Re: Timing of Audition Invite Emails

Was choosing a preferred audition city mandatory when registering? I don't recall. There was something weird about the audition city selection this go-round, but it was there It wasn't originally. I had to go back in and make a choice. I somehow registered without a selection at first. When I logge...

I'm waiting on Cleveland as well. Have they ever just skipped an audition city before?

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Pacific), March 8, 2018

46 this time, including an amazing 31 clue run to kick things off. James Stewart was the only Hitchcock actor I could think of, although I knew they'd have mentioned Rear Window if it was him. No idea on Gaiman; I think I was trying to think of Bunker Hill but said Bull Run instead; total blank on ...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Pacific), March 8, 2018

Took for real tonight and got 44/50 (45/50 if Socratic accepted), a personal best! I was 37/50 and 35/50 taking practice tests Tues and Wed, so I thought tonight's was significantly easier. No auditions yet, so maybe this will be the year.

36 for Pacific. 40 for Eastern. 34 for Central. Of course I took Central for real. Maybe next year.

Re: What is wrong with Ken Jennings?

He makes jokes in poor taste sometimes, like all people. But he's famous, so they get noticed more. And it's on Twitter, which is designed for virulence and snark. Oh, is this the exercise where all fans of X have to line up and gatekeep their hobby because somebody was offended? Thanks, but I'd rat...

Re: May 31 2017, Adult Online Contestant Test Discussion (Central)

Yikes, 34/50 tonight for real whereas last night I got 40/50 for fun. :'( TV and kids in the background didn't help but my fault for not setting up a better test environment. I found tonight's considerably harder. Never heard of Ailey or anything he's done. Superstore could be considered fairly obsc...

Yikes - no reason not to bet more on that last daily double for a lockout.

FJ was very difficult. We had a sports nut in the house and even he didn't know what state Michael Phelps was from.

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Central), October 5, 2016

A couple of questions for the group:
- Do you expect either "rowing" or "crew" will be accepted?
- Do you expect "cymbals" or "symbols" or both will be accepted?

Assuming "yes" to these, I believe I squeaked by with a 36.

Many other commenters noting higher difficulty tonight compared to last night. Hyperbole? Maybe. It's the internet... what do you expect.

Leave it to me to choose the hardest online test of all time. Practice last night would have been ~40. Tonight probably low 30s.

Aw, no DC audition this year. Knew I should have picked another city.

I did consider identifying as female...for about 10 seconds. Wife got an audition last year but couldn't attend.

Re: Article on "The Ugly, Sexist Aftermath of Appearing on 'Jeopardy"

So because you've been able to find ONE example where an appeal to common decency resulted in mockery and an escalation of the misogynistic, disrespectful and immature behaviour, no-one should ever try to speak out against harassment ever again? There are as many examples you have time for. Anita S...

Re: Article on "The Ugly, Sexist Aftermath of Appearing on 'Jeopardy"

So if anyone is interested in whether these theories about fighting harassment through social shaming hold up in anonymous online settings, the following is an example worth considering: http://bit.ly/1ThgbF3 In 2010, an IGN thread is created about a female Jeopardy contestant's appearance. The cont...

Re: Article on "The Ugly, Sexist Aftermath of Appearing on 'Jeopardy"

You could educate yourself on issues of harassment and bullying (online or otherwise) This is all the gaming and sci fi communities have talked about for ~2 years at this point (GamerGate and Sad Puppies controversies respectively), so I'm well versed in the arguments. Its become all negativity all...

Re: Article on "The Ugly, Sexist Aftermath of Appearing on 'Jeopardy"

When you say, "there's a lot of political baggage that comes with this discussion", it makes me very frightened. I'm honestly not that into politics and don't spend a lot of time in places where politics are discussed, but the impression I get from your statements is that the "party line" for this ...

I'm extremely skeptical these sorts of discussions have the potential to stop even 1% of the problem. Maybe not. But maybe so. Or maybe .1%. Or sadly, maybe .01%. Why not make the world .01% better? EDIT: Trust me, if you knew me personally, you'd know that I'm as big of a Negative Nancy as they co...

Re: Article on "The Ugly, Sexist Aftermath of Appearing on 'Jeopardy"

By all means, explain how we can stop anonymous internet commenters being mean to people. Like what can I do, on a practical level right now, to stop even one mean comment from being posted. Be specific, and if it has even the remotest chance of stopping one harassing post, I'll do it. That's the e...
