Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread

I made it 8 losses in my last 9 matches on MD15, losing 2(3)-7(5), and sinking to 18th in the rundle. Will take an extended losing streak to drop any lower, as I have a 3-point lead on 19th place and a 7-point lead over the last place person in our division...but I'll need to turn things around to ...

FJ: Embarrassingly, I confidently stated Evita. Thought Les Miserables was much older.
Same here. It was a guess for me, but it seemed reasonable.
Me three. And even more embarrassingly, I've seen Les Mis at the theatre. Money well spent.

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread

My second year in Continental D. I finished tied for second in total correct answers (85), sole possession of second for total match points (116), and 5th in defensive efficiency (.708). And I finish 16th out of 28! At least I was vindicated by being named 23rd least lucky LLama. Congrats to ...

Hey Kevin,

Congrats on a great run! You were a killer on the buzzer and had quite a breadth of knowledge. Enjoy the new(ish) mini-van!

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread

I'm confused by all the convoluted ways to find the number of square inches in a square yard people used. Why didn't you just multiply 36 by 36? For some odd reason my opponent assigned a defense of 1 to that one (and zero to invisible hand, which I missed). I assume even those who are poor at math...

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread

Soooo, am I the only one who guessed barnacles for yesterday's Q6? Related to ships, mid-18th century -> Darwin, maybe the names were for their shapes (because I don't think they tend to appear on sails)? Clearly I need to spend more time with Sky Map. Constellations sure makes sense in retrospect,...

I chose my name as a living example of what happens when you like beer too much and let exercise fall out of your daily routine.

Re: Friday, December 30, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Some would argue this FJ has no correct answers. The "Nobel Prize in Economics" isn't, technically, a Nobel Prize. This is correct. The official name is the " Swedish National Bank's Prize In Economic Sciences In Memory Of Alfred Nobel." It's awarding in the Nobel ceremony is controversial, as econ...

FJ: Couldn't remember which of Bermuda or Bahamas were closer to the U.S. mainland. Finally guessed right. Thanks to Alex for his coda at the end of Cindy's run, congratulating her and informing non-regular J! viewers of her unique situation. Rightly or wrongly, I ruled Bermuda out since it's a ter...

Re: LL71: For The LLamas

My thought process on the language question: "that's Welsh. Or is it? That seems way too obvious if it is. I'll guess Esperanto." My opponent ended up giving me a 3, and I lost by one point  Also, I was debating between some combination of tin, copper, and zinc on the brass question. I went w...

Re: Buzzer Speed of Older Folks

You get plenty of time to work on this during rehearsal, so you will gain comfort with buzzing in...and even get the chance to find out which approach works for you. I don't think there's a universal best approach. I taped as a 40-year-old, and relied mostly on waiting for the lights. I found in reh...

Re: LL71: For The LLamas

Followed up a 1(1) with a 9(6). Being a chemist helped me out, as the nylon story is pretty well known. Had to guess pecan - the only way I got there was thinking that pecans are a southern U.S. nut, and the nuts were too oblong to be hazelnuts (somehow the shell reminded me of them). Hermitage was ...

Re: LL71: For The LLamas

This has been a horrible season for me. I am currently 6-11-1 in my D rundle and in the relegation zone. But I have just one fewer correct answer on the season (45-44) than the person in third place and have played better defense than he has. But I have "allowed" 54 correct answers to his 38. And h...

Re: LL71: For The LLamas

Never heard of the show "Suits." Guess I'm in the minority! Still hard to believe more than twice as many people got that right than the Iraq/Kuwait question. I didn't know about the border barrier zone there, but it seemed like a "what else could it be?" type question. I thought of the Balkan conf...
