Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

Group 44 here. Of course, I drew somebody I know on MD1, who just finished #2 in his A rundle, behind only you-know-who. So, I'm just going to take my beating and try to do better tomorrow.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

And there's a good chance it'll never come to making that particular connection again. You can't really plan or prepare in advance for making specific mental connections. You just have to know a lot of stuff, and have a brain that's good at working out from the clue what particular connection you n...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

Notable notes: Two JBL'ers are moving up from E to D - Bamaman got first in (redacted for dox reasons), and twelvefootbro got 5th in Taiga. twelvefootsis2 just missed promotion one notch behind in 6th. Ecological balance is restored as two JBL'ers moved down a notch. I am trading places with twelve...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I found this season much tougher than last as I got 92 correct in my rookie season but 82 in this one. I saw the image of Ivanka Trump holding up a can of Goya beans but I'd never heard of them before that. I guessed Old El Paso but didn't expect to be right. I didn't know Goya was a large brand. I...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I'm looking forward to joining y'all next season. It's been a really good rookie campaign, although based on what I'm hearing, I happened to luck into one of the easiest seasons in recent memory. I'll be playing in a B rundle next time around (anybody else here in Fjord?), so I may not be this sangu...

That FJ! question looks familiar...although 33% seems like a low get rate. I'm curious to see how it polls next week.

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I really thought Stan would play harder than it did. Between people not familiar with Eminem, and people not familiar with the particular part of the culture that uses the word 'stan' (noun or verb), that number really surprised me.

Re: Friday, December 11, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Kendra in second was in position to win on a TS clue, while ignoring Kate and only betting to stay $100 above Nizar's possible 3600 was the TPIR game, "That's Too Much!" I'm not a wagering pro. What should she have bet? $2,801 (win on TS with 'standard' wagers, but can also beat a $0 bet from the l...

I got two points for the Waldheim question. Also, I really overthought the irrational number question and thought that is was transcendental numbers specifically.
It's a good thing the first name wasn't required.

Re: Thursday, December 10, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Lefty guitarist from Seattle is a TS at $200? I said Jimi, but did so hesitantly because I thought they were looking for a group due to the category. That may have thrown the contestants off as well. I was hoping for a straight-up category on rock supergroups. But I had trouble pre-calling any othe...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

Butt rose, butt rose. Golly! Frustratingly, I couldn't remember Bob's full mnemonic, and so had to rack my brain for the correct answer. I had only "ooh, taunt," taunting me. While his EM Forster visual is very helpful for me, I found that UN mnemonic to be more work than just remembering the names...

I didn't realize Lawrence Welk was colorized, because we didn't have a color TV until later. Watched it with my parents every week. I ended up giving my opponent 2 for Barefoot Contessa, the only question they got correct. SMDH. In defense of my...defense, their food and tv/pop culture stuff was pre...

Anyone else think this has been a particularly easy season? Unless the questions get dramatically harder, I'm on pace to break my all-time TCA by 7 points. It would be a definite outlier.

+1 on translator

I've never seen or read any version of Les Mis, but when I think of the character names, I picture the actors from the 2012 film version, so I checked that.

It looks like I was far from alone in failing to RTFQ for ARPANET. I was literally talking to myself about how DARPA created ARPANET, and worrying about spelling DARPA right. I always want to add a silent 'k'.

I'll admit to being surprised that bowling had the lowest get rate for the day.
If we get hit with a similar question re cricket, or rugby (or...), I'm in big trouble.
