I have heard of many -ocracy's but I don't recall ever hearing Technocracy.
You more often hear of technocrats, but it's an easy jump from there to the form of government.

Re: Monday, December 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

And for you Pavlovians, beat + poet(ry) = Ginsberg. Every time. If you want to replace poet(ry) with novel(ist), your choices broaden to Burroughs or Kerouac (but NOT Ginsberg). Those three names constitute a complete list of Beat writers for Jeopardy! purposes. In fact, they constitute a complete ...

I bet Alex is taking some heat for his "the other one" quip regarding Flo Jo.
I interpreted that as meaning the other female athlete connected to the Joyner family. Mayhap that doesn't help regarding Internet outrage.

Great game today. Andy, you really impressed me with your knowledge base. It’s too bad that things didn’t work out for you were fun to watch regardless. Instaget FJ.

I don't get this one if the clue is name the capital of Ethiopia. But I'm not a J! wannabe and don't plan to memorize world capitals. I am impressed at how easy many boardies think this was. I get that you know your capitals, but the clue was written as if it was not a current capital, so your shor...

Kind of a current events coupled with dream or nightmare Millionaire question: Of these four who is the only player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame? A: Orel Hershiser B: Harold Baines C: Joe Carter D: Will Clark Answer: Harold Baines (Lee Smith also got in) got in by a vote of Today's Game Era...

That was my first thought as well, but then decided that phrase meant more than one word, so went with "Main Street vs. Wall Street"

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

I knew every question from today's game. Muffy's brother was the contestant today. He made it all the way to the $30,000 question with all three lifelines. The question was which is not one of the grapes used in champagne. Thanks to my long surfs on the Archive, I know that Zinfandel is a Californi...

Gropius? No, he’s that Bauhaus guy. Balthus? Nope. I knew it ended in -us but I wasn’t getting to Moebius at 11pm last night Cup stacking is a thing?? I put down the only sport starting with SS I could think of: synchronized swimming. I have no idea what the individual competition for that is suppo...

Dave Leffler's response " What is Daylight Savings Time ?" is grammatically ambiguous. It is more properly Daylight Saving Time or Daylight Time . The late William Safire, who at the time wrote the NY Times column On Language , addressed this in 1986: https://www.nytimes.com/1986/04/27/magazine/on-...

Maybe the academy should just have a host-less Oscars show this year. Few people seem willing to host it, and I think the host plays a big part in why the shows are so damn long.
Maybe they should get Max Headroom to host.

Re: LL79: For the LLamas

I'd like to know how many people who got Wole Soyinka correct have been in the league long enough to remember the last time Thorsten asked about him (LL61 D20 Q2 - https://learnedleague.com/question.php?61&20&2). Q% of 11% back then, so at least he's consistently obscure. I will say the only reason...

Re: LL79: For the LLamas

Judging from my opponents’ results, I wasn’t the only person who found yesterday on the more difficult side. I don’t know which I find most galling: that I misremembered the name of the performing arts Centre, getting it wrong by one letter, or forgetting that the Venus de Milo is almost 7’ tall and...

An interesting game today with Dave getting a real challenge from Brian. I don't fault Brian for his big DD wager, but it was unfortunate for him that he couldn't pull Jack London. I was pulling for Amy since she's essentially a co-worker (albeit one unknown to me until tonight), but she was up agai...

Another good game by Dave, though comparisons to Frank S are premature IMO. His challengers did him a big favor by making way too many guesses. FJ was an instaget.

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

If you mean you've won $7K and going for $10K, have you taken into account the potential for further earnings? That might push the math more towards going for it even if you're only 25% on it. In actuality, you should be able to eliminate at least 1 wrong answer at 10K. The problem with taking that...

Yesterday's pewter question was one I recognized as something I'd previously gotten wrong, and I had two answers in mind. I was pretty sure that one was the right answer, and the other was the wrong answer I gave the last time it was asked. I didn't know which was which. I wrote tin, then changed t...

J! All-Star Fantasy League

So, as promised, you can now sign up on jeopardy.com to draft a "fantasy team" for the upcoming All-Star game in Feb. I know that there was limited enthusiasm here for that format and I suspect that there may be even less for the fantasy team concept, but that caveat aside.. I was thinking that we c...
