Re: LL79: For the LLamas

Congrats to jeff6286 on winning the Tolls 1DS! I coulda been a contender (top 15) had I not second guessed myself on Ft. Lee (that still looks NOTHING like the GW Bridge in my NSHO) and totally misjudged the difficulty of Q12. TBH, I'm still not sure how only 27% of the entrants could get the toll c...

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

I checked both Merriam-Webster and the OED, and both confirmed my thought that bimonthly can mean either twice a month OR every two months. I'm absolutely baffled that they would use that question. I agree. Whoever is editing their questions missed that peoblem. Fortunately, she chose correctly. Ni...

Great job, Naurae. I can’t wait to see the end tomorrow (and hopefully a more in-depth skullturf sighting)

Re: Friday, January 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Sg, you’re reading a lot more into that than I intended. A bet of $3,001 from Jocelyn wins in all scenarios apart from one where Anneke gets it right and makes a non-zero bet. Since the leader makes the minimum shutout bet in an overwhelming majority of games, to me that is the prudent bet from sec...

I knew that Freud (a Jew) fled Germany to escape Nazi persecution, and lived out his life in London, dying there in 1939.
Minor correction: he fled Vienna, where he’d lived and worked for several decades. He left either just before or after Kristalnacht.

And yet another overwager by second costs them the win in a TS FJ. I spent all of Think Music trying to come up with a plausible Dr, but no joy. Freud never crossed my mind, sad to say.

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Shocking end to Neville’s run. Likewise I got the $30K before the answers were revealed. What a cupcake of a $30K question! I wish we’d seen that on our appearance. For the $50K I was able to reason it out. I knew he wasn’t a DDS and was also quite sure he wasn’t a shrink. Pediatrics also didn’t co...

Allow me to celebrate my 4/4 singletons now, as I suspect I'm going to get my comeuppance on the Jane Austen question. You're welcome. Of course we'll gladly take just two points on it. P&P and S&S were out as expected sheep and I would not have gone with Emma either. The question was pick one of t...

Siobhan was a tough competitor once she got the hang of the buzzer. Champ got a bit lucky IMO that only she got what I considered to be a pretty easy FJ (hey, any TV clue I get must be easy!). Good game, overall.

Re: Reretaken Down

Even my wife, whose family is rife with Eagles fans, expressed the opinion that the game would have been better had the Eagles' 2-point attempt been ruled to have scored and then the Bears didn't miss the FG. As an aside, those who poo-poo the concept of "icing" the kicker may have to rethink that p...

In late 2018 news (didn't feel like bumping the old thread), Burundi has moved its political capital city from the easily-remembered Bujumbura to the less-stickily-named Gitega. Bujumbura remains the economic capital. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-12-24/burundi-moves-political-capita...

Also, can a grammar person (which I am not) tell me which word is the preposition from Q6 yesterday? I also thought articles were parts of speech and ruled out interjections as a basic part of speech. to Thanks, I was thinking to was a conjunction... As Lenny Bruce famously stated, to is a preposit...

Count me as another who is sad to see Jackie go. In addition to being an entertaining contestant, she also has — as I recently posted on Facebook— the best contestant interview stories ever. Got FJ tonight, largely on the strength of my recollection of Amadeus.

I am curious to know the difference between this and the Trivia Championships Of North America. I have been debating on going there every year, but always had other plans or ran into financial problems or sometimes both. Different people running it, but much of the content will be the same...and 5x...

For me, cwm is quite a memorable Welsh word because it is often cited as the lone "English" word lacking a vowel (steadfastly ignoring the role of w in Welsh). It means a small valley IIRC.

Re: LL79: For the LLamas

Glad that I was able to make the Anjou->Angevin connection that that was accepted as an alternative for Plantagenet. You and me both, Chris. I was kicking myself for overthinking the question, going from Plantagenet to Angevin because of the Anjou origin. I knew that Plantagenet was considered a ca...
