I assume "dulcet" is a no-go on Speak Softly for $600?
FWIW, I also said "dulcet"

5/5. I don't keep careful enough records to know how I would have done from the fourth podium on Thursday.

I have performed in a production of Fiddler on the Roof. Still missed the question.

I came up with the right response for this FJ! only after pausing the DVR for about a minute and a half. :(

FJ—Instaget. Plains state=Kansas and gem=emerald (or ruby, which is what I thought of first) Not ruby. They were silver in the book. I immediately guessed "Wizard of Oz", but then almost changed my mind, because I knew the slippers were only ruby in the movie, completely forgetting the Emerald city .

"Vibrations" seemed like a very poorly pinned clue with two "close but no cigar" negs.
I agree. I knew (or at least thought I knew) what they were going for, but I don't see what in the clue made "vibrations" the only correct response.

I am in exactly the same boat (so to speak). :D

I got the final, but with low confidence, thinking that it might have been Mengele, or a third guy whose name I couldn't come up with.

I'm going to admit that I choked on the tie-breaker. I misread the clue and responded with the name of the second lightest of the noble gases.

Re: Tuesday, July 9, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

only leonidas i have heard of is a filipino poker player (toto) with that as his surname There's also Leonidas of Rhodes, hero of four Olympic meetings. Pheidippides was the only other name that came to my mind, but he was at best a border-line hero and Marathon was a plain. And American Civil War ...

It took me a few seconds to put the pieces together, but I got Leonidas without much difficulty. I don't understand all the guesses of mythical people when we were given a date of death in historical times.

I was not spoiled for Monday's game. I don't do any form of "social media", and purposely stayed away from the "breach of confidentiality" thread. The mere existence of that thread was not enough to make me suspect any one day was more likely than another to be James's last.

I didn't know there was just a "New York Harbor".
I don't blame you for this. It always sounds too generic to me, too.

On another topic, I always have to flip a mental coin on Bren/Sten gun. Fortunately, on this clue, the coin came down right.

I started with Woody Guthrie and stuck with him. I only very briefly considered Seeger. But I thought long and hard about whether it might be someone like Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter.

Does anybody else think Jonathan should have been negged for "Dr Scholl's"? The clue asked for "this doctor", and the doctor's name was just "Scholl". Or is there a precedent for allowing the possessive in cases like this?

In retrospect I can identify work done by Alfred, Lionel, and Randy, but never knew they were related. Went with Barrymore knowing it was wrong, but unable to come up anything better, largely, I suppose, because I was fixated on actors or directors.

I have always found it hard to understand - or even to focus on - many lyrics of most pop songs.
This. Except for me it's just "most songs". As a result of this and my age I went 1/5 in that category, getting only the Midler.

In the now lost first draft of Hamlet, Hamlet tells Ophelia "Get thee to a nunnery." Ophelia asks how she should get there. Hamlet says "take thee a train" :D

Re: Friday, May 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Way (way!) back when I first learned to read my parents had some sort of upholstery or curtain fabric decorated in a skiing motif, with the names of various ski resorts on it. And I remember thinking that "Sun Valley" seemed a strange name for a ski resort. So there was no way I was missing this FJ!
