Re: Thursday, May 24, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The quote they gave was the most famous excerpt from Kennedy's most famous speech -- an electric piece of oratory that resulted in something like a 45-minute standing ovation and completely overshadowed Carter's renomination. I think it was reasonable to expect contestants to recognize it. But I'm ...

Re: Tuesday, May 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Can someone provide me with the wording on the Whistler clue? I don't see the justification for the judges' overturning their ruling on Hermine's response of "nuit." Nuit is indeed a French word for "night," but Whistler didn't call the paintings in question "nuits." He called them "nocturnes." Whi...

Re: Tuesday, May 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I knew that 1837 + duel -> Pushkin; they gave the 1837 part, and calling someone a "cuckold" sure seems like it would have been sufficient grounds for a duel, so Pushkin it is. I negged with endomorphin for endorphin (or was it the other way around?) (and not for the first--nor probably last--time)....

Knew back pain <-> lumbago; adding the p and seeing "plumb" (lead) quickly confirmed it. Knew Ulysses designed the Trojan Horse, so was pretty confident with that + "pine." NHO basking shark.

I've attempted to learn Best Picture Winners = f(year) (still a work in progress). When doing this, it's hard to not notice that there are two films from 1942 on the list ( Mrs. Miniver and Casablanca ) and none from 1943. Needing to understand this inconsistency, I read up on it and learned of the...

Re: Friday, May 4, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Maybe most frustrating of all was "Young Hickory" as a nickname for Pierce when it's more commonly associated with Polk (or so it seems). I agree. I've always had "Young Hickory" <-> Polk, and J! has used this fact multiple times in the past. I can't imagine the writers wouldn't know this (?), so i...

45/50, from video (thanks, sherder!) Knowledge gaps: - David Bowie (Amy Winehouse, knowing it was wrong but unable to remember who died recently) - Seine (Rio de la Plata, NHO Trocadero, sounded Spanish-ish) - China (North Korea) Retrieval failures: - "This Is Us" (got as far as "Something Us") - ra...

40/50 from the video (thanks, sherder!) Or maybe 39/50--not sure if they'd take "spy lie" for "treason reason" Knowledge gaps: - The Alchemist (have heard the name; no idea what it's about) - Jessica Jones (NHO) - Giants - La Raza (heard of, didn't know the acronym) Retrieval failures: - Conway - cl...

I don't think neuron can be right, because it's just another word for nerve cell , which was in the clue. http://www.dictionary.com/browse/neuron It's almost as if the clue... uses other words to describe the answer that you're supposed to get. I'm fairly certain that "neuron" is the correct respon...

I’d like to see the wording of that question again. The East-West Schism of the 11th C is what is commonly referred to as the Great Schism. St. Thomas Aquinas died traveling to Lyon, France while attempting to heal this rift between the Latin & Greek churches Well that's just... odd. What was the b...

"Amuse bouche" was the subject of a question on HQ today. I got it wrong.
I got in on Jeopardy!, but also missed it on HQ (I seemed to remember it being brought out between courses, not before the appetizer--guess I need to get out to fancy restaurants a little more often!)
