Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I scored with "provencal". It was a pretty proud get for me, marred only slightly by the high get rate. Don't know much about this sort of thing but I used to order the burger Provencal from a particular French restaurant that I used to occasional. Nike was my first instinct for a "Jumpman", but the...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Was anyone else helped on the sial question by having seen the sima clue in the Ryan Fenster rerun on Thursday? I got my second 9(6) in a row, much needed to stave off relegation. This one felt far less precarious than yesterday's, in which I had three guesses turn out correct (against JenningsK, w...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Breathed a sigh of relief on seeing that "Crohn" was right. I was nervous about Colitis, since the question said the physician's name was the disease's name. Also, there was nothing in the clue to suggest that the namesake doctor was more worthy than the other two, so perhaps it was just coincidence...

Re: Wednesday, June 10, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

FJ! was an instaget for me, though my lack of knowledge may have helped. I just saw “Late 19th century British biologist” and immediately locked in on Darwin. Never considered anyone else. Something I've learned over and over about FJ, but failed on today: if nothing in the clue leads you away from...

Spoiled on slake vs. quench. I suppose I'd have picked one or the other.

Not perfect; missed the most missed of last week's.

Re: Tuesday, June 2, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought of AK and HI right away and quickly dismissed them... I should have paid more attention to "last voyage" in the clue than to "NW Passage." (Though come to think of it, a comma after "last voyage" would have clarified that it was his last voyage of all ...) If you know Cook died in ...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

A Taiga is tearing me a new one this year. In my familiar relegation spot, waiting to go back to B. Is there a word for those of us that alternate rundles almost every season? Yoyos (I'm just making that up) I've seen that term used in baseball for a player constantly shuttling between the major le...

I was unsure if they wanted a particular thing now gaining in popularity (podcast?) or a general term. "Lollapalooza" sounded at least like it could be a Barnum coinage. No idea about the bird boo...

Re: Friday, May 29, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I seem to remember noticing a very slight pause by Alex when the response "Desalinization" was given... Maybe Alex was getting a judge-approval signal and they were actually originally *looking* for the response to be "Distillation". I noticed that too and wondered whether that was the reason. It m...

FJ! was an instawrite, but I just didn't feel comfortable. Even the cadence of "Fe fi fo fum" didn't seem to go along with the next line...but I put it down as a WECIB. Characters who get eaten are basically Jack and Little Red Riding Hood...incidentally, both characters in Sondheim's Into the Wood...

Also, Idaho=I don’t know. (My guess).
Yes, as in "If Mississippi wears her New Jersey, what will Delaware?" In this case, it would be "Idaho. Alaska", but there's not always anyone or anything to ask.

Perhaps its been a while for some of you.

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

So, I learned something worth noting and remembering. Heard of the term Jacobean, but had no idea what it referred to, so never would have come up with it. Answered "Stuart" for having no better guess, though the construction is clearly not parallel with Jacobean, Elizabethan, Jamesian, Victorian. ...
