Re: Wednesday, June 23, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

That Tennyson clue may have been one of the worst clues in J! history. Here, here. BRITISH POETRY is a category I always look to run, and would have undoubtedly started at the bottom had I been playing. That clue just made me go "uuuuh, okay..." Same with the $800 clue in ART & ARTISTS. It didn't k...

Re: Monday, June 21, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The thesaurus seemed more likely than the dictionary +1 for Roget here as that was my exact thinking. I should have paid more attention to the "family friend" part of the clue, as I knew Roget was British. Avocado Hand? Swimmer's Itch? Grinch Syndrome? Geographic Tongue? Baby Wrist? Nope, never hea...

Re: 2020 Jeopardy North American Audition Tour

Best of luck to you, triviawayne. May the categories be ever in your favor. I also wanted to ask the veterans of these boards a question I'm sure they've read a thousand times. Is there anything more I could be doing to be selected for an audition, other than simply taking the test when available? I...

Re: Friday, June 18, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I have a question for the judges: How badly am I allowed to butcher the word "oeuvre"?

I said something similar to oh-VUR, rather than OH-vruh. Thoughts?

Re: Friday, June 18, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This Final seemed awfully YEKIOYD. Other than just knowing that specific line from "The Metamorphosis", the only way it seems to navigate this one is "name an early 20th C. European author from a country that was probably not the home nation of an author from the 6 CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF THEIR NOVE...

Re: Wednesday, June 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Wow, I was just thinking about Luther Vandross' "Dance with my Father" just the other day. Didn't even hear it on the radio or anything, just popped in my head. Funny how these things work. I'm surprised by the struggles the board seems to have had with FJ. Maybe having a 2 year old helped make this...

Re: Monday, June 14, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I agree, a very weird FJ. Didn't really come up with anything, but as soon as I saw Caitlin's response, it looked good to me.

So what happens with a roughly-written Final? The person who thinks the North Pole is in the North Sea wins.

Re: Friday, June 11, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Crushed DJ tonight with 26 R. Never heard of the Ghost Dance movement, so I'll have to look that one up. Missed DD3 as my French is no bueno, and blanked on seasoned. Also said dark matter instead of antimatter  I really, really, really wanted Mayim to head my list of hopefuls, but Ken is stil...

Re: Thursday, June 10, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Picked up tons of expensive trash in DJ, only clamming on Charing Cross. If they would have mentioned the Helene Hanff book, I would have snuffed it out. I am big on the Bialik bandwagon, but I agree that these little quips and comments after responses have to stop, especially at the end of the game...

Re: Wednesday, June 9, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'd be interested in a poll on which 2 of the 3 states everyone said for DD2. I feel like Texas is the most obvious, but when you start with Kansas (like I did), it's more natural to jump to Arkansas after that. I also wonder if someone was way off like Mara and said Illinois, or even worse, Massach...

Re: Wednesday, June 9, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Disappointed I didn't run POETIC BOOK TITLES because I blew the $400 clue. I knew it wasn't For Whom the Bell Tolls , because John Donne coined that. But then I got stuck on which Hemingway title sounded the most poetic and went with The Sun Also Rises , ignoring the WWI part of the clue :? At least...

Re: Tuesday, June 8, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Lots of requests from the judges so far this thread. I have an alternate response of gi instead of kimono in FASHIONABLY for $200 and I'm counting it unless someone else can prove otherwise. I should have snagged up all the DJ $2000 trash, but I switched from my first instinct of Baha'i and said Sik...

I could make my usual comment that this FJ category favored the generations older than mine, but I should have known this one. Oh well, one to add to the memory banks.

Re: Friday, June 4, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

One last thing, and I promise I'm done whinging:

Why have the category be 17TH CENTURY WRITING, and then have the clue begin "This 17th Century work..."? It just seems to be written by the Department of Redundancy Department.

Re: Friday, June 4, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

17th Century + giants = Don Quixote to me, and never thought of changing, though the water part did confuse me. I disagree with Mark's assessment and believe that clue was too tough as written. A mention of England or reference to it being a philosophical work would have been nice to take me away f...

Re: Thursday, June 3, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

French history... Definitely not a strength of mine, no matter which century. Figuring I was dead meat, I spent the whole commercials' time trying to come up with some 17th Century Frenchman... Came up empty. Something possibly to help you for next time: When they ask for 17th Century Frenchmen, th...

Re: 2021 Current Events Discussion Thread

It's been reported that Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski will retire after the upcoming 2021-22 season. "Coach K" has been at the helm of the Blue Devils since 1980; his 42 seasons is the second-longest current tenure in all of college basketball and longest in Division I (behind Herb Ma...
