Re: Wednesday, May 31, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

It seemed to me that the distortion clue was overly broad. It seemed like they were looking for a word specifically for a particular type of distortion, rather than the general category.

Rand is a math teacher. OF COURSE HE IS GOING TO MAKE THE OPTIMIZING BET. Not all math teachers are good at strategy. AT LEAST COVER THE 1ST PLACE PLAYER OR THE ONE BEHIND/AHEAD OF YOU IF YOU KNOW THE RESPONSE! You are aware that players bet after seeing the category but before they see the questio...

Would "fugue" work instead of "psychotic"? I wasn't looking at the screen when the FJ clue was read, and I think that helped, since I wasn't hung up on the spelling. And I knew that the largest city in India is Mumbai, so that narrowed it down. How did I get to Karachi but not know where Karachi is?...

What does "NHO" stand for? Yes, I suppose on purely word-association grounds, words like "astronomy" or "astronomical" suggest Halley more than they suggest Newton. But Newton's name is associated with astronomy as well (he studied the motion of comets and designed telescopes) and I also knew that N...

A rare pronunciation mistake by Alex, as he said Mark "Anthony" instead of Mark Antony. And vacillated on "pastoral". Harriet Tubman was instant for me as "The Moses of her People" clicked to lock in the Bible reference. When Alex said there were a few choices I was confused as to who else until I ...

Pre-called there'd be an Ohio city in "c"ities category.

"Polygamy" for "polyandry" gets a BMS, but "Sunday" for "Easter" doesn't? "Sunday" was, technically, a correct response.

From the link: "The two types of ionizing radiation are particulate (alpha, beta, neutrons) and electromagnetic (x-rays, gamma rays) radiation." EM is overly specific. I guess technically OSHA warns against EM ionizing radiation, but that's misleading phrasing.

The clue writers messed up on the ionizing/non-ionizing question; it should have been just "radiation", not "electromagnetic radiation".

They said "Brand". Sounded pretty clear to me. General Mills = Company Wheaties = Brand if they made Frosted Wheaties = product "A brand (or marque for car model) is a name, term, design, symbol or other feature that distinguishes one seller's product from those of others." https://en.wikipedia.org...

Something else that's weird is that it seems like usually when the writers are expecting one answer, and they get a different one, Alex mentions the main answer. Here, he didn't register any surprise at all at the "greatest common denominator" response. Was that the response on the card? Can other c...

I guess there's two types of people in the world: those who are familiar with George Boole, and those who aren't.

Mitch must've thought the responses had to be 1,2, or 4, rather than it being a "clue or response" category.

Okay, holy shit. Alex giving away the berkelium DD with the little factoid after californium is a new low. I would be livid if I were Sarah or Hannah. I think the writers deserve some of the blame, writing a DD clue so similar to the previous one. "Here's an element that was discovered out West!" "...
