More research:
Jade emperor, Daoist deity, also credited. In face BEST answer.. Historical Buddha also credited though lived thousands of years after legendary zodiacal race.

Tough question
Religious Buddha lived for thousands of years before historical Buddha in various incarnations.

Re: Thursday, September 20, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Ruled out Buddha because I didn't think a religion-based answer would be "dismissed" as folklore. Would a question about Noah's Ark be considered folklore? If it's extra-canonical, I don't see why it might not be considered folklore. Not all stories about Biblical figures are found in the Bible. (T...

Confucious here. I was unaware that magical deeds were ascribed to The Buddha. A recent LL question had to do with a whole genre of literature (in India) involving various incarnations of the Buddha. Some of these resemble fables or folklore, so it is not surprising to me. https://en.wikipedia.org/...

Re: Thursday, September 20, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Ok, how does anyone make the jump from Chinese zodiac to Buddha? :x I guessed Lao Tzu, figuring Confucius was later. I got the China connection (although that took me a few seconds), but didn't know where to go from there. I didn't think it would be Confucius (he doesn't strike me to have that sort...

Yalu River? Sounds like China. Then what's nearby?... Uh... uh... North Korea it is. Woo 3/3!
See what happens when you guess instead of just throwing your hands up in despair? :)

Congratulations!

NHO "Once and Future King" This book was split into two parts. The first part detailed Arthur's childhood, with Merlin turning him into various animals to see a variety of leadership styles and organizational structures. (This was the basis of the Disney movie The Sword and the Stone, I believe.) T...

Re: FJs for the 7/16/18 week

This is my first 5/5 since I've started keeping track.

Happy I got my first 5/5 before my first 0/5, but for a while there, I was missing more than I was getting.

(Edit to add that I've seen parts of Close Encounters, but I don't think I've seen the whole thing.)

Is there any reason why the FJ clue didn't mention Ford? That kind of threw me. (I still got it right, because of the "social reorganization" with the Alphas and Betas etc., and the fact that Huxley uses the AF (After Ford) date convention in the novel.) But it did have me trying to think if there w...

I was thinking Cerasus was a varietal of some fruit, and I had never heard of it, so I didn't get that hint. Was waffling between figs and pomegranates, and went for figs because I assumed they'd have a wider variety of type and maybe that was a variety of fig I wasn't aware of.

I immediately thought of Haydn, but I couldn't figure out which of his hooks this might be. I was alternating between Farewell and Surprise because these seemed to be two hooks that could be added later. (The Clock symphony, probably not, and I couldn't think of any others at the moment.) I went wit...

Re: Last Week's contestant run: Conspiracy or Mystery?

There are 6 different orderings of contestants, so any ordering has a 1/6 chance of happening. That would be true if the contestants were randomly selected from a pool that was 50% M 50% F. I'm not sure that's true for podia 2 and 3. It's definitely not true for podium 1. That said, I don't think t...

Re: Last Week's contestant run: Conspiracy or Mystery?

There are 6 different orderings of contestants, so any ordering has a 1/6 chance of happening. Over a 5 day week, the chance of that particular ordering is 1/6^5, or 1/7776. If there are, say, 210 episodes per year, and Jeopardy! has been airing for 34 years, or approximately 7000 episodes. It would...

You're in the US, Alex. Pronounce "lieutenant" like an American! :) There have been plenty of categories that would be easier taken in order, but I don't know if there have been any with this advisement attached to it. (I mean, I don't think that "pep" made "pepper mill" any easier, but I might have...

3) Founded by Catholics? Is Maryland from Mary's land? As in Mary mother of Christ? These TOMs are killing me. At one point, I believe, the only legal Catholic church in the British empire was in the colony of Maryland. (This is one of those little trivia bits I learned as a Catholic. There's a goo...

First Communion, for 8 year olds, would not qualify. A rite of passage could be passing from any life stage into a subsequent one. SOCIOLOGY $800 : First communion can be this type of 3-word ritual representing a change from one role to another. Does a response of "Coming-of-age" work for you guys? My first association of Menelaus is from O Brother Where Art Thou?: Gov. Menelaus "Pass the biscuits" "Pappy" O'Daniel. But that was enough (with Ulysses) to get me to the Trojan War and then the Trojan Horse.
