Re: Monday, July 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Yeah...Suzanne still doesn't seem to impress us pretty much. And for a teacher, this baffles us. Michelle is basically playing bungee jumping in a volcano. I usually would expect a teacher to know how to add, especially after watching her first two games. First game: Makes a terrible bet that would...

Re: Friday, July 13, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Vincent could have won by avoiding the cross-out. He said, “I misread the question.” That is a wild misinterpretation of the clue’s wording to go that way after already having the correct response written. I'm curious how he read the clue - as you point out, since he got the correct response initia...

Re: Wednesday, July 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

NHO "noel" meaning a Christmas song. As in "The First Noel," which is heard in every church and every shopping mall every Christmas. Have to admit that I've always just assumed noel in that context was just the first Christmas greeting. Finding out that it is the same thing as a carol was news to m...

Re: Thursday, July 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Ugh ugh ugh. I thought it was too late for this, but I went with Silent Spring. Ugh ugh ugh. Ouch on not even guessing a novel as the clue specified, or a work to fit the category's decade. That seems more like something I would do than you with your prior successes on so many FJ! clues. J! has use...

Re: Tuesday, July 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Am I crazy, or did Alex pronounce Cerasus with a hard c? That led me further away from the answer. He did, but that made it sound more like cherries than I was pronouncing it in my head from reading the clue in the NY Times. Even if I waited until hearing him say it, I would still have been thinkin...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

So about that guessing thing... Monday I had Washington. Tuesday, olives. Seems that even when I do guess I'm no closer to being right. Considering that the players are 0-6, you're in good company for a change. Monday and Tuesday are going to poll well below 50%. And hey, you knew that olives are a...

Speaking of turkeys, how awful was that rhyme category. Truly groan inducing - and not in a good way.

Re: Tuesday, July 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I came up with apricots - and it turns out Turkey is the largest producer of dried apricots. Cherries would have been far down on the list of fruits I'd associate with Turkey - and definitely behind figs, olives and dates. The etymology of Cerasus was Greek to me.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

So is there a trick to Stupid Answers? Because even by my standards I do horribly with it. In 1982, Tony Randall hosted these awards at the Imperial theater Well, none of the other words in the clue sounds like an award to me, so even though I've never heard of them, it must be the Imperial Awards,...

Re: Monday, July 9, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Landed on TR and felt pretty confident - confident enough not to go looking around for anyone else. Even if I thought about Truman, I didn't really know when McKinley died in 1901. To have it come down to a difference of a few months made this a lot tougher than it seemed. I was a little surprised t...

Re: Wednesday, July 4, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I recall them always being called floaties when I was a kid (in the 80s), water wings became more common in the 90s, to the best of my recollection. Not sure if it was a brand name that became more widespread like Kleenex or if it's just another term for the same thing, but I believe it is probably...

Re: Thursday, July 5, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I lost out on a coin flip between Stowe and Alcott on FJ. What a dumb clue. At least we missed with Americans. Steve clearly had a Brit and I wonder if Suzanne was heading towards Jane Austen? Hope it was not (Shirley) Jackson. Not to mention that Steve had a Brit who was born in 1890 and who didn'...

Re: Tuesday, July 3, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I thought this was a fairly tough FJ. Peace Palace led me to the Netherlands, but the clue implied that the internment site was also famous - which pointed more to Poland. So, that left me wondering if there was some famous peace palace in Poland that I didn't know about, or a famous internment cam...

Re: Tuesday, July 3, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

It seems that most of the women in the 2nd half of season 34 fall prey to poor betting, and this game definitely showed. Holy Chauvinism, Batman! females generally do suck when it comes to wagering...but all contestants regardless of sex pretty much suck when it comes to strategic wagering...female...

Re: Monday, July 2, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

That was a rough start to the game with two players still in the red at DD1. BOOK OF THE MONTH wanted a response with a month of the year. One of the 12. Seems simple enough, yet grasping that categorical hint seemed to fly over the heads of the players. That was pretty odd, particularly since they...

Re: Friday, June 29, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I'll be curious to see how this FJ polls. My guess is that the contestants were thrown off by the reference to London. Otherwise, I don't understand how Scott and Nick couldn't even come up with someone famous from that era as a wild guess. Ruth's guess was certainly interesting - but at least she w...

Re: Thursday, June 28, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Another good set of contestants; I have to admit rooting for Kat after that rough start. It seems like it would be every contestant's nightmare (or one of them), i.e., completely forget the category right out of the starting gate. Again, I was impressed that if she was flustered by it, she recovered...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

On an unrelated note. Pre-Fame Celebs for $400 in this game : "Just for the taste of it", Demi Moore crawled onto a ledge to get a can of this beverage & plummeted off (but survived) I thought this was by far the most obscure in the category. "Just for the Taste of It" was Diet Coke's slogan for on...

Re: Wednesday, June 27, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Yeah, so far this "just put anything down for FJ!" technique isn't working for me. That's because you're just supposed to put something down - not anything - i..e, something at least vaguely related to the category. Anyway, another good group of contestants; Amy seemed fun and seemed like she was j...
