Laura was in an interesting position here, potentially being a spoiler to Nate if she stole enough answers.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

The clue said it won an Oscar . That was huge newsl, never before has a superhero movie been considered highbrow enough to stand a chance. Oscar + superhero = Black Panther trumps the "claws" equation by a mile. Then why put "Claws" in the clue, other than to serve as a red herring the size of Mont...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

and for future reference...queensberry rules=boxing...retain it The last hit I got was from 2006. I shouldn't have to dig that deep for something supposedly Pavlovian. Did you search QueensBURY or QueensBERRY? Bury is the intuitive spelling, but Berry is correct. Marvel + claws = Wolverine, right? ...

I raise an objection to the "Extras" question. David Bowie made up a song about Ricky Gervais' character Andy Millman, not Gervais himself.

Re: Monday, May 6, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Not that I have a horse in this race, but damn - if I was up to $20K in a QF tournament game I would choose carefully which clues I am ringing in on the rest of the round. No more DDs, so while it is possible that someone can get within 50%, nobody is going to overtake you. At first, I wondered why...

Re: Monday, May 6, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Did the teachers get to witness any of James' games? Be curious to see if any of them try to imitate him. What was the logic behind Julia's wager? I would've thought the optimal strategy to be putting herself at $16,001.

Should there be a shoutouts box in FJ?

With the rule change about no more shoutouts, I was thinking that a solution might be to have a shoutouts box on the FJ writing screen, a designated area of the “paper” where anything written in there doesn’t count as part of your guess. I wanted to see if people thought that was clever or asinine, ...

Re: Rule Change Effective 4/29/19 - No More FJ! Shout-Outs

I had always planned, if I ever got on the show and the FJ answer seemed to be "Bette Davis", that I would write her last name at the bottom in the shape of a smile, or at least with a sort of symmetry that would suggest lips, while the B in "Bette" would be her right ear and the ? would be her lef...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

You just want to throw away the right answer because you "might" get it wrong? I swear, I just don't understand your mindset. In most trivia games, if I don't know the answer, I just throw something out there and hope it sticks. And if it doesn't, I learn something new. Are you just scared of liter...

Re: Thursday, April 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

James has been very lucky on DD finding, and has had less board monopolization than last week. His buzzer speed this week wasn’t as good as last week , and I think there will come a game where he doesn’t get any of the DDs, comes into FJ behind, and gets it right but loses because the person in the...

Re: Thursday, April 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Alix probably wins some games if she was going up against the typical Jeopardy field. And she hit the right category for the first DD in DJ but didn’t choose the right square. Not that it ultimately would have won her the game or anything, but that is the luck that allows James to accumulate his bi...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Those are pretty poor guesses for the question at hand, given they're not actually a queen, fictional, and male. I'll bite on your numerical assertion, how many current female real-life queens can you name? This article lists 13 who are currently reigning (as of February). Absent the Corgi knowledg...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Again, unless you know every. single. detail about British royalty, it might as well be ANY of the dozen or so queens currently reigning. It could be Queen Latifah. It could be Queen Amidala. It could be Brian May. Those are pretty poor guesses for the question at hand, given they're not actually a...

So that clue about having 30 corgis... what tipoff did I miss that pinned that to QE2? The clue was written in the present-perfect tense, implying the person is still alive. The current Queen of England is Queen Elizabeth II. YOK (You Oughta Know) the names of current monarchs, and that corgis are ...

Re: So...what have we learned so far from James Holzhauer?

We've seen people bounce around, but have we ever seen anyone start at the very bottom and work their way up? I recall Arthur and some others tried to get the DDs right away by starting at the middle and 4th rows.
