Re: Wednesday, December 1, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

[add] Please don't ever have "Pronounce It the Way We Want" as a category again. :x [/add] I was surprised at how well it went; I envisioned a fiasco. I also liked the writers with style category (though Dr. Seuss was too abstruse). I also guessed Schengen was Dutch, based on "Scheve...

Nice going, MC. Too bad things didn't break a bit differently, but at least you left no rounds in the chamber. I haven't seen much of the public reaction but speaking for me, I want to see blood and guts on the stage and the three of you left us plenty to savor. I wonder if they'd have used such a g...

Re: Monday, November 29, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm more often critical than laudatory of the writers, so let me laud them for writing "150th anniversary" and not "150-year anniversary". I liked Andrea's response of puppets to the puppets clue. Marionettes on strings is redundant, after all. Never heard of the 1975. On the oth...

I didn’t know Ken grew up in Korea. Interesting. Wonder if his parents were LDS missionaries. Yes. His father posted some on the old board during Ken's original run. He cited Ken's having grown up abroad as a reason his losing FJ was not so obvious to him as it seemed to have been to untold million...

Re: Friday, November 26, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It's time for my rant... I DO NOT understand why people insist on thinking Watership Down is a children's book. It is one of my top ten favorite novels, and I don't at all see it as a children's novel. To me it is an extended meditation on the nature of leadership. Rather than a children's novel, I...

I'd first heard the phrase attributed to Abbie Hoffman, but since he was himself over 30 at the time of his reportedly saying it, it seemed problematic.

Re: Thursday, November 25, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Wikipedia has a link to the San Francisco Chronicle article and the actual quote is "We have a saying in the movement that you can't trust anybody over 30." Famous cans and can'ts. It's true that "Don't..." is the familiar phrase, but "you can't" sounds much more like ...

I've always thought it unfortunate that Rosalind Franklin never won the Copley medal because if she had, one could write a really neat question about two Franklins who had both won the Copley medal.

Re: Monday, November 22, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I found it odd that the correct responses for the detective category went: James Patterson, Detective Bosch, Devil in a Blue Dress, Sue Grafton, Philip Marlowe. The 'tougher' responses seem a million times more famous than the 'easier' ones. I've never even heard of James Patterson or Detective Bos...

I had heard of this canal within recent memory. Maybe Paul Paquet mentioned it somewhere?

The category though should have been "national capitals". A world capital is something like Nüwa or New York.

I'm almost sure I've heard of Peppa Pig, but as I read I confused ungulate with ruminant, reinforced I think by "cheeky" which created an image of a cow chewing its cud. I went with Clara Cow, which may have been close enough to Clarabelle Cow, if only: Cow.jpg I was surprised to be zeroed...

A CHEMICAL TRAGEDY. Our Willie passed away today, His face we’ll see no more; What Willie thought was H2O Proved H2SO4. And this bit, from an old Weekend Update (sorry, I couldn't find any video)-- Jack Van Arks (Al Franken): I say, “Boy! My soup sure is hot!” And this chemist says, “Why don’t you ...

I wasn't sure of any of the stadia, but Packers and Bears were my two best guesses. I went with Green Bay because I figured the public ownership thing may have been the key we were supposed to focus on. Never heard of filé, unless it's the same thing as fil-A, when I still wouldn't have known what i...

Reminds me, it's funny that Denmark would sell us its Virgin Islands but can't bear to part with Greenland.

It's only when you don't think your host able to speak ad lib that you should consider tacking clunky jokes like "now there's an amendment LA can really get behind!" to clues. And perhaps not even then.
