Tony Hawk, but was fairly certain he's at least a little older (and sort of hard to believe he'd still be on the list). That was laughably bad for a whole bunch ...

Re: Thursday, September 24, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Sooooo, do I get to check the weekend's FJ poll if I wrote down "neutron star" or not? We need someone with more astrophysical expertise to chime in, but based on my reading, and the wording of the clue, "neutron" may not be acceptable. As I understand it: - Neutron stars were proposed in theory in...

Re: Thursday, September 24, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Came up with "neutron star" for FJ, and after looking at the definition, it might've passed muster. 100% acceptable. LGM-1 was a neutron star. Unless there were a neutron discovered earlier and not identified as a pulsar, for which the invisible star of the binary Sco X-1 seems to fit the bill. Goo...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I had a disastrous final match day yesterday, falling from second to fourth in my rundle and also dropping out of the lead in the Maso standings. All because I missed a single question (Q1: I put Dunkirk). Congrats to FrankJ for the victory yesterday, first place in the rundle, and knocking me out o...

Re: Wednesday, September 23, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Did anyone else hear Lisa pronounce Edward Murrow's name as "Morrow?" I was expecting a reversal for that. Also has anyone else noticed Dana's glasses being fogged at the start of her shows? Tonight my wife speculated it's because the contestants are wearing masks until right before the cameras come...

For FJ I actually put Cabrini down first and then switched it to Montessori.

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I feel like I got pretty lucky yesterday with my 7(5)-6(5) victory. I thought I was only going to get credited for four correct, because I put "FIFA World Cup" for Q4. The other one I missed was Estonia (I put Tajikistan).

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

Out of the players I track (12 out of the 15 are in an A rundle--lots of heavy hitters), five of the 15 got Q4 (Reebok) right, and seven of 15 got Q5 (Tallchief) right. I thought that was interesting since the overall get rate was 46% for Q4 and 5% for Q5. I got Tallchief right, but so did my oppone...

I'm curious how other chemistry minded players missed this one, since it polled at only 12%.
I thought about it for quite a while and finally came up with cement.

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

One day I'll stop mixing up cation and anion...yesterday was not that day. Cation has a 't' in the middle, which looks like a +. Anion could be slightly mispronounced like n (for negative)-ion. One I read yesterday (after the fact, obvs) was "Cat(ion)s are Pawsitive" I saw that. Awesome mnemonic!

Re: Tuesday, September 15, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Saying Barry and Berry are different names seems like it's trying to equate it to something like Manet vs Monet. The thing is those names have distinctly different vowel sounds, Monet with a long O and Manet with a short A. (At least I hope we all agree on that!) If either one didn't exist, you cou...

Re: Tuesday, September 15, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think it comes down to our personal biases based on our accents. If you think Berry and Barry are homophones, you probably also assume the name Berry is a spelling variant of Barry. If you think they are pronounced differently then you see them as two distinct names. Both sides are right and both ...

Re: Tuesday, September 15, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

FWIW, I'm a Kerry and I pronounce my name the same way I pronounce Carrie and carry. You in fact prove the point more than anyone else here. To my ears your board name is an almost pun - good enough for a message board name, but not exact. But to your ears, which are obviously the ones that matter,...

Re: Tuesday, September 15, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Nope, no mention on the Wednesday show about the Tuesday FJ! round. Good thing I didn’t wager too much. Hoping to hear an official response at some point. From Reddit and the 9/16/ thread: Hello, I’m sure you are getting a lot of emails about this: Is there an official explanation for the Berry / B...

Re: Tuesday, September 15, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I have a coworker who, like me, is a native of Michigan. She says "Welcome to Donald's", "hambugger", "onsweet tea", and "melkshake". She probably goes "acrost" the "rairoad" tracks to the "libary", too. But does she read the "noosepaper?" The "onsweet tea" one is a bit interesting... One I've noti...

Re: Tuesday, September 15, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Someone mentioned "pen" vs. "pin" in a Facebook group in relation to last night's FJ scoring decision. In a good part of the south those two words are pronounced the same and that might give some of us who would pronounce Barry and Berry the same some perspective. If the FJ clue was something like "...

Re: Tuesday, September 15, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Now I'm curious how you or indeed anyone could pronounce "two" and "to" (and/or "too" for that matter) differently. I pronounce them the same but I have heard two pronounced as “tyou”. (As the word you with a t in front of it). Never heard that, but of course it's very common to pronounce the "To" ...
