Laura said jazz standards wasn't her bailiwick, but her name is one of the greatest jazz standards.

Re: Thursday, May 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought James was terribly bold on his DD. If he'd missed it, he would have been finished right there. No deposit, no refill. Yeah, a pretty stunning display of hubris. What does he think he is, 57/61 on daily doubles or something? What a rube! And even if you take out the 16400 he got from that ...

Re: Wednesday, May 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I disagree with the notion that contestants are delicate snowflakes who are above criticism. They are public figures. Liz's errors weren't typical mistakes of the Keats/Shelley variety or "you picked the wrong one." They were WAGs. "Western honky-tonk" isn't even a thing. That was a WAG on a $2000 c...

Re: Wednesday, May 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Liz was really channeling Weird Al there. "Texas Honky-Tonk" is the official state music? Does she even know what a honky tonk is? Jesus was crucified on Ash Wednesday? That was some expensive and unrecoverable guessing. The middle contestant proved my point by losing $2,000 on the Texas state music...

Re: Monday, May 20, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It seems like James is less interrupt-y. Maybe I tuned it out or missed it? Maybe Alex adapted and quit trying to add color? Could the CC's have coached James that he is hurting his likeability? That would be fair game for the CCs to do that. There is nothing that makes me dislike players more than...

Re: Tuesday, May 21, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I said this before James appeared on the show: There ought to be a rule that categories can only be played straight down. I said that during the recent team tournament when one or more players were playing horizontally. Then don't even bother with a board. Just read out the clues 1-by-1. It would b...

Re: Tuesday, May 21, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I had a "waiting for the other shoe to drop" feeling all through the first half of double jeopardy. It was obvious that Jason was desperately trying to find the Daily Doubles before the champ did. In a sense the game turned on that throwaway clue in the love category about the name for a person who ...

Just to clarify on #10. I think you mean someone who has served continuously since 1990, at least.

Re: Friday, May 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Not much DD action. Sarah bet low on her dj. And what an easy q. That was her chance to make a move in the game. And Francois only risked $1000 on his last chance DD. He is playing it conservatively. I know 1889 was the year The Wall Street Journal was founded and I had trouble moving past that for ...

All I really know of that song is Maurice and the joker/poker/toker etc. and I figured those would hit high. That combined with my mediocre response of oregano means I'm probably out of this thing.

I said Sapphos which I think would have been denied. I agree that the faulty spelling of Rachmaninoff would have been negged and the faulty spelling of tchaikovsky would have been accepted.

Unless the spelling of the clue pinned it otherwise, I think they would have had to accept bullion.

I suspected Benjamin was doomed when he contradicted Alex about pro bono work. And then Detroit? What an easy FJ. Knowing where SCt justices are from is mandatory. I think pot-kettle is racist, so I change that aphorism to "that's like the pot calling the kettle metal. " Largest cities on the Great ...

"Lest" is a conjunction? Damn it, Schoolhouse Rock, you LIED TO ME! You told me there were only three of those! Subordinating conjunctions include but are not limited to: After, before, once, when, whence, whenever, where, wherever, while. Coordinating conjunctions are known by the mnemonic FANBOYS...

Re: Monday, May 13, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Joe was the only one of the QF players who impressed me, so very strange to watch him crash and burn. Those teachers should be ashamed of how poorly they did in parts of speech. And Jane Addams was a stand and stare? For some reason I said Crimson for colourful Alabama school. Might be my biggest er...

Francois ran up a pretty big total against two very weak opponents. I don't think we'll be seeing him in the finals because he missed a lot of fairly easy questions. I had to laugh at his guess of Grant. In 1861 he graduated from West Point? In 1861 he was already running the whole spiel. And to boo...

Re: Tuesday, May 7, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think they would have had to accept Edmund Muskie as running mate for Hubert Humphrey. They didn't say that the person in the clue was presidential or VP candidate. Now it would be pushing it for them to accept Roger Moe, who was running mate of Hubert Humphrey III when he ran for governor of Minn...
