Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

The Toronto Raptors win the 2019 NBA Championship over the Golden State Warriors 4 games to 2. This is the first championship for the franchise, and the first title for a Canadian team in one of the Big 4 sports leagues (NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL) since the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series in Octobe...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I have an econ degree and don't remember ever hearing the name David Ricardo. The 6% on grisaille I can believe, but I'm skeptical of 14% knowing Ricardo (especially with almost double that on the MCWA (among them, mine)). But my opponent thought I would, so I did manage to take down my rundle's le...

Re: Jeopardy! Players on the WQC Rankings

I assume that the Raghuveer Mukkamalla who scored 107 is the same guy who made the website for tips about how people who didn't grow up with quizbowl should prepare for Jeopardy!. I'm pretty sure that he recommended children's books as they had a lot of surface knowledge. I think he was on to someth...

Ken plays it most years. I was surprised to not find his name in the standings. I'm not sure if Brad ever has.

Re: 2019 World Quizzing Championships

I also got 100, and on the way home, I got trapped under a supercell and am waiting in a hotel lobby in Bowling Green, OH for the roads to be less flooded. I think that all the potential tornadoes have already passed. I now extremely regret taking the time to do some sightseeing in East Lansing and ...

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

Overtime should be having Jacques Bailly read a word in Romanized O'zbek, and having the kids write down how they think the word is spelled, including the apostrophes in the right places. That will weed them out quickly.

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

So this isn't a current event that would come up on J!, but Beavercreek High School became the first team from the Buckeye State to win NAQT's HSNCT.

One time, a blacksmith came to our synagogue and turned a sword into a plowshare and a spear into a pruning hook using methods that would've been known at that time period. It took about 45 minutes, IIRC.

Re: Season 1 info

Does anyone know if I could find out when J! started airing on WHIO? I want to know whether or not I was actually watching Jerry Frankel's original run from my crib when I was approximately two weeks old. I don't know if this search will show up for you the same way it does for me, but per newspape...

The most unusual thing to happen to the White Sox in 2009 was not the perfect game, but Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko hitting back to back 300th career homers.

Re: Rule Change Effective 4/29/19 - No More FJ! Shout-Outs

I never really care that much, and am totally fine with personal messages. Outside of "What is Aleve?", none of them seem really memorable. You don't think "Sorry Cory, No Jag", "Turd Ferguson", or "Kebert Xela" were memorable? I've actually found quite a few of the joke responses enjoyable. I've s...

Re: Rule Change Effective 4/29/19 - No More FJ! Shout-Outs

I never really care that much, and am totally fine with personal messages. Outside of "What is Aleve?", none of them seem really memorable. I vaguely remember a story that there was an FJ where the answer was two out of the three of Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, and there were instruction...

Re: So...what have we learned so far from James Holzhauer?

It just dawned on me that the $250,000 given to the winner of the ToC is a minimum guarantee. It would be fun to see if James can break that on a two day, total point affair.

Re: J! and other notable contestants on The Chase (possible J! spoilers)

This may be a bit off-topic but I am curious, has anyone on here ever met or interacted with any of the UK or Australian Chasers? And I mean besides appearing as a contestant on this version. Anne Hegerty once proofread a one day tournament that I was going to write for 2020 quiz before it went dow...

Re: Friday, April 19, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Now that the new contestants for the week of 4/22 have been posted, I have a feeling that one of the contestants will just be wagering $4,000 on daily doubles and Final Jeopardy! if she has that much.

I agree that James has settled all question of whether he deserves to be ranked among the greatest of the superchamps. My question, for those of you know who keep track of such things, is how does James's average Coryat compare to the best ever? Here's everyone with an average Coryat of at least $2...

Re: The connection between a quiz bowl background and J! success

NAQT and ACF until 2005 or so were at least a third general knowledge/pop culture, and still had giveaways of "sound like" or "is an anagram of", among others. Most high school teams played various non-pyramidal quizbowl more than NAQT until 2010 or so. Around half of the states in the US were still...
