Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)
You're pretty wrong about this. Did/do you feel the same way about Malala Yousafzai? Had to look her up. I still think they wouldn't even have given her the time of day if she weren't a kid. That's the impression I get literally every single time a kid does something noteworthy. They just get 15 mi...

Re: Tuesday, December 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I was trying to think of what it was (just trying to remember the group associated with Dorothy Parker, who is the only literary person I associate with jokes and gags and stuff), and I came up with Algonquin Round Circle. But that's probably not close enough to count.

Re: Thursday, November 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
All I could think of for FJ was “incarnation”, but it didn’t seem quite Sanskrit-derived (which it isn’t, after looking it up later - Middle English derived from Latin). But definition-wise, it’s an exact match 8-) Eh, "incarnation" means roughly "made flesh" not "descent.&...

Re: Thursday, November 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Should have gotten FJ as I am very familiar with the term, but instead I could not get "manifestation" out of my head. And really, except for the whole derived-from-Sanskrit thing, it is not too bad. "Sanskrit" primed me for Hinduism, and I know that manifestations of gods are c...

She's from Chicago, and 312 is the area code of Chicago. 1-(312) was meant to be a shoutout to her home city.

Re: Friday, March 1, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Fitzgerald was from Minnesota. I'm not sure why anybody would associate him with New Jersey who didn't already know he went to Princeton, but that fact is pretty well known. (Yes, he also went to prep school in NJ...) Leonard is too young to remember (yes, I said it!) all the publicity Brooke Shiel...

Re: Friday, March 1, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I was hoping for a Leonard statement performance. He played well and got a YEKIOYD DD and missed with a pretty good guess. He represented well. I think that his DD could be puzzled out. Fitzgerald -> New Jersey -> Princeton. At least, that's a reasonable guess, and probably the reason why they incl...

Re: Thursday, February 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Played this FJ off the clue of the day, and found “double-talk” maybe a little misleading, as I was led to think about nonsense words and phrases, which of course got me nowhere. Never would have thought they simply meant a word repeated twice. I didn't get the "double talk" portion until...

Re: Friday, February 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
All I could think of for FJ was Margaret Sanger. Goldman doesn't ring a bell. Keep in mind that Brad had one really bad game previously, against Michael Rooney and Steve Chernicoff...that he somehow still won. I think that it will take more than this to take away his GOAT status. Sanger is probably...

Re: Friday, February 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
It's a tough FJ because Goldman isn't as famous as the major suffragettes, but anyone who has read E.L. Doctorow's Ragtime should have gotten it pretty quickly. At least, that's what worked for me. A YA book I read as a teen, https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/626176.The_Silver_Link_the_Silken_Tie...

Re: Thursday, September 20, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Ruled out Buddha because I didn't think a religion-based answer would be "dismissed" as folklore. Would a question about Noah's Ark be considered folklore? If it's extra-canonical, I don't see why it might not be considered folklore. Not all stories about Biblical figures are found in the...

Confucious here. I was unaware that magical deeds were ascribed to The Buddha. A recent LL question had to do with a whole genre of literature (in India) involving various incarnations of the Buddha. Some of these resemble fables or folklore, so it is not surprising to me. https://en.wikipedia.org/...
