;) ;) ;) ;) ;)   Ironically knew the GWTW thing because we had toured the Margaret Mitchell House in Atlanta over Labor Day weekend past, which had memorabilia related to the premiere. It also helped that the movie had hit the news that day regarding the HBO Max issue. And, alt...

Re: Wednesday, December 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

And they wouldn't even throw us a "holiday song" bone in the clue. Somehow, I got stuck on "The Larch" and couldn't get off it. Not sure if I would have come up it in September, when they likely taped this, but the English Yuletide song "The Holly and The Ivy" gave me an educated guess. I was think...

Re: Wednesday, June 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I bought my nephew a Viewmaster for Christmas a few years ago, so I am puzzled that Alex thinks all the contestants were too young to have received one. Viewmaster was once owned by GAF (because chemical companies selling toys was part of what was called diversification) and its spokesman was Henry...

Re: Monday, April 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The clue about "living people not being normally on stamps" reminds me of a story from a stamp store -- I was buying some supplies for my first wife, and she collected them. His comments were directed at stamps for milestones in the space program in the 1960. He said the Post Office / Postal Service...

Someone explain this FJ! to me? I looked up the airport and I don't see what DEL has to do with anything. All commercial airports have a three-letter IATA code, for instance LAX for Los Angeles International Airport, DFW for Dallas-Ft Worth International Airport, etc. If the airport is named after ...

Re: Previous J! contestants: Did you track money in real time?

Simply put -- hell no, other than at the natural breaks in play. There was too much going on with focusing on the board during game play to worry about the scores at the same time.

(Someone cue Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" here, please!)

Re: FJs for the 1/14/19 week

I was certain WWTBAM was the top show in 2000, so Regis was my immediate and only guess Friday but I was a bit perplexed by the "syndicated" part of the clue. I've always thought Live with... was an ABC show, but it turns out it is produced by WABC in New York, and while it airs on all ABC owned st...

I got all of the Star Wars ones right, but not by name -- I kept citing "Episode IV." etc. since I couldn't come up with the names fast enough. Would that have passed in Culver City or not?

I said My Fair Lady.
At least it's still Lerner and Loewe. "1947" and "Lerner and Loewe" made this an instaget, even without the picture.

It also helped that I've played in the pit orchestra for "Brigadoon."

"Words from the comics" was a good category for me as well. But, in an interesting aside, Kryptonite did not originate in the comic books, but on the radio version of The Adventures of Superman . Turned out that Bud Collyer, who voiced Supes, wanted a vacation, so they invented the substance that we...

My high school class got to see Amadeus at the Cineplex down the street. Easy FJ.
I might have gotten this off the date and Vienna reference, but having seen Amadeus years ago sealed it on the poisoning part (which I had never heard of otherwise).

Crazy thing is I precalled "sackbut" -- not because I realistically expected it, but it's fun to say.

When it showed up in the clue, Mrs. Spiff basically said "WTF?!?!?! How did you know that was going to be there?!?!?"

I have the tea leaves around 12/18 for 67% for the FJ! round with the percentage dropping when including the stage players. The clue is not as hard as those who missed it made it and it's not quite as easy as those who were done in mere seconds think it was. It's in between. Having seen the movie m...

Re: Wednesday, May 9, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I was curious about what opera Mary Alice was trying to get out at the end there, i.e., "La W ..."?? After a little research, my guess is "La Wally," which happens to have an Alpine setting as well. (Spoiler alert - things apparently end in an avalanche. Literally). So, while I thought she inadvert...

The four sections got it for me - I know the overture (for a non-musician). The storm and the calm were all staples of the old cartoons. And, of course, the famous last section.
^ This. Plus it helps that I have Spike Jones and the City Slickers on my playlists. :P
