Re: J! in the Media

I would have gone with Garfield. It's supposed to be "100 people surveyed", right? The board totals only 66. Is there a threshold of 3 or something like that before a response is included? This happens often in round 3 after one family takes the first two rounds. The producers limit the available p...

Re: Friday, July 26, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

To see the alumni in attendance this video does the trick: https://youtu.be/LsmoStU2N4k At 0:02, it looks like James was in the audience; and if so it's a good thing they didn't show this until now because James' first two episodes aired at the time the last episodes of Season 35 taped. It seems li...

Re: Thursday, July 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Watching this from the audience, I had the tingly sense that Eric would go all in without thinking about basic wagering for a second and I was right. Shari’s wager made sense, but I can’t help but wonder if she’d had even a dollar less whether she would have opted to stay pat.

Re: Monday, July 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This is, by the way, the first game that contestants could have seen James Holzhauer play beforehand. Started his run on 4/4, and this was taped on 4/6.

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Note, when I say deserve, I mean solely by the standard metrics used for ToC inclusion. *By the standard metrics we, the viewing public, have used. Their game, their rules. have they deviated from this "standard" in the past, other than for death of a contestant, running for public office, or invol...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

The seven 4-time winners who didn't make the cut this time are going to be in the next TOC, right? I assume they were notified of this. So I don't understand why Emma would be taking a spot away from a deserving person if that person (and six others) will get the opportunity to play again next year...

Re: Fun with GSN's "Best Ever Trivia Show" [Spoilers]

... I added a line on Saran's page: http://www.j-archive.com/showplayer.php?player_id=4150 ... I met and played pub trivia with her a few years back. She was introduced to me as "Saran". At one point, she, I, and the venerable Rex Kramer played on the same team. I remember Rex showing her her games...

Re: J! in the Media

An article about James in the NY Post by our very own Vermonter. https://tinyurl.com/y395yr8s (contains spoilers for those who aren't caught up through today's show in their viewing) An interesting note by the author: In my last match, I briefly thought about risking all of my $12,800 on a Daily Do...

Re: J! in the Media

ABC Nightline came by to O’Brien’s last night to gawk at Jeopardy! folk doing trivia in the wake of Jackie Fuchs’ LA Magazine article linked above. Pam, Brad, Dileep Rao, and myself got interviewed fairly extensively so tune in tonight at 12:35 AM ET to see how much of my coattail mugging makes the ...

Re: Tuesday, April 16, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Also wanted to point out: funny coincidence that James' total after today ($566,660) is very close to what the theoretical maximum of what one could earn in one game of Jeopardy! is ($566,400), assuming all 3 DD's in the top row. So it only took James 9x the time.

Re: So...what have we learned so far from James Holzhauer?

An interview with James Holzhauer- Not sure if we can make anything of the fact that it's written in the past tense... https://www.vulture.com/2019/04/jeopardy-james-holzhauer-winning-strategy.html#_ga=2.114365633.75105172.1555449984-2141391358.1527612724 Unfortunately we probably can make somethin...

James said M-M-M for the 3-letter maker of Scotch tape. I said 3M. Same thing? Never heard MMM
It was asking for the NYSE symbol, which is MMM, not 3M (NYSE symbols can't have numbers, I don't think).

Re: Friday, February 5, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Poor Noah. Even knowing that $15,800 was the highest CC WildCard cutoff wouldn't have helped, as an $801 wager would have seemed sensible but even still have been fatal.

And, yes, it bears repeating that all tournament contestants are kept in the dark about previous wild card scores.

Re: Friday, February 5, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

The results of one game never prove or disprove wagering strategy, but tonight's was the perfect example of why in a QF game from behind you either wager nothing or everything. Ziad (hopefully) realized that and now he's in. Noah did not, tried to get cutesy, and now he's on the outside looking in....
