Re: Wednesday, June 10, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Right. My point was, February 4 to March 10 ≠ "late February."

"Pork you pine" doesn't really work, since pine in that sense isn't a transitive verb. I liked the rest of the category, though!

Re: Wednesday, June 10, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

HQ once got a lot of people out by asking what season Julius Caesar got assassinated; everyone tends to think of March as spring, but only the last third of it (give or take) is. On a related note, I was perplexed when Alex said that Ash Wednesday is in "late February." I was born on Ash Wednesday,...

I already liked Ben because he's a choral teacher, but now I find out he's on a recording that I own and love. And hey, look at that, he is!

Music teachers FTW!

Is it possible that the reason Alex didn't do Clinton or Thatcher impressions is they stopped tape and told him to knock it off? His Kissinger certainly wasn't helpful, and his McCarthy was so wrong that I just stared at the TV, flummoxed. I'm glad Lauren wasn't confused.

Re: Thursday, April 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I gotta defend the judges on the Charlie Parker ruling. Nicknames for people are by definition informal and unofficial, and they weren't asking specifically for his nickname, just his identity. So I think they would and should have accepted "Who is Charlie 'Sax God' Parker?" or "Who is the master of...

Re: Monday, April 27, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The correct pronunciation of "Concord" (with a schwa in the second syllable) is a homophone for "conquered". Lauren's pronunciation is not, but the judges have accepted much more egregious things lately so I shrug my shoulders and move on with life. Not trying to devolve into one of those endless p...

Re: Wednesday, April 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Those are the things you’re prepared to discuss, so when Alex curveballed me with who my favorite “dramatic author” was, my brain short circuited. Also, having never heard the phrase “dramatic author,” my brain took a few seconds to catch up to my mouth as I understood what he was asking. Meanwhile...

A leopard in your dorm? No way, but why not the leopard variety of this lizard that can run across the ceiling This correction suggestion came in: *error. Leopard geckos lack lamellae, the plate-like structures other geckos have that allow these geckos to adhere to surfaces, including ceilings. Wou...

And second... why was ‘using a pseudonym’ not accepted for the classical music clue? That was a dumpster fire of a clue. I not only know Fritz Kreisler composed violin music, I have performed some of it (as an accompanist)...and I had no idea what the intended response was. I suspect the contestant...

Re: Tuesday, April 7, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

In J!, the writers screwed me up... One of my pet peeves... They wanted a nickname of the State of Washington, and referred to the college, Washington State. Their nick is "Cougars". They wanted "Evergreen", which refers to the State of Washington. So, by the time my brain had shifted gears, they h...

Re: Friday, April 3, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Thank you for the correction, AFRET CMS; I guess I should have written that McCain was "Panama Canal Zone-born." I was just pushing back on the assertion that he was "born in Panama," which is misleading. If Hearst had been born in Hungary because his mother just happened to be there when she went i...

If you're looking for something to watch (and aren't we all), the recent documentary Joseph Pulitzer: Voice of the People is a fascinating biography. I instagot FJ from having seen that. In defense of those who went with Hearst, the clue said "Hungarian-born," and did not specify "Hungarian." John M...

Chronology and geography would have helped retrospectively - The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms are in the 20s, while For Whom the Bell Tolls and A Farewell to Arms are both set in Spain.
A Farewell to Arms is set in Italy.

Re: Friday, March 20, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Wasn't fond of the term "song" for O Fortuna, don't think that's accurate. It's a movement. I've been critical of the writers' misuse of "song" in the past, but I don't have a problem with the usage here. Carmina literally means "songs," and I think the Orff work can reasonably be considered a song...

They've been doing astrology-related clues for a long time. Anyway, I see the Mandela Effect as pop culture, not science. I think (hope) most people are aware that astrology is not scientific, and treat it as silly fun. I have no objection to that. But the phrase "Mandela Effect" was coined by, and...

Re: Wednesday, March 18, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The "Mandela Effect" is dumb pseudoscience and should not have been dignified with a category on America's Favorite Quiz Show. The "researchers" behind it have no relevant credentials, their work isn't peer-reviewed, and their methods and conclusions are often laughable. What happens is sometimes pe...

Re: Monday, March 16, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think it's important to point out that: 1) Singin' vs. singing has nothing to do with "grammar," and singin' isn't an "error" — it's an informal/dialectal pronunciation variant; and 2) "Dropping the g " is a total misnomer, since there is no /g/ sound in the -ing suffix. The letters ng represent t...
