Re: FJ Poll for 2/8/2019

Link don't work. Looks like if you don't provide the http:// or https:// then JBoard's software assumes your URL is a local link and adds a https://jboard.tv/ in front. Interesting. Here's the URL I think you mean (complete with a snazzy suffix that takes us straight to the FJ): http://www.j-archiv...

Re: FJ Poll for 2/8/2019

I had guessed Much Ado, and I voted now for "tough but fair", as I don't see anything unfair about it, but I wouldn't call it a ToC-level clue because I think it's too hard for ToC. I don't want to say it shouldn't be asked anywhere, because it might be right for a Shakespeare scholars' tourney, and...

:(   :(  :( I had no idea Grey's Anatomy was still on the air; Scrubs was the only recentish medical show that occurred to me. Have never caught any of either. I remembered that there is a reference to "the Bermoothes" in the Tempest. The most promising...

Re: Toughest FJ! clues Season 32 (9/14/15 - 7/29/16)

I voted for Kelly (probably my pick if I have only one), Clooney and Bolivia. Even though it's not hard to imagine a world where I know Clooney and Bolivia were right, this isn't that world, and I didn't and wasn't going to guess them. I might have picked Pantheon too, probably should have had it am...

Re: Wednesday, February 13, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Susie could have solved the FJ! clue and 14600 would have bested Eric’s 14300. If Eric had bet to cover Seth by a buck then Eric would have fallen to 14599. Nice wager by Susie and she deserves the $2000 for second place. I don't begrudge her second prize, but I'm certainly not a fan of her bet. Ha...

Instaget for me and I was very surprised it was a triple stumper. I don't like poetry or musicals. :D
That's why it's good when they come together. Lets you kill two birds with one stone.

    :(   I thought the movie question was neat. I hope we don't have to study nautical borders now, but I did remember that Denmark juts above Germany, and that you can almost walk to Sweden from it. Looking for a point of entry into th...

May I be a little off-topic and off-color at the same time? Just this once, to kill both birds with one stone. Also it's the next day and hardly anyone is looking at this thread anymore.

Re: Monday, February 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I remembered the Charlotte's Web line from this game, and I see this is at least second time it has appeared as a second row clue. In this instance, the top two clues are former FJ's. Seems pretty sad, like John Quincy Adams moving from the presidency to the House, but I guess it's a way of staying ...

Got FJ just from "1840's", everything else was just noise. :geek: I knew Uranus was discovered in the 18th century, and Pluto in the 20th, so backed into Neptune from that. "Oceanus" just confirmed it. Yeah, one new planet a century I can just about keep up with. Interesting to learn about this Le ...

Instaget for me, as Dorothy Parker is said to have written one of the two poems I have memorized: “I like to have a martini, Two at the very most. After three I'm under the table, after four I'm under my host.” ...Though almost certainly a misattribution. For one thing, it doesn't scan. Would you s...

I don't know who Dorothy Parker is but have seen the name. I actually thought she was a gossip columnist. Perhaps you're thinking of Dorothy Kilgallen? Also of "What's My Line?" fame. Dorothy Parker A clever remarker Ensured her renown By writing things down. Alexander Woollcott, author of the FJ q...

This was not my first exposure to the scene, but a little reinforcement never hurts. The first time would have been when I saw that film with George C. Scott back in the 70s, and don't read ahead if your heart is still intact but that dog didn't actually survive. It was just a fake Hollywood happy ...

FJ was another WECIB. Not all that surprising an observation from the man who wrote "The Devil's Dictionary". Not sure what you mean; I'd certainly take it for praise, and it seems to have been. On the other hand, the work quoted here (Robert H. Davis's entry) suggests the quote either wa...

New York was massive negbait for Andy Warhol, but PA was the obvious choice if you knew that he was Lemko and Ruthenian Catholic (an association that should be easy enough to make for anyone who has seen The Deer Hunter ). I thought "he's from PIttsburgh" was a bit snide on Alex's part. After all, ...

Blair seemed to be close enough to my age, and has the most name recognition of PM's since Maggie because of the bromance with GWB.
Yeah, maybe it's the slacker in me, but I figured that Blair was the only post-Thatcher ex-PM we'd still be expected to remember for FJ.
