Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

I used to make an effort to keep up with the New York Times bestseller list, but gave up some time after the number of categories really exploded. So I felt quite clever when, on rereading the question about the two bestsellers, the significance of the phrase "abruptly withdrawn from scheduled publ...

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

Because I love a challenge almost as much as I love a gimmick, and since pannoni4 made the game available, here's another 17-years-ago today game, March 18, 2002. Karen Lempert vs. Jason Lautenschleger vs. Mary Mansfield. http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=1723 You've got Mary credited w...

Re: Friday, March 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was impressed by Lindsey's get in the book DD - was there any TOM for that at all? Folks have already disputed it's a Midwest city. What got me there was the year of the city's founding. Oklahoma was the only state I could think of in the middle of the country whose capital city could have been f...

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Maybe I'm confused, but I thought Jake Freud went for an answer he didn't mean to on the $30,000 question, to his benefit. The question was about Ekman's seven universal facial expressions, providing joy, anger, fear, and contempt as four of the expressions, and asking which of the four choices of ...

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

The first $50k: Never heard of Spy Wednesday but I knew that it was definitely Shrove Tuesday, which is also known as Pancake Day in the UK.(If my memory serves me correctly. Get it, serves? ) Well, actually... Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, same day as Mardi Gras, so you got...

I was bummed there wasn't a British player on the show to get negged for "What is Aluminium" as the "mi" is not in the exact middle.

Re: Reretaken Down

Austin Rogers game 9 reran this weekend. CHEMISTRY, $400: Gallium turns to liquid slightly above this temperature sometimes given as 72 degrees Fahrenheit The correct response was "room temperature" (it was a stand and stare), but I suddenly imagined that they couldn't really neg someone for saying...

Re: Tuesday, March 5, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Obviously this tournament was very lopsided, part of that is because nobody is even near the same league as Brad and Ken. But it also didn't help that both Brad and Ken got to choose from players that were actually better than the other four captains. Heck, Colby even ceded the top dog spot to a te...

Re: Possible schedule changes tomorrow

All CBS affiliates “may” be affected, I’m sure is what the poster meant. Any ET city with the show between 7 and 8 PM should be fine on the final Monday.

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

I misread the math question, and said range which I knew was the Y part of the formula (RTFQ). Oh dang, range IS specifically for the dependent variable, isn't it? I still may not have come up with domain, though. It's been years since I've done much mathematical graphing. I also went with range. T...

Re: Wednesday, February 27, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I figured they wanted “read the mind” but that sure is not how the phrase usually is used, so they’d have to take his, her, and anything else that fit. “Read one mind” seemed a bit iffy but wouldn’t really be fair to neg it as nothing makes it wrong.

Re: Tuesday, February 26, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Although they don’t know it, Team Julia was a correct response away from essentially clinching a wild-card. They would have just needed to avoid a negative score on Wednesday. They wanted to keep playing for the win(nothing wrong with that) rather than stay close to Team Austin with a conservative ...

Re: Monday, February 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I absolutely would’ve preferred to see ten games of jeopardy rather than eight with this impressive field. If I was drawing up the format (once the team component was predetermined) I would’ve had more of a round robin play with various combinations of the three teams playing in pre-lim matches. Sur...

And to preemptively respond to your reply, yes there are 11 billion other Roman gods and there are 11 billion other US states, I’m only asking you to know one of each.

Do you know the state capitals? Juneau is the capital of the largest state. Juno is married to Jupiter, king of Roman gods. Jupiter is the largest planet.

Largest state, largest planet, largest power of the Roman gods, all superlatives that go together and start with Ju

Hot take: Larissa is better than Brad, but Larissa is unlucky while Brad has the Devil's Own luck. Might I direct you to Kendall's Law, as so contained in the signature of user dhkendall? ;) I'm sure David means it to be humorous but Kendall's Law has always rubbed me very much the wrong way. It se...
