Re: 2019 TOC Updates

The seven 4-time winners who didn't make the cut this time are going to be in the next TOC, right? I assume they were notified of this. So I don't understand why Emma would be taking a spot away from a deserving person if that person (and six others) will get the opportunity to play again next year....

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

Anyone else get half a dozen identical e-mails for each match result this morning?
Science is turning out to be harder than I expected. Upsets is playing easier than I expected. (I am curious, though, how 61% of LLamas knew Leicester City. Do that many people follow soccer?)

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

Congrats to BigDaddyMatty on winning my rundle, and to quarterrican on completing the long trip from E to A. I had a personal high of 94 TCA and had the best defense in A Horizon for the second season in a row, but also tied a personal high in losses and set a new one in CAA. I did not expect to win...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I WAG'd "pop art" to get my second 9(6) of the season. I was the only person in my A rundle to get all 6 and, with that, have clinched a return to A for LL82. If I hadn't had such a tough schedule for 2/3 of the season, I could've been a contender.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

At the end of last week (in A), I was 3-13-1 and facing relegation.
This week, I went 4-0-1, and will almost certainly remain in A.
You never know.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I'm finally out of the relegation zone! After consecutive wins against Blue Lion and mrparadise, I get to face mrexley today (perhaps the strongest player in my A division) so I may be heading back down soon. There have been eight straight match days at under 50% league-wide. So no, this season is N...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I've been in the relegation zone since Day 2 and have led my rundle in Correct Answers Allowed most of the time. My defense is over .700, but it's hard to win when your opponents average 4 and a half correct answers a day and you average 3 and a half. There have been only two match days where I got ...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

This number of games I've lost is also the name of a Star Trek: Voyager character.
The correct response:
SpoilerShow
What is Seven of Nine?
I didn't think yesterday was all that tough (lost 3(3)-4(4)), but 13% got 0(0)'s and only 0.5% got 9(6)'s.

Re: Monday, June 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This was the greatest game ever played. Is $53,200 the highest combined Coryat ever? I think it is, and it may be an unbreakable record. Another unbreakable record: 27 correct FJ's in a row. I know there are boardies who have attained longer streaks from their living rooms, but being able to do that...

Re: Jeopardy! Players on the WQC Rankings

Three others from the venue I attended:
Chris Goheen, Season 10, 1-game winner (only his second game is archived)
Christine O'Donnell, this season (lost to future TOCer Kyle Jones)
Tim Lynch, Season 15

2019 World Quizzing Championships

Results are slowly coming in... lots of boardies and contestants at the top. I set a new personal record of 100, 19 higher than my last two tests. Most people's scores improved.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

Finally won a game yesterday thanks to a 9(6). Those weren't good categories for me (art, TV, film) but I got everything very quickly except Sleeping Beauty , which took me about two minutes. I believe that came up on Jeopardy recently. Good luck to everyone competing in the WQC tomorrow! It's the e...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I'm starting off 0-3, in last place, and now 0-5 against the person who beat me yesterday, who has a lower QPct than I do.
The bad news: it's going to be a long season.
The good news: it's going to be a long season, and I can't fall in the standings.

Re: J! in the Media

Regarding the CNN interview, I can't figure out why James would tell the other contestants he took a year off his job to train, because admittedly the only job he's had since college is being a professional sports gambler. Some people are intensely competitive, and that tends to really get under the...

My stats last night: 47 R/ 1 W and $37,800
Tonight: 31 R/ 4 W and $14,600
Amazing more contestants haven't finished in the red during his run. I would've if I'd been up there tonight.

Re: Wednesday, May 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Patrick Quinn won the Teachers Tournament in 2012. Will Conor Quinn win it seven years later? The only other same-surname pair to win the same tournament (that I can think of) are Raynell and Leonard Cooper.
Now, to the game: it was very good right up until the math category. :x

Re: Wednesday, May 8, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Francois was fantastic; only did a very quick scan of the Archive, but 26,600 appears to be the highest Coryat ever recorded in a Teacher Tourney game, yes? (And by a fair margin, at that. Colby, Larry and Jason, notably, topped out around 20-21k. Next best appear to be in the 22-23k range.) Not qu...

Re: Monday, May 6, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

We were spoiled rotten the last 22 games. Never thought I'd see a game like this again but here we are! The biggest head-scratcher wasn't the triple-neg on "Which planet did Herschel discover*?" but "Which war did the Army of the Potomac fight in?" Without all the negs, it would've been a decent gam...
