Re: What if they changed the tournament format so that the last-place finisher in the first day of the finals is elimina

I think the show has three podiums and America is used to seeing all of them occupied. I don’t see this ever happening. Could they? Sure. It wouldn’t make for a drastically different second game. The odds would point to a couple more triple stumpers without the third player to pick up clues, but by ...

Ok fine if you want to let the teens off the hook so you aren’t seen as criticizing actual children then ok, but for college students I say let them have it. :)

Re: Thursday, November 15, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Do you think Maya totally spaced and just assumed she could bet as much as she wanted as long as she stayed ahead of her opponents' pre-FJ totals? That's the only thing I can think of. She just totally forgot that they could double their scores. That's an interesting possibility. You may well be co...

Re: Thursday, November 15, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

That fj bet is the third instance of hubris in this tournament. When have contestants blown a lock game with an unnecessary wager? 1. No it isn't 2. Never, as far as we know (assuming by "blown a lock game" you mean "lost a lock game") This might not count, but Day 1 of Keith Williams' College Cham...

Did the Jeopardy! clue crew screw up? Spain used the Peseta. Unless they used the peso long back.

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Well, that was good timing; pub quiz just had a question asking for the only two people to win two Nobel Prizes in the same category. I only had one, but it was one more than my team would have had if I hadn't watched Millionaire today. If only I was on your pub quiz team. Marie Curie, Linus Paulin...

Re: Should the Teen Tournament Winner Get a TOC Invite?

I think it's not necessary to put them in the TOC every year, but it would be sad if they never got to play Jeopardy! again, especially for those that never lost a game. The UTOC feels like a good compromise, all of the Teen winners from the show's first 20 years had a chance to give it another shot...

I mean, there's the Buzzy Cohen strategy (playing for the win so you don't have to worry about wild cards)...
Playing for the win? You mean when he bet for the tie by not adding the extra dollar in his tournament QF?

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Two weeks?! Far too long. Nothing like some computational math to bring this thread back to prominence… (13 + 14) x 15 = not even a WAG on my part either. I can't for the life of me see an easier way to do 27 x 15. (Full disclosure: I spun my wheels on this one, and think it was pretty tough to expe...

Re: Monday, November 5, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

And yes, there are optimal wagers in Jeopardy. That's what game theory is all about. Unfortunately, "optimal actions" in classical game theory assume that the opponent is acting in his/her own best interest. That's why masters sometimes hate playing against tyros -- the master almost always wins, b...

Re: Monday, November 5, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Shouldn't she assume Jonathan knows how to bet from second and therefore she's going to lose on a double stumper if she bets to cover? In that case she might as well go big or go home. Children's lit also seems like a category that someone could easily feel very strong in, so if she felt she was hi...

Re: Monday, November 5, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Congrats to Mary Ann. We liked her a lot. But that wager was unfortunate and I'm glad it didn't bite her. She would have lost on a double-stumper when there was no need to do so--especially since Jonathan overwagered by $200. Shouldn't she assume Jonathan knows how to bet from second and therefore ...

Then again the large numbers of audio daily doubles in the early seasons may mean that none of those episodes ever see the light of day due to music licensing fees.

Re: Jeopardy on Netflix

I think it’s going to be a very long while, if ever, before this changes. I would guess that five years from now there will still be no legal way to watch current episodes on a daily basis other than through local stations. However, the fact that they are able to sell these tournament episodes to Hu...

Re: 2018 Current Events Study Guide

The Dodgers are only the 3rd team since 1964 to lose back to back World Series to different opponents. They can make even more history next year as it’s been nearly 100 years since a team lost two in a row but made it back a 3rd time.

I feel like this FJ was essentially a "you know it or you don't" type. Yes, I'm sure it was possible to use the hints and come up with it, but I'm skeptical that many people who had never heard this fact before actually came up with the correct response. I did not, by the way. I think you're massiv...

Wondering if Alan was aware that while Alex had him talking about doing the daily crossword in pen that he was standing next to not just a constructor but someone who demolished the field to take the crown as the best and fastest crossword solver in the country earlier this year.

Re: Monday, October 15, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I am proud of the fact I only got "Empire Strikes Back" in the Star Wars category. Seriously? An entire category on a mediocre sci-fi franchise that peaked with Episode IV (the origional) and has regressed consistently since? Low hanging troll bait. We've all got things we don't like in pop culture...
