Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

School of Rock has been my best-ever ML performance: 10-0-1 record and 52 TCAs. (I also had a 10-0-1 record in 20th Century Women last year, but only had 48 TCAs there.)

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

During the second half of the 1966-1967 prime-time television season, two shows -- one on NBC, the other on CBS, and coincidentally airing on the same nights, although not against each other -- featured regular nerdy guys, played by William Daniels and Stephen Strimpell, who could acquire superhero...

Re: Monday, February 5, 2001 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This originally aired the second week I owned a DVR (I saw a TiVo in action at a Super Bowl party on January 28, 2001, and bought one at Best Buy the next day).

Re: Monday, October 26, 1992 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

When Donna Mills was talking about her made-for-TV-movie about a President who has a secret love child with a member of the press (?), they chose that moment to put up a graphic stating that the episode aired on October 26, 1992. Was that to let viewers know that this was before Bill Clinton became...

Re: Monday, October 26, 1992 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was puzzling over why Donna Mills's movie would have aired on Tuesday in most of the country, but on Monday in Los Angeles and Seattle... but then I realized, no, it was this episode of "Jeopardy!" that aired on Monday in most of the country, but on Tuesday in Los Angeles and Seattle, pushed back ...

Re: Looks Like Jeopardy! Has Resumed Production

I'm sure they have one designed, and maybe even built and in storage for when the time comes. I seriously doubt they would have spent the money to design and construct, and would also be spending money on an ongoing basis to store, a new set that wouldn't be used until some indeterminate future tim...

Re: Regis Philbin Has Passed Away

He also hosted a short-lived game show in the 1970s called The Neighbors. Don't ask me what it's about. To be very simplistic, it was like "The Newlywed Game" combined with "Tattletales," but for neighbors. First part of an episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P57ll6e9dsI Second part of an epis...

Re: Reretaken Down

Apparently this was a Dodgers thing: https://www.mlb.com/dodgers/fans/cutouts The Rays are also doing it, for less than the Dodgers ($40 for season ticket holders, $60 for others): https://www.mlb.com/rays/fans/cut-outs However, they didn't have any set up in Tropicana Field for their first game of...

Re: Monday, January 15, 1990 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Jeopardy in its syndicated form conformed to the standards and practices of one of the major networks. I believe in the early days of Jeopardy it was ABC , because in those early years Jeopardy aired on several of the ABC owned and operated stations. I think I read that in the book Alex wrote about...

Re: Pace of Gameplay in Season 1

The audience reacting after every response certainly didn't help the pace (because the contestants would tend not to call for the next clue until the sound died down).

Re: Tuesday, September 11, 1984 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm fairly certain that I did not see this when they originally aired. I would have been up in Great Lakes at the Navy base and several of my classes were at night. Night classes shouldn't have been an issue -- I believe J! has always been scheduled to air in the afternoon in Chicago. (Obviously, t...

Anyone notice Inventions for $300 doesn't really have a "this" that it's asking for?

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

That's a great map. I don't think I realized Venice was part of L.A. And I definitely didn't know that San Pedro and Wilmington were! I've been to the Venice branch of the Los Angeles (city) Public Library. I have not been to the San Pedro or Wilmington branches, which are the two farthest from whe...

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

I spent way too much time trying to decide if Los Angeles is coastal. I guess the part around the airport is. Here's a map of City of Los Angeles neighborhoods for reference. Only four are on the Pacific coast: Pacific Palisades, Venice, Playa Del Rey, and San Pedro. (Other coastal areas shown on t...

Re: Happy Birthday to J!Board

It's still going on, I think. I haven't checked in for over a year. Nick Spalding died. Peter Boulding died. Paul Madarasz and Blinky the Shark too, but maybe that was far enough back that you were around for it. Meanwhile, Boron Elgar pinged me on LearnedLeague after I signed up there (as "Ellwang...

Re: Happy Birthday to J!Board

Looking into this I see that I came here after a 10 August 2011 discussion I started on alt.fan.cecil-adams regarding a quibble I had over a Jeopardy! clue. I'm not sure if I'd caught it on a rerun or while browsing the archive for some reason. But a boardie over there named Jim Ellwanger suggested...

Re: Reretaken Down

I did not dare bump any of the Trebek threads to avoid scaring anyone, but Bergeron seemed to have as many dislikes as likes as a potential J! host. He'd be a good host of J! (or pretty much anything), but he's 65, and I have a feeling they'll be looking for someone younger as an Alex replacement.

This is even more out of date than Linear Gnome's joke (because A&P has been out of business since 2015).

Re: Poll on Boardies Covid-19 Impact

I got really lucky and, after about eight months of unemployment, started a new job on the first Monday in January (as an editor of online/email marketing content). The company went to work-from-home mode as of Friday, March 13. Someone I know from another message board was in the hospital with Covi...
