Re: FJs for the 7/9/18 week

   :( :(  I guessed Deliverance on Thursday, which was published in 1970, so I can’t check the box. I’ve seen Jaws, but I momentarily forgot it was adapted from a novel. Sure you can. It meets the first part of the "or" statement.

Re: Tuesday, July 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

To be blunt, the type of person who has never shown any curiosity to where common expressions came from, is not someone who is going to succeed on Jeopardy! You have to know things, and you have to be capable of some deductible reasoning to fill in the gaps you don’t know. Blah blah blah vintager. ...

My addendum to Suzanne's response to Alex's early season rafting comment in the interview: Kudos to Suzanne for not correcting Alex. I rafted Grand Canyon 4 times. At the start of the second one, I got married. It doesn't matter when you raft, the water will be cold because it comes from the bottom ...

I know I'm late but have a question for the judges.

In WHO Essential Drugs, for the clue which basically looked for powdered activated this to treat poisoning I said carbon in lieu of charcoal. What do you think?

Re: Friday, June 29, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I pre-called the reversal for Annual Rate of Return, but TPTB were generous giving Revenue IMHO - that isn't a thing anyone would call ARR. The category name mentioned 'aa' and the abbr in the clue was "AAR" and spotted us "average annual". So that would turn the first two responses into average an...

Ooh, early 1790s, who famously died?

Instantly went to Jean-Paul Marat.

Ah, so peach was the key word. I thought the Masters was older than that though. But nothing else came to mind, so that's a get. A key word, though its importance escaped me first time around. Wasn't nearly necessary, though, because what sport is played among lots of trees, and of its big annual e...

Re: Monday, June 18, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

So from what I'm gathering that GDP clue was just a garbage clue? No There was nothing wrong with the clue, but it could have been made a bit clearer by putting "growth" or "increase" in the clue and therefore keying GDP as the correct response. Y? As you said, there was nothing wrong with the clue...

"This type of turtle". Wait, there's more than one? Can't say I've heard of a box turtle. Box, snapping, ninja... One day I'll make it to the Nixon birthplace...it's just up the street... Hah. We must be neighbors. I'm just a couple miles away, and haven't ever visited. It's on my list for this yea...

I got this FJ before Alex finished reading the clue, so I spent the think time watching the contestants, wondering "Do they know it's isthmus

We're lucky to have Turner Classic Movies, which plays at least one silent film a week, late Sunday nights. This week: Greed!

And then there's this!

I also thought the Rowling category was extremely YEKIOYD. I doubt anyone's gonna know the Snitch or Dementors unless they're a superdork who's read every book 500 times. I got the Snitch and Dementors without having read or watched a Harry Potter installment in its entirety. I knew the Snitch was ...

There's also the issue of the game being ruthlessly, horribly boring for most people under the age of 50. Obviously it's not for everyone, but those of us who enjoy the game don't think it's boring. Yes, I'd like to see the length of an average MLB game decrease, but I could say that about just abo...

Re: Monday, April 9, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

For the FJ, I was thinking of somebody who took the oath of office for VP and then, 14 months later, took the oath of office for President. This satisfies the wording of the clue... I was tripped up identically , and far too late I decided that "VP, then president" does NOT satisty the clue's wordi...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Again, most of NY involves going west, even if you do go north first. This one's simple: if it isn't NYC or Long Island, it's upstate. So, basically 97% of New York is considered upstate. Then why call it "upstate" and not something else entirely? That'd be like calling the non-St. Louis parts of M...

8/8 second week in a row! I didn’t know the volcanoes in Lake Nicaragua but I know The Rolling Stones played a benefit concert in 1973 or so after an eruption ruined Managua. I think I’ll do well this coming week unless they ask about really recent music or some awful CW tv show. Kudos on the perfe...

FJ get rate might be higher for us on this board, but for contestants, 50/50 sounds about right. I wonder if a mod could pull the data from the weekly polls to see what the board averages. I looked over my own results for the first 13 weeks of this year and had 48 correct out of 65 clues (I exclude...
