Re: Season 1 info

Does anyone know if I could find out when J! started airing on WHIO? I want to know whether or not I was actually watching Jerry Frankel's original run from my crib when I was approximately two weeks old.

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

The most unusual thing to happen to the White Sox in 2009 was not the perfect game, but Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko hitting back to back 300th career homers.

Re: Rule Change Effective 4/29/19 - No More FJ! Shout-Outs

I never really care that much, and am totally fine with personal messages. Outside of "What is Aleve?", none of them seem really memorable. You don't think "Sorry Cory, No Jag", "Turd Ferguson", or "Kebert Xela" were memorable? I've actually found quite a few of the joke responses enjoyable. I've s...

Re: Rule Change Effective 4/29/19 - No More FJ! Shout-Outs

I never really care that much, and am totally fine with personal messages. Outside of "What is Aleve?", none of them seem really memorable. I vaguely remember a story that there was an FJ where the answer was two out of the three of Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, and there were instruction...

Re: So...what have we learned so far from James Holzhauer?

It just dawned on me that the $250,000 given to the winner of the ToC is a minimum guarantee. It would be fun to see if James can break that on a two day, total point affair.

Re: J! and other notable contestants on The Chase (possible J! spoilers)

This may be a bit off-topic but I am curious, has anyone on here ever met or interacted with any of the UK or Australian Chasers? And I mean besides appearing as a contestant on this version. Anne Hegerty once proofread a one day tournament that I was going to write for 2020 quiz before it went dow...

Re: Friday, April 19, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Now that the new contestants for the week of 4/22 have been posted, I have a feeling that one of the contestants will just be wagering $4,000 on daily doubles and Final Jeopardy! if she has that much.

Re: Wednesday, April 10, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I agree that James has settled all question of whether he deserves to be ranked among the greatest of the superchamps. My question, for those of you know who keep track of such things, is how does James's average Coryat compare to the best ever? Here's everyone with an average Coryat of at least $2...

Re: The connection between a quiz bowl background and J! success

NAQT and ACF until 2005 or so were at least a third general knowledge/pop culture, and still had giveaways of "sound like" or "is an anagram of", among others. Most high school teams played various non-pyramidal quizbowl more than NAQT until 2010 or so. Around half of the states in the US were still...

Re: The connection between a quiz bowl background and J! success

I think that playing in the era where questions were transitioning from more wordplay/pop culture questions to more academic stuff is even more of a benefit. The people in that age cohort were also born around the time of the beginning of the Trebek version J! so we associate more of our memories wi...

I responded with Donald Glover for Q50 because I knew it was the guy from Community but didn't remember his rap artist name. Would that likely be accepted?

Re: Monday, April 8, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

James's run so far has reminded me of the Vosbergh era of Jeopardy!, and I love the relative lack of Lach trash. James is not only on pace to smash Austin Rodgers's record for most money won in the first five games, but he's also on pace to break Vosbergh benefactor Frank Spangenberg's record for f...

Re: Sony Reportedly Searching For Alex's Replacement

I think that Lauren Graham or Alexis Bledel would be good choices, since they've already shown that they can be on a show with fast-talking dialog with some academic and pop culture terms thrown in. Or, since Jeopardy! needs more STEM, maybe someone like Danica McKellar or Mayim Bialik. The Gilmore...

Re: Thursday, April 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

There was some talk a while ago about someone wagering $1,488 on FJ. If James had wagered $8,912 instead of $9,812 on his second DD and missed, he would've had $11,488. That being said, I'm sure that's a random coincidence and it will be interesting to see how well he does. EDIT: Apparently enough o...

Oklahoma is Midwest now? Not that I shouldn't have gotten the clue anyway, but that threw me off. ETA, after a bit of googling: There are people who don't consider the Dakotas to be Midwest? For real? I consider the Midwest to be Northwest Territory+rest of Minnesota, and thought that that was the ...
