Re: LL83: Learned League

How do you spell the one where you agonize trying to decide between Elton John and Billy Joel, only to discover that the answer is Stevie Wonder? I would have had no chance on that one except that it came up at my pub quiz a couple of years ago as a final question, and it cost us the game. I always...

(Plus,I have some quiet grumbling suspicion of our two-time rundle winner. I don't believe the stats.)
Yes, it looks pretty fishy. She must have spent those three forfeit days studying super-duper-hard to improve so much in one season...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

And I've stared at the Degas statue in question at the Art Institute of Chicago enough that, after I convinced myself that Rodin could not possibly be the answer (his Burghers of Calais was a commissioned artwork, after all), I managed to come around to the correct answer. Rodin was my only other t...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

Always happy when I am one of the five that posts a score for my particular Rundle. Even more impressive for me personally was that my score was used in an A Rundle for the first time ever. Of course, Horizon had experienced quite the exodus of it's former elite players. I think we were a top 5 leag...

Only 35% recognize the Mercury Seven? I'm flabbergasted.
I almost missed it because I immediately went "Astronauts = Moon = Luna!" Then I read it again...

I have had the Mercury Seven memorized ever since the Jeopardy Ultimate ToC final game. Wow, that's been fourteen years now.

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

I have to constantly remind myself that "puzzler" clues should be overweighted for defense, no matter how quickly I myself solve the "puzzle". My poor defense cost me a tie or possibly a win against BigDaddyMatty yesterday.

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

I'm curious about people who got Fill or Kill. Did you just guess? Did you know it? I consider myself very well versed in finance and I don't think I have ever heard that phrase before (but I don't deal with trading admittedly). Back when I was much more actively trading stocks in my Roth IRA, I re...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

Cyndi you do an amazing job of maintaining the list of Boardies every season. Thank you for all of that effort. I appreciate it. I have received a surprise promotion to Horizon A this season. I had every expectation of finishing 7th in Horizon B for the fourth straight season. I am a bit optimistic ...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I"m glad I stuck with "pentagon" after missing with it last week. I generally treat LL (in my rookie season), as just an extended Final Jeopardy time limit for each question. I don't intend to ponder all day on my submission, so, 5 minutes or so tops to make my guess and assign defense. But I was a...

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

Is it too early to create a private league for LL81? I'd do it myself if I were a Commissioner's Circle member.

Thank you for such an informative post about your experience. It was a pleasure to see you perform so well. If you were nervous it certainly did not show.

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

Finally got my first win of the season, 4(2)-0(0). Movies and TV aren't my strong suit, but being a '90s kid I definitely knew My So-Called Life and even watched some episodes when it first appeared on Netflix. And Seven Year Itch didn't sound like a medical condition, but I had nothing better. I n...

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

I'm back for another season in my comfort zone, Horizon B. Good luck to all boardies! I have already submitted Match Day 1, as Wednesday will be incredibly busy for me. Last season I strategically used my alloted ten days of advanced access on days when I knew I would have very little time to ponder...

Re: LL79: For the LLamas

I got bit yesterday by making assumptions based on the sex of my opponent. I assigned the beer question 3 and paisley 0. She got wort and missed paisley and I ended up with a 9(6)-9(5) tie and spoiling my first six-pack of the season. :( I was baffled that anyone would not put the 0 on Annie, yet s...

Re: LL79: For the LLamas

I did well on the midseason one day and came in 51st with 450 points. I only missed the video game question. I had Lebanon down first, too, until rereading it and "civilian" jumped out at me. I was happy to help Team Horizon by being the top finisher in the B Rundle. I seriously considered moneying...

Re: LL79: For the LLamas

My opponents (public and private) mistakenly thought that my Canadian location meant that I would not whiff the Canadian geography question. Unfortunately, those 0 assignments still didn't help me win either match. It seems I had the honor of facing the family member who did not whiff on the Canadi...

I might be on my way to making weird LL history. After eight matches, my record is 1 win, 1 loss, and 6 ties--including a 9(6)-9(6) tie.
I'm just the opposite. I have an active streak of 45 consecutive matches without a tie.

Accepting "qi" has got to be one of the worst calls I've seen.
Agree. There was no ambiguity in that question. I know it's difficult to consistently and fairly score every question singlehandedly for thousands of participants, but that ruling was a stinker,

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

Ohio State used to be in the CCHA with Lake Superior St. and Michigan Tech. I'm glad that there were enough people who knew about these two colleges to keep it from being in the single digits. Michigan alum here. The Wolverines also used to be in the CCHA. And the annual Great Lakes Invitational ho...
