Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21
Another requirement for bourbon is that the barrel may be used just once. A brewery owner in West Michigan showed me the room where his high-end beers were barrel-aged. Was it Founders? Is so the brewer may be a friend of mine. It was New Holland, and the beer in question is its flagship product, D...

Re: Fun with ABC's "The Chase" [Spoilers]
I'm glad Kristin got a good haul, but I really didn't like this version. I didn't like the host at all, the kibbitzing from backstage was ridiculous, Ken (God bless 'em) just ain't The Beast for trash talk (The Professor? Say huh?!? And if that's his nickname, I can only imagine what they can come ...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020
Congrats! Two bad moneys (one ridiculous guess on colt 45 that I moneyed for no good reason) and I'm in 348th place, with little chance of making the cut. I got 8 right, so I'm fine with my performance. I completely understand the temptation to money one of those "uncertain" questions. You figure i...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020
I could not be more thrilled to be in 136th place after the round one reveal. I came very close to maximizing the points I could get with the nine that I answered correctly.
It's going to be a hard fall for me in round two. I would love to still be above the cut line but it's going to be iffy.

Best of retro-active luck to all who are in the Learned League championship. Results will be posted next week (https://learnedleague.com/championship.php?2020 ) It looks like there are MANY current/occasional/former boardies in the qualifier list (https://learnedleague.com/thorsten/champqualifiers....

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread
A hearty congratulations to Boson for his MagA victory, his first ever! Thanks! I made my learned league flag into a car window mounted thing, and I'm driving across town honking my horn. Congrats to the other jboardies who qualified for the championship! It's just nuts that I hung on to finish thi...

I'd say that most of that 50% couldn't name any other "Great" lakes and decided that some answer is better than no answer. This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Wed Jun 24, 2020 9:52 amI was floored that 50% thought the Great Salt Lake is larger than Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

I work in the control room of a commercial nuclear power plant. It's been very interesting recently. In addition to the sending non-essential employees home, we have also restricted access to the control room to only those with a critical business need, we are using nitrile gloves when operating com...

Re: Learned League 84
38% knew how to convert decimal to hexadecimal? Really ? That might've been the longest I've ever spent on a question. I got it right (and guessed the right answer first) but yikes. I could probably have nuked out the hexadecimal conversion if I had to, but instead I used this thought process: It's...

Today I Learned: the game "Cootie" isn't anywhere near as universally known as I thought. To be fair, I knew exactly which game the question was about, but couldn't remember the title. It took me a good couple hours of thinking about it to remember the name. I got stuck on centipede or millipede fo...

Agree, I think everything except Grand Rapids was pretty tough. Jackson should have been the $2000 and the other two omitted.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2020 1:23 pmI honestly thought the category was very tough for non-Michiganders. Interlochen in particular seemed obscure even for the bottom box.

As a lifelong resident of the Great Lakes State, I would have to forfeit my Michigan Card if I hadn't ran the category. And I'm slightly annoyed that there was no love for the U.P.

An average get rate for the day of 34.8% is quite low. I haven't been tracking those, but it was definitely one of the harder days this season. ETA: I found where you can see each day's get rate. 35% is the lowest. Monday's was 38%, which is the second lowest. Tough week so far. Is it just me, or w...

How do you spell the one where you agonize trying to decide between Elton John and Billy Joel, only to discover that the answer is Stevie Wonder? I would have had no chance on that one except that it came up at my pub quiz a couple of years ago as a final question, and it cost us the game. I always...

And I've stared at the Degas statue in question at the Art Institute of Chicago enough that, after I convinced myself that Rodin could not possibly be the answer (his Burghers of Calais was a commissioned artwork, after all), I managed to come around to the correct answer. Rodin was my only other t...

Always happy when I am one of the five that posts a score for my particular Rundle. Even more impressive for me personally was that my score was used in an A Rundle for the first time ever. Of course, Horizon had experienced quite the exodus of it's former elite players. I think we were a top 5 leag...

I have had the Mercury Seven memorized ever since the Jeopardy Ultimate ToC final game. Wow, that's been fourteen years now.
