Re: Friday, January 17, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I had a hunch Veronica wouldn't survive past the end of the week. Each game she played, her championship standing seemed more the result of quick buzzer reflex + soft competition, rather than depth of knowledge. Dennis makes a minor chassis adjustment and whistles right past her. Lindsay could have ...

Re: Thursday, January 16, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Calling on the Penguin to post a fourth podium survey for this game. She was very close to having a Kristin Sausville solo today as Shanu needed his +3600 on the last two clues of the DJ! round to be standing for the FJ! round. I was rooting for that to happen. I can't recall if anyone else has had ...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

I got Argentina because it was long from north to south and too wide to be Chile. How did you know it was even South America? That just looked like a jagged lump that could be any country in South America, Asia, Europe, or Africa. Argentina, Chile and Brazil are big enough to span the continental U...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 2 (1/8/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

(1)Happy I got a triple stumper. Unfortunately, I can't recall what it was... (2)Leibniz was awfully easy for 2000 in this setting, I thought. (1) My one triple stumper get was "What is Tulsa" And I didn't need the two misses to narrow it down. :ugeek: (2) There was another bottom row answer I thou...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 1 (1/7/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It was evident during both games that Ken and Brad knew that they had to adjust their DD wagering to match James' style, if they were going to keep up. They also managed to keep the DDs away from James. That was Ken's ticket to taking the first match. Interesting that Ken reverted to his old ways wh...

Re: Monday, January 6, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Gotta love her, but Karen is giving conservatism a bad name with these FJ wagers. It's odd to make that point in a game thread where her max safe bet would have been 599. I mentioned it the other day, and this one is of a piece with her other wagers. Someone mentioned one of the other famous contes...

Re: Thursday, January 2, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

For anyone NHOIng...the songs I can't help you with, but cognates are there for a few words. Cocodrilo = crocodile, amarillo = yellow (like the Texas town), Sabado = Saturday (like iSabado Gigante!), and Corazon = heart. Candle in the Wind was tough - I just had "blank-ity in the blank", which was ...

Re: Thursday, January 2, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Somehow I ran Elton Juan despite my limited Spanish. I thought it would be a fun category until I started seeing the clues. The only one I identified before they called it was Goodbye Yellowbrick Road. A category like that is a buzzer race for anyone who has more than a couple years of Span...

Re: Wednesday, January 1, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It seems pretty rare that the pre-FJ scores dictate second place needs to go banzai. Even rarer when the contestant in question knows enough to do it.
Kudos to Val for having wagering smarts.

Re: Tuesday, December 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Robin did 11600-3801 going for 15401 to cover Drew's possible 15400. Barbara's possible 22400? Robin would not have been close. Perhaps pretty 2K on the nose DD bets by Barbara tipped Robin off that she may not have had to worry about Barbara going big? Barbara did 11200-4500 which would have been ...

That one required the 'Alex Jacob pause and verify'. Eric was too quick on the trigger for that. Probably what caused him to be in the red and playing catch up tonight and in Friday's game also.

Re: Monday, December 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

That FBI category might have been too difficult for a Teen Tournament, and maybe even challenging for college students. I felt the clues were overly easy for regular J! contestants. Identify J. Edgar Hoover from a photo? Show James Earl Ray's mugshots & then spot them an April 1968 assasination? C'm...

Re: Monday, December 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

0/3 on DDs kept scores down while if Robin got her DD3 then she would have locked it at 20400 to 9800. It turned out not to matter as Robin had the sole solve. And if Eric had come up with "A Thousand Points of Light", and been up 17800 to 14400, she still would have won. But I hope she would have ...

Re: Friday, December 20, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Eric certainly took a long time to get his mojo going in this game. He was lucky to pull out of DJ with the lead, being such an easy Final clue was served up. The pre-FJ scores made for an interesting but definitive wagering scenario for each player. I was hoping to see Lucy resist the temptation to...

Re: Tuesday, December 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Damn, Alex was cold. After the J! round: "Kirby, you're not off to a good start at all today..." She picked it up in DJ! getting $3600 followed by solving the FJ! clue. It was all for naught though, as she needed to wager something to have a chance to win. Seeing her critical fail in that manner ad...

Re: Tuesday, December 10, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I don't recall Alex Jacob taking a long time to pick clues. But then I haven't noticed that about Jennifer either. I don't find her annoying in this or any other regard. Uuhmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, Movie Exchanges for $800. It was usually when she switched categories, and certainly not strategic. Annoying m...

Yeah, that irked me a bit.
I haven't totaled it up in the archives, but Jennifer left a considerable amount of cash on the table in all but one of her lock games. She may have already broke into the Top Ten, had she been more loose with her wagers.

she finally faced opponents that had a clue...figured it would come sooner or later With the run under 10 games the powers did not do one of their early hype hints promo like they did for Austin and James. I suspected Jennifer was not going to hit double digits. Jennifer had a great run though neve...
