Re: Pet Intellectual Peeves

With the NFL season starting I thought I'd mention a time some of my buddies were making predictions as to which two teams would be in the next Super Bowl. One of the predictions was for a Cowboys-Packers Super Bowl, while another one predicted Patriots-Steelers.

Re: Mike Richards to Replace Harry Friedman

I'd expect more impossible FJ! clues if budget is going to be an issue like it was in Drew Carey's early seasons of The Price is Right. If it does happen, I hope things would improve after a season or so. Price appears to have improved. Additionally, if budget does turn out to be an issue, why edit...

Re: Harry Friedman stepping down after Season 36

As for changes (or revivals), how about bringing back the Senior Tournament? Unlike the Teachers, there IS a reason for giving older people their own tournament. If ratings are a concern, then do like they did and have it on over the holidays and/or summer (with the baby boomers now in that demograp...

I was surprised to be reminded how soon after the M$M the BotD was held (less than three years).
I think you mean the UToC (2005) and not the BotD (2014).

Re: Season 36 Changes & Predictions

I think there'll be a new rule that players have to go in order down the columns. They can switch columns when they gain control, but they have to start at the top at the lowest value and work their way down. Eliminates people copying James H's strategy and the "Forrest Bounce" so vociferously disl...

4. The clue board will finally adopt proper English Style with commas and periods inside quotation marks. English style is outside. The long-term trend appears to be moving towards "outside" style (since it eliminates ambiguity in technical contexts, etc.). Wikipedia uses "English" style despite be...

Re: Rule Change Effective 4/29/19 - No More FJ! Shout-Outs

I heard about this change here . Apparently, now any FJ! shout-outs will be treated as additional information to the response and will render it as incorrect (even if without the shout-out it'd be right). There has been no citation to prove the second sentence. In fact, your cited source literally ...

In the summer of 2004 were there reruns of Ken Jennings games?
2004, no. 2005, yes (one week, including his first and last shows as well as when he set the then-record of $75,000). All IIRC.

Re: Thursday, March 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This is also one of those situations where the wagering would be different pre tie-breaker. The wagering calculator does not reflect this. The main thing different is that Steven has a choice whether to risk a tie on both ends or bet to cover Kenji by a dollar which would also result in losing to S...

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

Matt risked his shut-out on the last clue of the game, a miss which gave away his runaway game. Fortunately for him it was not a $20,000 mistake, as all three players solved FJ. It wasn't bad strategy for Matt to attempt that last clue, since if he clamed Linda could've ringed in and put herself in...

Re: $0 FJ Wager Poll

Please describe a scenario where the only chance of winning is by making a $0 wager. You have $1 going into FJ!. That still doesn’t make a $0 wager the only chance of winning. You could bet that $1 and get the answer correct while your opponents bet everything and get it wrong. I didn't think of th...

Re: RIP Teacher's Tournament Winner Larry Martin

What an awful way to start a Saturday seeing the such sad news. I posted this earlier this week in looking at how the TOC field was shaping up: To get in [name/gender redacted] might need something that has opened spots in the past such as someone: passing facing legal trouble scheduling conflict m...

Re: What if they changed the tournament format so that the last-place finisher in the first day of the finals is elimina

This idea has been tried in another way previously. On the 1978-79 Art Fleming revival, at the end of the J! round the third-place player was eliminated and the DJ! round had only two players. At the end of the second round the second-place player was eliminated with the winner playing the "Super Je...

There's also Eric Newhouse's Clavin in the Teen Reunion preliminaries, but given the tournament format the move was justifiable (and paid off).

Here's another Clavin from a celebrity. (Both Jon Stewart and Eric Newhouse happen to have "round" contestant numbers in the J! Archive.)

Re: Should the Teen Tournament Winner Get a TOC Invite?

My suggestion that I made on The Final Wager when this was a subject there is invite the Teen Tournament winners, but not until the first ToC taped after turning 18. (I voted "yes" in the poll since my compromise wasn't an option.)
