Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

Until they ruined pinball by shortening the game from 5 balls to 3 and started jamming electronic flash at the expense of gameplay. Pretty soon, all you could find was Bally, and I never saw that free game reel roll to 99 again. And that immensely satisfying THWOK of a free game won. You could feel...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

The difficulty of the question came not only from the relative obscurity of the play, but also from the fact that you had to be able to decipher at least the gist of the German title and know enough about the play to identify it based on that context, or alternatively know that it was written by a ...

Re: Tuesday, June 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Perhaps this isn't the appropriate place for this question, but when I was at the contestant interview, the woman in charge (Maggie?) made a point of saying that Ken Jennings's record will never be broken. How could she know that? Why would she say it so boldly? What does she know that we don't kno...

the professor can do all kinds of science-y stuff on that island, but he can't fix a hole in the boat. Russell Johnson later claimed that the Professor could have gotten the castaways off the island anytime he wanted, but given that he faced little realistic competition for Mary Ann and Ginger, why...

Re: Monday, May 27, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My family had a reprint edition of the original Game of Life (looking it up, it was put out in 1970). It was very different from the 20th-century Game of Life, i.e., the one with the little plastic cars and Art Linkletter's picture on the $100,000 bill. The board was more like Chutes & Ladders witho...

Spoiler to the spoiler:
SpoilerShow
The Dodgers scored another run in the bottom of the 8th, and although Pete Alonso managed a triple in the top of the 9th, there were also three strikeouts by Kenley Jansen. Jansen gets the 5-out save; the Dodgers get the Dolly Parton win, 9-5.

I had heard of that before. I wonder how things would have progressed if the abolitionists had won. Would other states have followed their lead, particularly the border states? Would the Civil War still have happened? If it did, does it end sooner in a Union victory with Robert E. Lee leading the Y...

Re: Season 1 info

I really kind of want to read that editorial on the top of the search results, "Slicked-up 'Jeopardy' a mere shadow..." It was a Knight-Ridder syndicated review that ran in a bunch of papers -- at least seven that are on newspapers.com. This appears to be the original version, which ran in the Detr...

Only a handful of stations picked up Jeopardy at it's premiere date.
This is incorrect -- it was available in a definite majority of markets.

Never heard of the Sherman brothers.
You should see the movie also referred to in the Mary Poppins category, "Saving Mr. Banks," in which they appear as characters.

Why did Alex say "wend" instead of "wind" for that Alps clue?
Probably because that's what is said on his answer sheet.

Tyra Banks will now go by Tyra Banx for her modeling name and will be on the cover of SI for the 2019 swimsuit edition. As with so many magazines these days, there are actually multiple versions with different covers (three, to be exact) -- my subscription copy has someone else on the cover (Camill...

Jeopardy! sensation James Holzhauer is a winning hand for Las Vegas The hook to this article is that James was given the "key to the Strip" last week. A couple of other items of note: * The claim is that he's "spreading his winnings around town," with some charitable contributions -- but does this ...

I have said this before, but they should give players a free hotel room while they are taping. They could work out a sponsorship deal with a hotel with some sort of on air mention like "Contestants on Jeopardy stay at...". And also provide a shuttle to and from the studio. I think they pick you up ...

I tried out for a U.S. version of "Pointless" about a year and a half ago, supposedly being produced for Game Show Network. I don't know what happened to it.

Fred Worth may have been correct with the 48, but the show's title was just "Howdy Doody," not "Howdy Doody Time."
