Jefferson and Hamilton wrote The Federalist Papers together, so that's how I decided to go with Jackson.

I thought I was onto something when I saw that francified Germanic first name+not too long after the Franco-Prussian war would lead to this being the national anthem of Belgium. Unfortunately, I didn't know the name of Belgium's national anthem.

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

While the opening ceremony isn't until Friday and medals don't start getting handed out until Saturday, the Pan American Games started on Wednesday in LIma, Peru. The first game to happen was a women's team handball game where Puerto Rico defeated Canada 23-9. Games that the United States were invol...

One of Friday's contestants is a children's book author who has also edited bestselling children's books by other authors, including my sister-in-law, Amy Ignatow. I can just imagine the amount of controversy that would happen if this FJ had been on Friday's episode.

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

The Ukraine just had an election, where a party based on the TV show Servant of the people, led by the actor who played the prime minister on the show, Volodymyr Zelensky, won a majority of the seats in their parliament. No word yet on whether or not a West Wing party is being created in the US.

I thought that "The Lottery" was a much older story than that, so I guessed Edward Bulwer-Lytton for FJ.
category was women authors
That was a big fail on my part, then. I hope I don't do anything that stupid in the LLRC.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

For people who have done the LLRC before, is there any choice in which proctor each contestant gets assigned? I feel that due to my flag, that people from Michigan or who went to Michigan might pull some unfair tricks on me, and than since Thorsten went to Notre Dame, he might assign me a Michigan f...

There were more spellings of Khachaturian than there were for Leszek Pawlowicz on that "Kings Named Haakon 25th Anniversary Special" quiz I created on Alpaca Farm two years ago.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I'm pretty keen on geography and still had no hope on Meadows. I am disappointed that my submission of "L'Anse aux Calrissian" didn't seem good enough for a BWA, though. Am I missing something? I thought BWAs only show up at the end-of-season voting nowadays. Has that changed? I remember seeing the...

The Toronto Raptors win the 2019 NBA Championship over the Golden State Warriors 4 games to 2. This is the first championship for the franchise, and the first title for a Canadian team in one of the Big 4 sports leagues (NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL) since the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series in Octobe...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I have an econ degree and don't remember ever hearing the name David Ricardo. The 6% on grisaille I can believe, but I'm skeptical of 14% knowing Ricardo (especially with almost double that on the MCWA (among them, mine)). But my opponent thought I would, so I did manage to take down my rundle's le...

Re: Jeopardy! Players on the WQC Rankings

I assume that the Raghuveer Mukkamalla who scored 107 is the same guy who made the website for tips about how people who didn't grow up with quizbowl should prepare for Jeopardy!. I'm pretty sure that he recommended children's books as they had a lot of surface knowledge. I think he was on to someth...

I also got 100, and on the way home, I got trapped under a supercell and am waiting in a hotel lobby in Bowling Green, OH for the roads to be less flooded. I think that all the potential tornadoes have already passed. I now extremely regret taking the time to do some sightseeing in East Lansing and ...

Overtime should be having Jacques Bailly read a word in Romanized O'zbek, and having the kids write down how they think the word is spelled, including the apostrophes in the right places. That will weed them out quickly.

Re: Friday, May 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

One time, a blacksmith came to our synagogue and turned a sword into a plowshare and a spear into a pruning hook using methods that would've been known at that time period. It took about 45 minutes, IIRC.
