Re: Friday, December 6, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I guess the Austria people were thinking of Schwarzenegger as Conan the Barbarian. Makes a bit more sense now. Anyway, I'm sure Monaco had its share of barbarians. They don't like paying taxes any more than you or I.

3 previous clue uses for the FJ! clue material: #6180, aired 2011-06-24 IN THE BEGINNING $800: In 1939 a Montgomery Ward copywriter wrote this story that was handed out to children in the store for Xmas #4357, aired 2003-07-08 HONKERS $200: It seems the legend of this ninth reindeer may last longer...

Re: LL83: Learned League

I wavered all day (that is, between doing other things) between Oprah and Martha Stewart. I decided Oprah had too much dignity for a couple of those titles. I considered that "probably" better known for other media might be ironic understatement, but I didn't think Thorsten would mislead me that way...

Re: Fourth Podium Poll for 12/3/2019 (SPOILERS)

I just feel like posting this. The Al Hirschfeld Theatre used to be the Martin Beck, which is also the name of the hero in a series of detective novels by the Swedish writers Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. It's the theatre Katharine Hepburn was acting in when she inspired Dorothy Parker (author of this...

I realized also I didn't know the difference between corundum and carborundum (aluminum oxide and silicon carbide; now I know. And the latter is used to fake diamonds). Maybe you are thinking of cubic zirconia for the faux diamonds? SiC is an incredible, and completely man-made material widely used...

Re: Wednesday, November 27, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

In the JOSHUA category, would they have taken French & Indian War for Seven Years War? And how should anyone know Petersburg is in Virginia? The French and Indian War (which was my answer too) was the American theater of the Seven Years' War. So it doesn't count. For Petersburg: my strategy for kno...

Re: Fourth Podium Poll for 12/2/2019 (SPOILERS)

I count $11,000 for me.

I have heard of Greta Thunberg, and even took the trouble to learn her name, so I was disappointed to count only $200 for her, while the guy who fynished wrytng his "Tales" around 1400 was worth a thousand. But I guess he is from before our players' time.

Re: Tuesday, December 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got as far as Dorothy Parker's Round Table. Probably not enough, but... judges? I agree, probably not. It doesn't seem as good as "Alex on Family Ties" (which didn't fly) for the 80s sitcom character. Algonquin seems fine without the Round Table. It covers the "New York" aspect and since the hote...

I got 99 problems, and this FJ is one... Yes, I put down the wrong number...very bummed now that I know the number wasn't required...Any chance they were told in advance they didn't need one? It seems odd that neither Alex nor Muhammed attempted it. 95 Theses is the standard way of referring...

Re: Monday, December 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

As far as FJ!...an instaget for me, followed by 29 seconds of heartburn, wondering if I had to have the NUMBER in my answer, or if just "What are Martin Luther's theses" was sufficient. No way was I ever going to pull out the number 95. (Honestly, he couldn't have come up with 5 more for an even hu...

    :( :( :( Ivanhoe on Friday. If I'd thought of Dracula (shouldn't they have used him on Halloween?), "British" would have exorcised him from my mind. I appreciate that the novel is tough to categorize (1897 being so late in the 19th century, and "goth...

Re: Tuesday, November 26, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

On this clue... More than 950,000 square miles: this sea that touches Africa & Asia, among others I said "Arabian Sea" and counted myself wrong. However, it is greater than 950,000 sq mi and touches Asia and Africa. Does the "among others" keep me from being able to check the box? I doubt they'd ha...

Re: LL83: Learned League

In this case, I had nothing better than isosceles, which I’d only ever seen in the context of triangles, and only knew of one British General in the Revolutionary War, so put Cornwallis with dim hope for success. Ditto for the trapezoid, but I couldn't come up with anything better. The on...

Re: Techniques for Memorizing and Reinforcing Trivial Facts

I was also about to say I wouldn't recommend that 'AEC' bit to others. Also, it's more traditional to arrange from oldest to youngest (and yes, there is still who wrote what). For myself, I remember Aristotle vs. Plato with the thought that it would be neat if it were Aristotle who founded the Acade...

Re: LL83: Learned League

I misspelled "Mersenne" (added an I), so maybe helped prevent it's being MCWA. Had no idea on the sports Q yesterday, but golf was my first guess. So of course I spent a bunch of time trying to think what else it could be, settling on baseball because of the College World Series in Nebraska. Turned ...

Re: LL83: Learned League

The best I could figure on the Grimm question was that the boy had gone out to learn his name. "His name' from me too. I didn't read the water question carefully enough to be put off by "heavier". I might just stick with this method. I guessed Tennessee knowing Nashvile and thinking Memphis likely ...
