Re: Thursday, January 9, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I might have gotten FJ anyway, but knowing that Mark Twain's novel Pudd'nhead Wilson (1894) treats fingerprinting as a recent development cinched it.

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 1 (1/7/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was surprised TCM fan extraordinaire Alex didn't call out Ken for his clearly inspired by Citizen Kane misstep of Xanadu for Hearst Castle.

Re: Monday, January 6, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Does Karen remind anyone else of Amy Adams? Yes and I mentioned it to my wife last week. FJ took me a couple seconds, but it was obvious once I thought of Catch-22. One of my favorite novels. Isn't Knute Rockne's first name pronounced ka-noot? Do they actually pronounce it "noot" in the movie? I ha...

Re: Monday, January 6, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Instaget FJ for one of my favorite novels. Here's the full quote for the curious: There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be gro...

Re: Friday, December 20, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was 4/5 in four categories in J! round today. Got all but the top box in both Santa Claus (completely drew a blank on Amsterdam) and Take my Rhyme (got disoriented and tried to rhyme with "rhyme" and not "take"). Conversely, all but the bottom box in both Stamp News and Stuff. I found First Name ...

Re: Thursday, December 5, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Usually I watch Jeopardy to relax but this was a stressful game all around. Kelly's insistence on using "please" had me worried we weren't going to get to all the clues, especially since they left the actor category for the end of the first round. I had to fast forward through the Goldblum category ...

Re: Wednesday, December 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The Amtrak conductors have always said Dowagiac as "duh-WAH-jack". Johnny had "DOW-a-jack". How did Bangladesh "make sense" in Bengal for $200? I bombed that category. I thought "hold that tiger" was out of line in the Tiger category. Felt like something specialized that way too few people would kn...

Re: Monday, December 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

NHO Greta Thunberg, nor do I see why I should. That seemed horribly out of place in the top box. There's really no reason to take this tone. Greta Thunberg attracted international attention this past summer for her climate change protests. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and addressed t...

Any reason I should know the Chicago riots were in 1968 and not any other years?

It's trivia. Any reason you shouldn't?

1968: LBJ decides not to run again, MLK shot, RFK shot, riots in Chicago at the Democratic convention.

Re: LL83: Learned League

I'm another one who ruled out heavy because heavier was in the question. Cost me a win and had to settle for a tie, but I can live with it. I answered Alabama because I came up with Selma and couldn't think of an Oscar winner for another city. At that time only Tennessee was accepted, so I googled H...

I'd like to second Alex's recommendation of My Favorite Year to everyone who hasn't seen it. (And judging by the Fourth Podium poll, that's a lot of you.) One of the great underrated comedies of all-time, with an utterly fantastic performance from Peter O'Toole.

Re: Tuesday, October 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Tried to dig deep for 1950s suspense/murder movies. "Rear Window" did flit through my mind, but I swatted it away as not quite jibing with "suspense" and left it blank. You swatted away a Hitchcock movie as not quite jibing with "suspense"? Hitchcock is filed in my brain under mystery and horror. S...

Re: Thursday, October 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Please, stop assuming that anything you don't know is an obscure fact. It simply isn't true. Why not just look at it as an opportunity to learn something new to you instead of complaining about it? Three contestants onstage didn't know it, nor did they act like they knew it. And a lot of people her...

This was another garbage clue on a hyper-obscure fact. Why are we getting Liederkranz'd this week? Please, stop assuming that anything you don't know is an obscure fact. It simply isn't true. Why not just look at it as an opportunity to learn something new to you instead of complaining about it?

Pre-called Scarlet O'Hara on FJ, very glad they went with something a little more off the beaten path. As a huge fan of detective fiction this was right up my alley, and since he's a TCM fan I bet Alex enjoyed the clue as well. Nick looked very familiar to me. Has he been on a game show before? Half...

I thought Springsteen was an ironic wrong answer because his bandmate Steven Van Zandt was the founder of Artists United Against Apartheid and was pretty severely critical of Graceland.

FJ was an Instaget for me because despite the controversy I love that album.

Re: Wednesday, October 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Hercule Poirot seemed obscure for the top box, especially relative to Sherlock Holmes at $400. In terms of books sold, Agatha Christie ranks below only Shakespeare and the Bible. She has been translated more than any other author. Hercule Poirot is her most famous creation, and has been featured in...
