Re: Tuesday, June 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Yeah, I was thrown off because I don't think of chug-a-lug as a verb, or even a verb phrase. Usually I hear it as a noun (he's such a chug-a-lug) or a simple interjection shouted repeatedly at someone who's chugging. The interview with Emma was highly awkward, since she wouldn't have had any real pe...

Re: Wednesday, May 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was impressed they managed to get all five of them. For me, I had to pause the DVR and take way more than five seconds to parse those clues. But then, before & after and other wordplay categories often trip me up too. (Mute + mote took more than a mite of time only because I'd never heard the word...

That one category in Double Jeopardy -- no, not that category, but the other one, the one that was all the way on the right side of the board -- the one with all the meandering garden path clues -- (finger snap) Could we please never have a category like that again?

Re: Monday, May 13, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

In my continuing trend of drawing knowledge from strange places: I know of Lee Radziwill from the documentary/musical/HBO movie Grey Gardens , although I butchered the last name in my response. Had I actually been playing, I'd have just said Lee and hoped that was enough. And I couldn't recall John ...

I was really surprised there wasn't a reversal on chimes. They're absolutely the same thing as tubular bells. I work for a music publisher, and our house style uses the term chimes.

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Central), April 10, 2019

Scary rhyming with hairy, and sherry rhyming with Jerry. Heh, those all rhyme for me too. After listening to some Mary-merry-marry examples, I'm guessing scary is pronounced more like "scaaa-ree"? Like the a in cat. (That's assuming you don't pronounce cat as "kyeaat"! Which allegedly some of us Cl...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Central), April 10, 2019

Ooh, we've got a good ol'-fashioned accent-off! For those who say scary and sherry don't rhyme, how do you say them? This reminds me of the time someone told me the names Erin and Aaron shouldn't be pronounced the same (the former is supposed to be more like "ehh-rin" and the latter "air-on," this p...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (West Palm Beach), March 27, 2019

Well, this is what I get for being away from JBoard for a bit... I really wish I'd known about last night's test! The April dates are -- just like last year -- during tech week for a show I'm playing, whereas last night I was at home doing nothing. Oh well, it was good to practice, and I did way bet...

Re: Wednesday, February 27, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I stumbled on "read [x] mind" partly because Alex didn't adequately explain the category. I assumed the 3-word phrases had to be 4-letter, 3-letter, and 4-letter words, but when that clue was the first selection, I hesitated. In common speech I'd have probably used the singular they ("read their min...

If the FJ read like this: I'm sorry for your miss, but I sure did enjoy following the winding path to your response. Presuming God Save the Queen was standard fare for such a ceremony, I immediately ruled out My Country 'Tis of Thee, unless they also held up a banner saying "But we're thinkin...

I wish I'd made the brothers connection, because I likely would've gotten it instantly after that. Fargo was the correct response to a clue about Frances McDormand on the J! page-a-day calendar just a few weeks ago.

Re: Monday, November 26, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I found "cursed by an ancestor's crime" very helpful in deciding on the right response. Hawthorne was haunted because an ancestor was an unrepentant judge in the Salem witch trials. And supposedly that's why he added the W to Ha[w]thorne. For some reason I've always remembered that anecdote from 10...

Just wanted to thank you for sending me on a little map study the other day, so I could instaget the Dardanelles clue in Wednesday's game.

I feel if Truman had been the correct response, the clue would have read "sent a congratulatory telegram, but later told reporters..." The choice of the word "then" implies to me that the comment to reporters happened immediately after the sending of the telegram.

The "figure out 2 parts of the clue" clues always require me to pause the DVR, but Poke Out An I was particularly egregious. I must have spent 5 minutes just on the $1200 clue. I first tried to think of computer keys, couldn't come up with any synonyms for "landed," then looked at my computer's keyb...

Templeton is reluctant to accompany Charlotte and Wilbur to the fair, but after he hears the animals (is it mainly the sheep?) describe all the fairground garbage, he's in. It's the goose! I was semi-obsessed with both the book and animated movie for a few years as a kid. Somewhere in a box of stuf...

I loved the pronunciation of Pleiades. But then I say Illinoizzz, and ConneCt-icut, and Hawa-ya for those three states and flip-flop on Missourie-Missourah depending on usage.
Ah, but do you pronounce Topeka's state as kinSAW? ;)

I noted the J! page-a-day calendar coincidence too. Funny.

My knowledge of Krav Maga comes entirely from How I Met Your Mother. As it happens, it was just enough to get that clue.
