Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I managed to totally misread the Harrison Ford question. I thought it was asking about multiple roles in the same movie , didn't read the names, saw "President" and instinctively answered Peter Sellers. Fortunately, I was given a zero on that one and eked out the win. Not getting President James Ma...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I overthought the literature question, and ended up writing Eudora Welty instead of Katherine Anne Porter. That mistake cost me 1 point, but not the match, as I lost by by 2. My opponent nailed the South Africa question for 3 points, giving him the win.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

Oh, it felt so good to dredge up the Marquis de Sade out of the back of my brain. I had been all "I know I can get this, let me stew on it" for most of the day when the "Hospital at Charendon" part faintly evoked the movie "Quills", which is about de Sade in a sanitarium (I think, I never saw that ...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I was surprised by the low get rate for "St. Louis Blues". W.C. Handy and "blues" deserves to be a Pavlov, and the Blues hockey team is in this year's Stanley Cup finals. For me, poutine fell into the category of "what else could it be?" I first saw it on a menu about 20 years ago in a Toronto bar. ...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Central), April 10, 2019

Got 42/50 on video. I agree with those who thought it was somewhat tougher than average. Missed the following (spoilerized): Kendrick Lamar. Brain freeze, I answered Jay-Z. Don Giovanni. I answered Barber of Seville. Argentina. My mental map was off; I answered Brazil. Yahoo! I answered Google. Amos...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Eastern), April 9, 2019

Got 45. Missed 11,17,23,26 (RTFQ) and 50. I hope the other two are this easy. “Easy.” Now you’re just trolling :P Sorry. I did feel a tad self-conscious writing that, but it did feel easier to me than most: only 2 pop culture questions and a lot of what I’d call standard trivia fare. I thought ther...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Eastern), April 9, 2019

I think I had 44/50. Wrong answers spoilerized: "Halogen" and "extremities" came to me an instant after time ran out. Drew a blank on "Billions", "orchid", and "green-eyed monster". Knew the video game was "Red (something)" but all I could think of was "Red"; this game recently came up in Learned Le...

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

I also started with "magazine" and switched to "almanac." Cost me a 9(6) but I managed a 9(5) and a win. I now have a winning record in A (!) and the second-best defense in all of Horizon... second only to the player who leads all 12,000+ LLamas. Same here, because I bit on the "al-" beginning of t...

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

I went with Mercator because, who else could it be? But then I started thinking about the fact that there are a ton of other map styles, but stuck with it anyway. XKCD has two great comics on the Mercator projection, the second of which got me wavering on Mercator. Here they are: ( https://xkcd.com...

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

The MD 10 head scratcher for me was that only 18% got Nellie Melba (which I thought was a trivia staple), but 56% came up with either nasty, brutish or short (which was a quote I was completely unfamiliar with). Luckily I was playing FrankJ and that was the single question we both missed. I'll take...

standard...the people on this show know heaps of stuff except for math and strategy And sports. And movies/Oscars. Ironically, people seem to do fairly well with the “dreaded” Opera category. Or at least that’s my perception. I'd say movies and Oscars are 2 different things. You're only going to ex...

Re: Tuesday, January 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

When my wife and I were in Stockholm, we visited Skansen. Our first stop there--and I insisted on this--was the enclosure where the wolverine lived (hey, I'm from Michigan and went to U-M). I also remember stepping inside the Seglora Church and seeing a sod-roofed house. Also a glass-blowing exhibi...

Someone's gotta post it, so it may as well be me.... A new record for the most-liked photo on Instagram has just been set by a picture of an egg. Just a plain brown egg. As of this post, it has over 43.5 million likes, easily more than doubling the previous record of 18+ million. https://www.nytime...

Re: Friday, January 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This clue was one of two this week where semantics tripped me up. "Doctor" had me thinking physician, not psychiatrist, so my brain was turning up no results for a "famous doctor" in that time frame. After the music ended, the only WAG I had was Albert Schweitzer, but I knew the other details of th...

[rant]OK, if you enter a rock and roll mini league you should know Alan Freed is the person credited with coming up with the term.[/rant] I was just slightly surprised only 39% got that question right yesterday. Also it had the day's second highest defensive assignment with 1.8. I visited the Rock ...

Re: Thursday, January 10, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

We saw a production of "The Mousetrap" in Toronto, so that was an instaget. I recently read about Jose Marti, who lived in the second half of the 19th century. He was a both a poet--probably best known for "Guantanamera"--and a Cuban revolutionary. Marti spent the last 15 years of his life in New Yo...
