Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

Out with my customary whimper, finishing on the wronger side of a 2(2)-3(2). Of the four Alcott girls, Amy is the only one that isn't (probably) a nickname. I wonder if that was meant to be important. I didn't think so. Still, I can't complain about a last-chance one-in-four shot on a clue with thre...

Re: Wednesday, September 23, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Did anyone else hear Lisa pronounce Edward Murrow's name as "Morrow?" I was expecting a reversal for that. I thought I heard "Morrow" too. That’s what I heard too, but I’m sort of ok letting it go; it’s a pretty fine distinction. OTOH, maybe Alex should have asked her to repeat it. They seem both t...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

The "happiness" clue was the clincher for me, but I was leaning toward Bonheur already because both paintings were unfamiliar. I think I've picked up more about Morisot because she's often covered with the other impressionists. I was a bit annoyed not to have been zeroed on Hell's Kitchen (given my ...

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

"Tiramisù was invented in this country." "What is it?" "Correct!" That's awesome. On further thought, I wouldn't really like to expand the list of acceptable two-letter abbreviations, mainly due to the scribble issue. State postal codes are troublesome enough; I can remember cases where I felt a co...

For FJ I actually put Cabrini down first and then switched it to Montessori.
My mother went to school with Cabrini, though not home, because Cabrini had already gone home.

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

There should be no controversy with respect to Tyler, but there should be a controversy with regard to Reshima. Are abbreviations no longer being accepted? That is a good question. What history has "th" for "Thailand" have, pre- internet codes? I think internet codes deserve as much respect as stat...

Spoiler for Friday's FJ
what the "dome" was in Rime of the Ancient Mariner. at me.
(not much of a spoiler for Friday, but maybe very slightly)
It's sort of the epigraph to Citizen Kane, just after the opening newsreel segment, I think. Then if you glide to the end, another little trivia flower will bloom.

Lady Gaga had a song called Judas in 2011, a likely reason for that bump even if the name still barely registered.
There may be the germ of an FJ there.

There were two Jameses? Yep. Also two Judases but for some reason they didn't BMS Judas. It's strange that people don't seem to name their kids Judas lately. I've cribbed the paragraph below from everything-birthday.com (here's the link if you want to see for yourself). I apologize for its poor pun...

     ---   --- I'd be happy if the show didn't regard "Berry" and "Barry" as homophones. My memory, though, is that it does, so, bad ruling. I was pretty confident about Rivera, though I didn't know either of the other two name...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

What time do the new questions typically get posted? I've seen them as early as shortly after 2 AM (ET) and as late as 3:30, but usually in the 2:30-3:00 range. It seems to me that while 2 AM Eastern used to be the typical time for the new day's questions, these days it is just about 3 AM. Probably...

Re: Monday, May 13, 2002 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Good game. Can’t wait until tomorrow to see who wins. I've got a good feeling about Eric. It's my understanding that very often the player in a distant third comes back to win the whole thing. That's right, especially because first and second place have to guard against each other. I remember readi...

I'll say it. During Dan's original Jeopardy run, I felt I was watching an old man. Watching him just now, he seemed like a cherub.

There are a lot of positions I don’t get voting for. Why do we elect a sheriff but not the police chief? Or vote for a coroner. The coroner is a partisan position here. Does one’s political views effect how you judge a cause of death? Do candidates for coroner get out there and campaign? Shaking ha...

Re: Wednesday, May 1, 2002 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I remember reading somewhere where Frank thought and thought afterward and concluded that he simply had never heard of Kim Philby. I first knew of him from his obit in the New York Times. I later read "My Secret War" which was a waste of time (for me) and 48¢ (of mine). He implausibly claims not to ...

Re: FJs for the 7/20/20 rerun week

Saw them all, and got all the FJs this time. First time around, I'd have included the incorrect day of the week, and I had no idea about Delaware. Wasserstein was the one playwright I knew then but I could have added the others this time. I remember Alex saying (some early season) that each year (in...

When I watched this game, I thought the trick was to figure which day of the week.

Would have been a tough way to lose.
