Re: You guys are obsessed over wagering way too much.

Eric's wager was not that much better cause he let 3rd back in the game when he had him locked out Eric once again wins with a bad final jeopardy bet that would have cost him the win on a TS. He should have bet 2601. Bad Wager Alert!! heartbreaking loss for Erica if only she had wagered more on her...

Re: Friday, May 18, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

It's like Claire wasn't even playing to win the tournament. Larry's smart wager on his DD all but locked up the championship for him. I thought FJ! was too easy. (A boundary between 2 colonies? Surely it can't be the Mason-Dixon Line.) Spent the last 25 seconds trying to think of any other famous b...

Re: Thursday, May 17, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I guess the writers figured that "plumbago" is fair game since it has come up before -- and the connection with a common school supply -- but seriously?? Way to make three bright teachers look silly, writers. Boo! :x

(Pscoliosis was the best I could come up with).

"Pine" was what gave it to me.
Same here. Particularly when paired with Ulysses and Menelaus. Another case of smart folks overthinking it?? Because this seemed like another pretty easy FJ.

Re: Monday, May 14, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

For once, instead of flailing away at southern cities, my mind immediately rattled off monarchs: Edward, William, George, Charles....Charleston! I'm glad Louis(ville) didn't come to mind, though I probably would've rejected it as not southern enough. Another day, another 2nd place overwager. Ho-hum...

Re: Monday, May 14, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Surprised at yet another 0-fer on what should have been a relatively easy FJ. The quote seems obscure but Butler --> blockade runner --> southern port --> Charleston - oh, and Charles is the name of a monarch.

That said, never heard of "netiquette" - even though spellcheck apparently has.

I loved the pronunciation of Pleiades. But then I say Illinoizzz, and ConneCt-icut, and Hawa-ya for those three states and flip-flop on Missourie-Missourah depending on usage. Is there some part of the country that pronounces those states like that?? And I don't even know what that third state is s...

Re: Hammer's "Did you get this?" poll, take 2

This teachers tournament has been more difficult than most so it's not too surprising to see worse scores on what should be easy clues. Bambi, for example, is a classic but unless you own a copy, they never play it on any Disney channel, or so rarely as to count as "never." Which seems like an odd m...

Re: Friday, May 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Tough break for Ranjani on that FJ wager. She couldn't know that no one hit $20,000 all week, so a modest wager would have kept her around for next week.

A little surprised that it was a sole get, however. (And at least it wasn't another movie related clue!).

Is it just me or have the FJs this tournament been extra tough?
Definitely harder IMO. And I'm all for clues about movies/Hollywood/Oscars but it's getting a little ridiculous lately.

Re: Wednesday, May 9, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I was curious about what opera Mary Alice was trying to get out at the end there, i.e., "La W ..."?? After a little research, my guess is "La Wally," which happens to have an Alpine setting as well. (Spoiler alert - things apparently end in an avalanche. Literally). So, while I thought she inadvert...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

For some reason, I keep keep getting Yellowstone and Yosemite mixed up. Suggestions? In this particular case, it was made very easy by including geyser in the clue (US National Park with) geysers = Yellowstone And I know that, but just like "Which of Jupiter/Saturn/Uranus/Neptune is biggest", it bl...

I'm guessing Mary Alice got caught way overthinking a simple FJ clue that came down to "blah blah Alpine blah blah blah." Because when I saw the clue this morning, and then looked at the contestants, I thought, "well, Mary Alice will certainly get it - will anyone else?"

Bob and Ericka might have fared better on FJ had they seen Shakespeare in Love. Which brings us to Day 4 of a Best Picture winner/nominee connection in FJ clues.

Re: Monday, May 7, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I thought last week's somewhat similar clue had enough to get to the correct response. Today - not so much. It's not like there is much in the way of 19th century transportation to consider and stagecoach was the second thing that came to mind (after steamship) but the connection wasn't happening. N...

Two Best Picture winners in a row! Good catch! A pretty questionable win - although 1956 didn't exactly produce a crop of movies that have stood the test of time. Among the Best Pic nominees, Giant probably should have won. But, they really liked their spectacle movies in that era. Around the World...

Re: 5/3/18 FJ Poll [SPOILER!]

I want to see it at some point; I periodically search the digital TV listings to see if it's on. So far I've only ever seen it available on PPV. Hmmm? That's very odd; I've never heard of such an old movie being offered on PPV. Are you sure this is correct? It's available on my system (Verizon) rig...

57 here and have seen it enough to have memorized a lot of it; easily more than 25 times. It's not even my favorite classic movie but it's near the top of the list. The Maltese Falcon , To Have and Have Not , The Big Sleep and The African Queen are other great Bogart movies. Bringing Up Baby, The Ph...

That said, it's Casablanca . Anyone over 40 who hasn't seen it has probably worked at least a little bit to avoid it. :D I finally saw it in about 2004-05 (I was 43) when I had access to TCM. I was blown away, and I was particularly amazed by how well it had aged. (And I've still never seen Citizen...
