Re: Tuesday, November 21, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I was sitting with Wilbur's entourage in the studio audience during this game. The episode hasn't aired here yet, but if anyone noticed a tire-screechy gasp of horror when they ruled against Wilbur's FJ, that was me. With single-letter FJ's still in recent memory ("Q" and "K"), this ruling is a hea...

Re: Monday, November 20, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I had never heard anything about Mother Theresa's background so it was a surprise to see this as a triple get, not to mention pretty much universal opinion here that this was an easy FJ. I would have guessed Europe, but Albania would probably be just about last on my list of guesses, and maybe even ...

Re: Thursday, November 16, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I am also surprised they didn't give Austin credit for "transsexual" since it does also have 11 letters and it did used to be the term even though it's not in favor now. You're right. Transsexual was the accepted term in the 90s, and it fits the category. Austin was robbed. The problem is, "transse...

Re: Thursday, November 16, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Two quibbles: 1) I am almost certain that slugs do, in fact, eat protists (most of which are non-photosynthetic). Alan's response (" protists ") should have been accepted. 2) As regards a pope who served in Hitler's youth brigade, Austin's response was " Benedict ." There have been 16 popes who cho...

Re: Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Close, but no kewpie doll. I said "Vichy", not remembering that it was named after the town, not a person. I know Petain, but wasn't coming up with him in the requisite 30 seconds. It was, however, a good FJ. A little bit of thinking and some knowledge combined. Same here. For some reason, I convin...

I assume there's some sarcasm there, because the $2,000 clue was Asimov, or at least his novelization of Fantastic Voyage.
Actually, I had completely forgotten that they all missed the Fantastic Voyage clue.

Re: FJs for the 11/6/17 week

        Thursday's was the first proper TOC FJ as it required knowing more than a single bit of trivia and then being able to tie them together in 30 seconds. Also, it's a cute image of street corner vendors selling potatoes, corn, whea...

Re: Friday, November 10, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I couldn't believe the .200 batting average in Science Fiction. These guys' geek cards will officially be under review. Amen. Next they'll be missing Asimov clues. But, IIRC, it was some old school Science Fiction, right? Said the guy who recently rescued his Barsoom collection (and Pellucida...

Re: Thursday, November 9, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Despite living in Washington the only state I could think of with a strong association to a particular crop was Idaho and potatoes. Although I couldn't quite rationalize people selling potatoes on the street during the depression I couldn't come up with anything better. Can't say I've ever heard of...

Re: Friday, November 10, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Ouch! What a painful possessive. I'd have a lot more sympathy if not for the improvident wager. I'm pretty sure that historically $16,000 has pretty much always been enough to secure a wild card spot. --Bob I wonder how $16,000 stacks up in past TOCs. Because it does look like Justin over-estimated...

Re: Thursday, November 9, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I was sorry that Seth shot himself in the foot with a couple of pretty easy misses - Pearl Harbor on a Friday (really?) and 1788. But for those, he might have been looking good for a spot in the next round. I was also sorry to see Sam go - was it just me or did he look like he maybe wasn't feeling w...

Count me still unaware whether Patti pronounces her name Lu-Pown or Lu-Pony, but I reckon Austin's probably right here? I'm just curious if you've ever heard anyone pronounce it Lu-Pony! (Because yes, Austin pronounced it correctly). I won't out the guilty party, but yes. It's also one of those cas...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

I doubt this will catch on... Nostradamus! It's pretty remarkable to look back the beginning of this thread, particularly at the genuine expressions of hope that TPH would take some of the suggestions to heart, etc. Years later and it's the same exact back-and-forth. There's an old saying about "pa...

Re: Thursday, November 9, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Major ouch on Seth missing his DD off by a year as a get there could have kept him in play for a WC with a lower wager in the FJ! round. Lilly & Tim had to love seeing a tough FJ! clue come up. I did not know where to go with the clue and considered Midwest (corn/wheat state), South (cotton state),...

Re: Wednesday, November 8, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

With a couple significant poetry questions in just the past couple of games - and the fact that it's obviously a popular subject for Jeopardy, I suggest that one easy way to get a very basic familiarization with the subject is John Lithgow's anthology, The Poet's Corner . The anthology spans about 6...

Glad to see I wasn't the only person to guess Swaziland.
It sounds like most folks thought of Swaziland or Lesotho but not both. Because yeah, had I thought of both, I would have probably picked the wrong one.

Re: Tuesday, November 7, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Bhutan? Myanmar?? I think they either misread or misunderstood the clue - and it just goes to prove that even some of the best players have one of those moments. (At least Bhutan satisfies a couple of the elements, but yikes to Myanmar).
