Re: Thursday, September 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My one flub on the night was mixing up Canada's two "colorful" territorial capitals, Whitehorse (Yukon) and Yellowknife (Northwest Territories). Any ideas on a mnemonic device for those two? Y does not go with Y has worked for me over the years including today. That's always been my goto, as well.....

Re: Monday, September 9, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It was surprising to see the return of "athlete's foot" as a response to "tinea pedis." This was pretty much the same clue that Gilbert Collins had when going for his 5th win, as a Daily Double with a $2,000 bet. He got negged when he answered "ringworm." I was one of the opponents, and when we bro...

RTFQ!! Saw "Titicaca" first, and my morning brain could only see Latin South America. THEN I go on to read "Roman engineer emperor " in the next clue, which sent me so far off track that the useful "famous drawing" hint did me no good. (Some famous drawing of Augustus??) RTFQ!! (thankfully my rage i...

Re: 2019 ToC Predictions & Comments

A spreadsheet with stats for the 2019 ToC players: https://i.ibb.co/3csMvNj/ToC2019.jpg Lots of numbers mean many ways to have something wrong so please let me know if I need to correct anything. As is tradition I will sort the players into Gold, Silver or Bronze groups prior to the ToC taping. Nam...

Trivia Nationals Jeopardy Panel - August 9 2019

Definitely worth watching. As ever, Maggie is so fun! Can't get the <video> tag to work... here's the URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B95LaInsE0 [ETA fixed the URL] Highlights: at ~44:00, "we don't always finish the questions because..." blames triple stumpers and forrest bouncing, but no menti...

Re: Jeopardy 2019 North American Audition Tour

Nah, I just had an off day and I'm not as good at trivia as I need to be (like 4 questions behind Jeff last night - congrats! ). I missed stuff I knew, didn't know things I should, and ended up in the neighborhood of 40 right, when I should have 45+ to win a Jeopardy game. I think the passing score...

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

The Ukraine just had an election, where a party based on the TV show Servant of the people, led by the actor who played the prime minister president on the show, Volodymeyr Zelensky, won a majority of the seats in their parliament. No word yet on whether or not a West Wing party is being created in...

Well anyway, with the controversy dying down I'm gonna go ahead and make my tiers. No particular order. ... SIlver: Kyle Jones, Anneke Garcia, Rob Worman , Ryan Fenster, Francois Barcomb ... Rough draft for now. On the one hand, silver seems generous. (literally the lowest coryat of the bunch!) On ...

Re: Monday, July 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Don't tell anyone, but I have a little calculator hidden in there. In reality though, I just practiced doing quick math with different J! dollar amounts. For example, knowing that each column in double Jeopardy adds up to $6000, or that the bottom row is $12000 is super helpful. I only had to do th...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Always a chance, but I'm going to predict we'll see Emma in QF1 (whether that's a Monday or a Wednesday) and that we'll see James in the Thursday game (whether that's QF2 or QF4). No election year to work around, so I'd bet a standard two-week, Monday-Friday schedule will be followed this year, as ...

Re: Friday, June 7, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The FJ! clue had me almost make Steven's mistake as I saw Albert, converted it to Alberta and wrote Edmonton. Fortunately, Biff gave me a rap on the head, "Think McFly!" and I moved a step over to fully match everything in the clue. I definitely would've stopped at Edmonton just like Steven did. du...

Re: Wednesday, June 5, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I can't think of another FJ cat that would lend itself so well to using the intermission to mentally (or even writing down) the whole damn 26 likely responses. Ain't that the truth! In light of this, it seems a safe assumption that Erin probably didn't just run out of time working through Alfa,Brav...

63 of 63 would result in a Coryat of $54,000, which has never happened before.
so by extension, that means there's never even been a "60 right, 0 wrong" game.
(i.e., ignoring FJ success rate)

Re: Have any group of contestants ever gotten 63 of 63 answers?

63 of 66 has happened (every clue was questioned correctly, but there were three rebounds after incorrect responses were given): http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=1692 I have been telling people that "there has literally never been a perfect 63-right-and-0-wrong game of Jeopardy - the E...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I had to chuckle when panettone was a question yesterday. I first learned that word when it came up in the national spelling bee many years ago. I had that answer immediately but couldn't remember if panettone had all that fruit on top, so I changed it to "frangiapone", which is a nonsense word Any...

I eagerly await my regression back up to the mean! (I could hear Clapton singing every #$*% word of the first verse, but somehow couldn't get from "comin' for to carry me home..." back to the proper title. )

Easily my worst season start ever. But somehow, still fun. :)

18600 for James at the first break. Not bad for 15 clues.
Is that a record?
Yes, I believe so.

(fyi the best possible score at Break #1 - assuming they stop after clue #15, which happens to be the DD, is $24,000)
