Re: Couple questions about two 80s clues

Creator of “Beetle Bailey”, whose name was defined in “B.C.” as “a dead nightcrawler” The answer is Mort Walker, but I could not find any reference in B.C. cartoons that refer to Mort Walker as a "dead nightcrawler", and I can't identify why Johnny Hart, who wrote the B.C. cartoons, would have some...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

When I was growing up, one set of my grandparents lived near Iowa City, and when we would visit them, there were sometimes "threats" that we would take a day trip to the Amana colonies. Or the Herbert Hoover presidential library. I don't remember actually going to either one.

A crime thriller involving a group of authors taking place during a hurricane? That seems more like Dave Barry novel territory.

Have your PVR record every weekday at the time Jeopardy is on. On the West Coast, where the show is not always on at the same time, this would require a lot more "babysitting" than the unusual situation that caused today's episode to not automatically record. That situation is that many DVRs though...

The show taped at CBS studios in Studio City, California (north of LA)... Studio City is a neighborhood of the city of L.A. I went through the same audition process, and was set for the same Thursday, February 6 tape date as you... but on February 3, an acquaintance who sometimes works as a game sh...

A Keystone has 28 players, so there will be 2 of them I don't face.
Interesting -- A Lyceum also has 28 players. (Of the two people I don't play, one has beaten me twice, and the other has lost to me once, so I guess it's a wash.)

The question about "one of Thurber's finest illustrators" I didn't get in either sense; didn't he do his own illustrating? I suppose it was after his blindness had advanced some. Correct, Marc Simont -- specifically selected by Thurber after he was too blind to draw -- illustrated the first edition...

I'm on U-verse, they still have this week's episodes listed as Teachers Tournament so they've all been recorded.
Weird that they're not getting the same program listings as their corporate sibling DirecTV (which has the "Greatest of All Time" listings).

Seriously, though, what are your thoughts on why the captions are inaccurate? No quality control or bonus for accuracy? Pushing captioners to meet a quota so they don't have time to rewind and listen carefully? Captioners with substandard education or hearing? All of the above, probably. What they ...

I've lived in San Diego, went to Padres games, I know the real name of the San Diego Chicken, and I still answered "Swinging Friar". If it's any consolation, The Famous Chicken was never an official Padres mascot (he represented KGB radio until they dropped him and he went out as a free agent) -- s...

Wonder how I could get in touch with her, I could give her a Learned League referral... Just for the record, she wouldn't be eligible, due to LL rule 18.3: Any person who has received any sanction for dishonest play in any other organized competition (online trivia or otherwise) or has otherwise be...

Here is the closed captioning for Jesse's Laos response:
This kind of thing is why, after 7-plus years working as a closed-captioner, I never watch shows with the captions on anymore. If I wind up losing my hearing, I'll probably just give up TV.

arinholtz is a D/E rundler, so he made a wise choice in that regard.
Although he finished third in his D rundle in LL84, so he's set for a promotion to C for LL85.

At an airport with a control tower, taxiing on a runway requires an explicit clearance to do so (e.g. if given a clearance to taxi without a route specified, the route is at pilot discretion but that discretion does not include taxiing on a runway). I pictured the action of taxiing to get to the sp...

Back when I was a closed-captioner, my rule was always that I'd caption it as "think" unless I very clearly heard the "G" in "thing."

(Unfortunately, I did hear the "G" fairly often.)

The only actual mention of Maggie's retirement I can find in the media -- the supposed subject of this thread being mentions of J! in the media -- is an article in The Sun. I've heard of Rick Riordan but can never remember his name -- even though he has the same name as the man who was mayor of Los Angeles when I moved here in 1999. (Although the mayor goes by Richard.)
