Re: LL79: For the LLamas

This is my 13th LL season...but for the first time ever, I sit at the top of a rundle after a 6(4)-1(1) opening day win for LL79. I know it won't last...but seeing my name at the top of the list...and seeing my flag represented on the main page for rundle leaders after the first day...feels great. ...

Re: Wednesday, November 14, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I have to say it was very fair of the show to use this FJ in a winner-take-all round.

Re: Should the Teen Tournament Winner Get a TOC Invite?

I voted yes. At any rate, I think it's a better use of a spot than the Teachers' Tourney champ (who also have got used to dumbed down material). As some have here noted, the winners are sometimes pretty good. The rest can study.

 :( :(     No real idea on Tuesday, but V1 seemed to have that buzz. I liked an old FJ that asked what calendar date saw the greatest sales of avocados each year.

Btw, I just noticed that Cinco de Mayo is antipodal to Guy Fawkes day. Good scheduling.

Re: FJs for the 10/22/18 week

Got all but Zymase. I do wonder why they didn't instead write a clue asking for Zymurgy? It's a later entry for one thing, and "from aardvark to zymurgy" is a familiar phrase, as witness episode 55 of "My Name's McGooley, What's Yours?" in 1967.

Re: Thursday, October 25, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm astounded that two players didn't take note of the "two word" stipulation on the FJ! clue. They did say "the" and "an". I checked wikipedia to see if the oriole was any other state's bird (to strengthen the argument hinted at above), but nope. I wonder if either or both players had heard (as wa...

Re: Wednesday, October 24, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Bloemfontein came up in an FJ in the fairly early days of the Trebek era; first decade, I would guess. Something like "Of South Africa's three capitals, the one in the geographic middle of the country". I'm pretty sure I posted something similar here after the 2017 game, as it seems the sort of thin...

I said salve as well. Then I wasn't sure if it would be counted correct since it didn't really fit the hint of "You're the balm (bomb)." I've never heard anyone say someone was [something that sounds kinda like salve].
Salvy I have been called, but never simply the salve.

Re: Thursday, October 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'd always assumed "Brigadoon" was a play on "rigadoon", not that I ever thought about it much, or knew what a "rigadoon" was (it's a baroque dance of Provençal French origin, popular in Louis XIV's day).

Re: Monday, October 8, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Solomon was the first name to pop into my head, but Moses was second, which was good enough. Mosaic law, you know. I wonder if the similarity of "Solomon" to "Solon" quietly nudged some people that way.

 :(  :( I voted "confused" on the hyphenate question, though I was confused only briefly (well, fairly briefly). Though Daniel Day-Lewis is an enormously incorrect response, it's a tough one to get out of one's head once in. In any case, I did, remembering "Good Will Hunt...

Re: FJs for the 9/24/18 week

I had been reading about it the day before, so I answered Look Back in Anger . At the time, it seemed the logical thing to do. I never read Pygmalion , but I saw the 1938 film adaptation. I don't recall if that line was included. Perhaps a bit obscure for FJ today, but I do recall it coming up once...

After answering "Anita Jones" I wondered if maybe it was Alyssa, but I told myself Alyssa wasn't such a popular name in those days. But who names their kid Anissa? No wonder she turned to drugs. I guess I should just have said "Jones", Ken Jennings-style but I'm hoping this way the name sticks till ...
