Re: Friday, June 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It’s interesting to read the discussion here. I briefly considered polio as an alternative to smallpox, but discarded it since there are ongoing cases elsewhere in the world. Then again, I work in the area of infectious disease. And, yeah, I hope that those people who complained about James making t...

Only 26% knew Oklahoma when given 1889 and “sooner”?
Color me shocked, but I only realized the significance of sooner after deciding on Oklahoma Land Rush, at which point the lightbulb went on.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

In my pinball heyday, when I could sink a quarter into a machine at Rooter Russell's Rendezvous in Arcata, CA, and play til dawn, while giving away free games to anyone who wandered in and wanted one, I had a definite hierarchy of companies. Gottlieb were by far the best made and most interesting p...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

In probably the biggest oops of my LL career, I read the last question as "hosts of SNL" (confusing Delaney with Mulaney and disregarding the rest) and answered Mindy Kaling  Did you note that the MCW was Bib Marley? Talk about an oops. My Kosman koin came up Tulsi Gabbard sadly, costing me t...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I thought it was cruel requiring both Mbeki AND Zuma. Very un-Thorsten-like. Funny thing: I was sure I'd be wrong on that one because I thought Zuma came immediately after Mbeki, but those were the only two I could name, so I put them down. Pleasant surprise! But yes, odd imbalance with asking only...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

Yes, yesterday felt tough to me. Only the mole and EPL questions were gimmes but I felt quite chuffed to pull Thabo Mbeke’s name from the depths of memory. Perhaps I’m fooling myself thinking that I could have come up with Holstein given enough time but no way in the 5 min I give myself. Not a chanc...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

Oh, it felt so good to dredge up the Marquis de Sade out of the back of my brain. I had been all "I know I can get this, let me stew on it" for most of the day when the "Hospital at Charendon" part faintly evoked the movie "Quills", which is about de Sade in a sanitarium (I think, I never saw that ...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I started out with Dalai as the first entry but scratched that because I knew the Panchen Lama was the second highest ranking. From there I thought “what else gets Tibetan/Nepalese names?” and also recognized a few of those names.

Re: Tuesday, June 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I promise, last post until I add another game to the Archive. An FotB (friend of the board) shared some research with me about the FJ! clue from this article: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/25/opinion/sunday/frances-wrinkle-in-time.html The French were actually on Greenwich Mean Time (now called C...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I had a very lucky guess on jewelry (started with fly-tying, then baskets before settling on a craft that actually used wire) and went with The 400 Blows because I couldn't think of another nonsensical Truffaut title. Jane Jacobs was no chance at all.

Well, Emma put to rest the one-and-done talk and avoided a sophomore slump. I expect to see her play stronger tomorrow as she becomes more comfortable with the buzzer.

Re: Monday, June 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Third (pardon my ignorance): what the hell is "Kip" Marlowe? I' know who Marlowe was, read some of his work in college, even came up with "Who was Marlowe?" for this FJ. Is "Kip" some nickname I've just never heard of? Was Marlowe, unbeknownst to us, secretly Kenyan? And what's up with including th...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

Was anyone else shocked that Tina Fey hit 50%? I still have no idea about that one. I got that one on a very lucky guess. Hairy arms? Comedian who wrote a bestseller in 2010? I decided it had to be female and started with Chelsea Handler, but decided that it was too long ago for her and went, on a ...

Re: Trivia Nationals

I'm strongly weighing it. The prospect of a walk-on J! audition for those of us who haven't had a sniff in a decade is a major inducement. Do it! As of now, I'm going solo I know of at least one other boardie who plans on being there and I have hopes that a couple other of my acquaintance may be ab...

I had to chuckle when panettone was a question yesterday. I first learned that word when it came up in the national spelling bee many years ago.
Italian Christmas bread? I answered "born-in-a mangiare".
    If that doesn't get a BWA nomination, there is no justice.

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

I think a fun way to settle it would be to have each remaining finalist contribute a word that they judge to be of extreme difficulty and then have a last round of those words.
