Re: FJs for the 1/6/20 week

Have read Catch-22 multiple times; it and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The Crying of Lot 49 define ‘60s literature for me. I find the original movie adaptation of Catch-22 quite good overall and much better than I expected it to be, but the book is just brilliant; I am a big fan. (I seriousl...

Knew FJ was a soccer player, knew it was Ro-something...ended up with Rodolfo. :(
Sorry to see Karen go - low-key but plucky! At least we’ll se her again in the ToC.

Continue to be impressed with Karen. I’ll be surprised if this FJ polls over 50%. I kept thinking “a gemstone...a gemstone...Emerald?”; on the right track but the gemstone connection turned out to be the writer, not the supporting actress, and I had the wrong gemstone. Sigh. A good sole get by Karen.

Re: Tuesday, December 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Thanks for the analysis and a great concise explanation. I think I somehow exchanged consonants someplace along the line way back before these terms became fashionable in the common parlance. It may be an accident of my memory that the "t" version (geodetic) is even a word. I've not been exposed to...

Re: Tuesday, December 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

To riff on the geodesic clue, I said "geodetic", which I understand* as the shortest curve between two points in any number of dimensions. In the case of the curvature of the earth, which is quasi-analogous to the fourth dimension in space-time, this gives the great circle chord (since you can't ta...

That FBI category might have been too difficult for a Teen Tournament, and maybe even challenging for college students. I felt the clues were overly easy for regular J! contestants. Identify J. Edgar Hoover from a photo? Show James Earl Ray's mugshots & then spot them an April 1968 assasination? C'...

I haven’t been doing these for long, and I clearly suck at the reverse psychology needed to pick the least likely answer among the Boardie populace. (e.g., Beagle a singleton!)

Naming Hanford would have been a vicious clue I'd guess that would poll under 5%. Yes, it isn't worth a poll spot. The Hanford mention might even have increased this clue difficulty as most people haven't heard of it. I think asking for Los Alamos would have been a better clue. The only negbait is ...

All I could think of for FJ was “incarnation”, but it didn’t seem quite Sanskrit-derived (which it isn’t, after looking it up later - Middle English derived from Latin). But definition-wise, it’s an exact match 8-) Eh, "incarnation" means roughly "made flesh" not "descent." (The "carn" root has to ...

NHO The Alienist . Turns out it was adapted into a limited series on TNT in 2018, but there are so many of those these days that it's hard to keep up. And it was a very good show, too. Sadly, I couldn't pull up the name in time. The book is better. And I had trouble remembering the name of it, too....

Thought for a few seconds on FJ, remembered WT Sherman’s famous “if nominated I will not run; if elected, I will not serve” line, figured it was a good TOM, and went with it. Also got the “Lot’s wife” DD trash.
