Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Oh, man - you stressed me out at John Bardeen! I did think Hans Bethe had a pair of physics Nobels as well. . OK, the cat thing is hilarious! But then, our 3 outside cats each have their own pet heating pad, turndown maid service, and a space heater running in their little cat outbuilding. So, yes,...

I love cookies, but only got 3/5. Didn't get the animal crackers of Chips Ahoy (blech).
Made me think of somebody's line (Steven Wright, maybe): "Had to throw away a brand new package of animal crackers. It said 'Do Not Eat if Seal is Broken.' I tore open the cellophane, and sure enough....."

Re: Monday, November 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Opus being the singular form of opera is a datum worth remembering. This is true pretty much regardless of your criteria. There will be no need for an erratum regarding this post. Nor will there be a correction in any of the appendices or indices. A touching reply that brought a tear to my eye. Now...

LOTF was an involuntary precall; still I can't quite believe they dipped into that well yet again...
I suppose Maggie was thinking of a different kind of shell. Glad nobody guessed All Quiet on the Western Front... ;)
That last Remarque was uncalled for.

  :(     Had heard of the Broadway play but best I could come up with was "Hello Evan ..... somebody". One word out of three doesn't cut it, even though I had the right play. Most of the others were pretty straightforward, though "Domes...

And yes, there are optimal wagers in Jeopardy. That's what game theory is all about. Unfortunately, "optimal actions" in classical game theory assume that the opponent is acting in his/her own best interest. That's why masters sometimes hate playing against tyros -- the master almost always wins, b...

Three good weeks in a row, followed by one that makes me glad I'm not prone to cockiness.

At least I matched the defending champ with "Rhine and Elbe."

Re: Trebek, Sajak, White re-up for two additional years

In 2022, I expect to see hundreds of clickbait articles about their supposed retirements. In all seriousness, I expect to see a few more years out of both hosts yet. When Barker was in his last few years of TPIR I felt that he was frail, curmudgeonly, and forgetful (and that's even before I get int...

Will miss rooting for Emily -- she was fun to watch. So was Jonathon; it will be interesting to see if he has an extended run. For the Butch Cassidy DD, I immediately responded with "Hole-in-the-Wall Gang," then when the answer of "Wild Bunch" was revealed did my traditional forehead slap. If Peckin...

Re: Trebek, Sajak, White re-up for two additional years

pretty lame...really thought next year was going to be trebek's last year Lame because Trebek stated publicly that he would mostly likely retire? Or lame because you wanted Megyn Kelly to take over? lame because i must endure him for another few years...no idea who that kelly person is I think the ...

Re: Thursday, November 1, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm glad I made it on J! when I was 51. I'm now 57, and I'm having more frequent responses such as the one for Turow: "It's not Grisham. It's the other one, the one who also wrote the book that was made into the movie about the guy." I was exactly correct, given that the movie was Reversal of Fortu...

I’m so old, I remember when the Red Sox didn’t win the World Series every couple of years.

Re: Friday, October 26, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Doing my part to keep the FJ! clue imperfect I wrote Blarney Stone. Did my part to help. It was my bad timing to have made a silly joke about the Blarney Stone in a different thread a couple of hours before I watched the game, so it was way too fresh in my mind. If I hadn't been thinking about the ...

I never met a Pavlov I didn't like: early 1900s + humorist = Will Rogers 1934 humorist could be Dorothy Parker - or conceivably Robert Benchley, though I don't see him as a response in Jeopardy since 2005...Humorist mentioning party politics, that's Will Rogers... Re: FJs for the 10/15/18 week

I must disagree. There's a substantial difference between having 1 chance to win $50 million and 10 chances to win 1/10 of $500 million. Pooling is definitely the way to go on large payouts, especially given the very, very long odds. Or be selfish and just buy ten tickets just for yourself. As long...

Re: FJs for the 10/15/18 week

As for the Powerball and Mega Millions drawings, pot odds say you should play when the prize hits $650 million. The "raw" odds, perhaps, though my hunch is that factoring in the probability of multiple winners splitting the pot would reduce the expected value to the point where it would still be a ...
