Re: TD 424 - Closing Time

Thanks for the quiz! I did not see a requirement to specify which choice belongs to my answer, but I added the interstate number for the state I chose, and so on for most of them. It might help others if you declare that no letter or detail is needed. It also gives better odds for a lucky guess on t...

Said Sydney for Melbourne- still don't get the name connection to William Lamb You didn't need to know Lamb to get this one; just the Port Phillip Bay connection, which appeared in the $2K Birthplaces clue on J! just last Tuesday. http://j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6318&highlight=melbourne C...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

On the Mythology one, I rejected sorority and tried to make Pleiades work with 9 instead of seven sisters. Of course there are only 6 stars in the Pleiades noticeably brighter than the others. And those 6 stars form the symbol for what auto manufacturer? Subaru, which IIRC means Pleiades in Japanes...

  :(  :( :( Grave scene? Go with the play with "Death" in the name. Indian sounding named poet and landmark? I only got one guess, and teardrop seems cromulent. (One of my favorite sitcom lines was a zinger about "when you bend over in those orange(?) p...

3) Went with Distance and Ranging for the miss. Detection and Reconnaissance here. We should join forces. Detection and Reflection here. The answer doesn't quite resonate with me, and these constructs and acronyms are something I usually latch onto. (my fave is still the old "TWAIN" term from compu...

It’s interesting to read the discussion here. I briefly considered polio as an alternative to smallpox, but discarded it since there are ongoing cases elsewhere in the world. Then again, I work in the area of infectious disease. And, yeah, I hope that those people who complained about James making ...

Re: Thursday, June 13, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I didn't think of FUBAR but did think of SNAFU, which I might have put down in desperation if I hadn't already thought of glitch. Both my wife and I had SNAFU. I put that down right away and tried to think of something better for the rest of the time, but "glitch" never came to me. I read "The Righ...

Here is a famous E.J. for fans of the sport: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._J._Tackett Add EJ Dionne of the Washington Post. Frequently on NPR All Things Considered as political commentator on the week's events with David Brooks. I'm more likely to treat the next occurrence as a "vuja de" - I've ...

Re: Wednesday, June 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Sorry to see the forklift driver go. It was a pitched battle at the end. I felt bad for E.J. but come on - the veto clue was a gift. He must have been thrown by not knowing there actually is a physical document - I didn't know either. My instant thought was of what I now know is a stereoscope. My gr...

Re: Tuesday, June 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I don't think I've posted since my heartbreak at Emma's loss. I wanted her to make Alex forget about King James. I rooted for Martin the school teacher but was conflicted about choosing between him and Dan the forklift driver. We need more real people and fewer attorneys and business professionals. ...

:( :(  :( :( :( :( No hope on Monday. Guessed Italy on the time zone, assuming Earth's rotation doesn't really apply to Italians. Worked from the physics, not the alphabet and picked Roentgen and the X-ray, but considered Gamma ray but know that the code word is "Golf". Couldn't s...

Re: Wednesday, June 5, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I've been looking for ANY contestant to make a comment like that for a long, long time. My favorite would be if a contestant had $200 from getting the first clue of the game, hit the DD on the next clue and said, "I'd like to make this a daily sextuple, Alex". The most extreme case (and there isn't...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I started out with Dalai as the first entry but scratched that because I knew the Panchen Lama was the second highest ranking. From there I thought “what else gets Tibetan/Nepalese names?” and also recognized a few of those names. That's what I thought, too, but Lhotse kept smacking me, telling me ...

Thanks for sharing and putting it out there, and you may get constructive comments. I can't offer m...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

(To go into FJ with $11000 against James Holzhauer AND the woman who beat him is an amazing accomplishment.) Apologies for the threadjack, but I had this thought - imagine if Emma runs off about 20 or 30 games and being able to claim you were the third tenor in this ensemble? Talk about a bad draw!

For those of you who missed it, here's Emma's awesome reaction to the suggestion that she's copying James's moves: https://youtu.be/v0ElzfISMpw That was weird. As others have pointed out - she beat him in the first game she saw him and he didn't deploy any big time bets. And the question at the int...

Anyhow, it can't be just beginner's luck as all 18 of us are beginners. I've concluded that it is my most awesome flag (which is my new avatar here) that intimidates my fellow rooks. But like a junkball pitcher, I'm sure they will light me up here in the second trimester :). It's enjoyable to be pa...

Re: Monday, June 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Recently Nate got roasted, and rightfully so, for not wagering near enough to ensure the lead going into FJ. Emma was in the almost exact same position. Of course she won't get the same comments as Nate because the game played out differently. Even after that DD, James was probably still the mathem...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

After my seventh game of the rookie season, I probably should stay clam here, but I think my rundle status is at it's zenith so this is my virgin post as a competitor. I seem to be punching way above my weight to be in sixth place (of 18 in Taiga R Div. 2) with only 17 correct answers in 7 games for...
