Re: Friday, November 10, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

i don't often brag about my scores here. i don't have to prove anything.
but i was 5-for-5 instagets in "science fiction" today.
and i'm sure that our departed friend paucle would have matched me nanosecond-for-nanosecond.
congrats to the semifinalists! it looks really good!

"clinton" wasn't such a terrible guess, for there was, in fact, vice president george clinton, who served under jefferson and madison. but he never became president, and bill was never vice-president.

silverscreentest correctly noted the difference between hugos and nebulas.
the clue in the game made reference to recent controversy. that was surely about the "sad puppies" and their attempts to derail the hugo elective process.

for 35 years, i lived about 15 yards away from the entrances to the #1 local subway, part of the IRT 7th avenue line. i'd take that downtown to chambers street, and transfer to the #2 or #3 express, and then three stops to wall street.
the 7th avenue line was opened in 1904.

one of the authors in the science fiction answer was pohl. i've been reading science fiction since the late '50s. fred pohl (whose four careers in the field included author, editor, agent, and author - in that order) was one of my favorite science fiction authors for many decades. one of my big disa...

opusthepenguin asked: "Interesting question on "by a hair." I could see the judges going either way. Not sure how I'd rule if I were one of the judges. "By a nose" is the standard expression. But I'd bet announcers have used "by a hair" from time to time. The catch may be that the clue specified tha...

Re: Wednesday, June 21, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I will have to remember riffling. That sounds like it could be an LL.question. I said "ruffling". :( in all poker rooms without automatic shufflers, the classic way to prepare the deck for a new hand is to 1) scramble the cards facedown on the table, 2) assemble and square the deck, and then 3a) ri...
