Re: LearnedLeague 78 - Official Thread

From what I can see we should have a pretty competitive bunch, mostly grouped in the 100-120 tca range, with a few consistently above that number like bomtr and teapot37. I was one of many leaguewide who set a career high in tca last season, hoping the regression to the mean is a gentle one!

Re: LearnedLeague 78 - Official Thread

I can step up to the plate, I’ve created a private rundle for jboarders, there are 12 hours to go, registration deadline is midnight Pacific tonight. Whoever wants to join can jump in, if you find yourself the odd person out, feel free to try to find someone to even us up, but I’m fine with whatever...

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

I haven't read the board thread on this yet so I don't know how much this has been debated, but to me the only way you get into a dilemma with this question is if you have both sets open at the same time, which is quite plausible: open one, read questions, plan to come back later, then open the seco...

I think it said the city had seven letters in its name.
That would make sense! Carry on, nothing to see here.

Re: Wednesday, July 25, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I had Managua/Nicaragua right away, but it’s just occurred to me, was there anything else in the clue to pin it? San Salvador also ends with the same last four letters of El Salvador. I don’t think having the same last 8 letters would make this an incorrect response as it does still have the same la...

Re: Monday, July 23, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

What a magnificent DD3 wager 8-) . Enough for the runaway if he can hoover up the rest of the clues, and enough to keep the lead if he misses the DD3. But then again, it cost him a big payday because a small lead at 15K would double up nicely. A lead at 15k or 22k is going to lead to the same payda...

Re: j-archive.com Is Blocking Me

I guess this has improved as when it happened in the past both jboard and j-archive were blocked. Or maybe you are blocked by both but using a workaround to access the board.

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

$21,600 pre-FJ, that has to be a record or nearly so in 1990, right? And maybe top 10 or 15 for regular play now, using adjusted scores?

Those wagers...woof. Not sure why I bothered calculating their optimal wagers, when I was pretty sure they'd just bet it all or close to it. Didn't see Michelle's wager coming though. If she hated the category, why bet anything, let alone enough to fall behind a double up by Wes (who shouldn't have...

Re: Wednesday, July 4, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I recall them always being called floaties when I was a kid (in the 80s), water wings became more common in the 90s, to the best of my recollection. Not sure if it was a brand name that became more widespread like Kleenex or if it's just another term for the same thing, but I believe it is probably ...

Suzanne didn't even bother trying to cover Dave and picked to cover Jim instead. This has been such a pet peeve I get frustrated over, second-guess betting. If Dave did get FJ! right and doubled, Suzanne would have lost! I can't tell whether Suzanne was lucky or brilliant. Sure, first-level strateg...

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

I added 6/22/88: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6028 Sports $400 has been “slightly” surpassed. It had actually been surpassed plenty of times already by 1988. By Paavo Nurmi back in the 1920s and by a slew of Soviet gymnasts. Not sure what they were going for here, if they intended ...

Re: Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

To me, this question was a toss-up between Dewey and Truman. Since it was widely expected that Dewey would win, it seems very possible that Truman could have sent a telegram congratulating Dewey on his "win," only to find out later that the results were in his favor. As it turns out, the election w...

Re: Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I tend to agree in hindsight that the usage of “then” is a decent pointer to Dewey over Truman. However, in the immediate aftermath of the clue and particularly given Alex’s reaction to the misses, I hated the clue as it seemed perfectly reasonable to give either Dewey or Truman if you have no perso...
